It depends on the type of cake they make. If they're making a huge, visually pleasing cake that's supposed to be looked at as more of a giant piece of art, then yes, they will use cheaper, easier-to-mold, and overall less tastful materials to make it. If the cake is smaller and easier to create, likely more traditional, they'll spend more time on the interior as well. Usually with those large visual cakes, no one eats them. Most of the time, there are other, smaller, and tastier cakes on the side (out of view of the camera) that the crowd can eat.
