Budget 2024: Full speech by Minister Lawrence Wong

S$1.9 billion in support for Singaporean households to cope with the rising cost of living and S$4,000 top-up to SkillsFuture Credits for Singaporeans above 40 to encourage the upgrading of skills for mid-career workers. These were some of the announcements made in Budget 2024 by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Lawrence Wong in parliament on Friday (Feb 16).
Many of these measures built on the roadmap from Forward Singapore, a nationwide engagement exercise that sought views from Singaporeans on the country's next stage of development. Mr Wong also announced a new refundable tax credit to attract high-quality investments to Singapore, as well as a new S$5 billion Future Energy Fund. Housing ,hdb must cap below evaluation price.if you still allow hdb price to shout higher,the low income would never effort to buy, so alternally hdb and commercial price are the same. Private property too! ^^ I invoke self responsibility too and I hope that youngsters will learn about financial literacy in school which I did not have such opportunity which resulted in poor decisions at age 25 as well as 31 I lost out in the chance of early investment at age 25 which if I invested early I would have $190 thousand plus in investment earnings by investing only 30 thousand Then I wiped out my savings at 31 due to poor actions caused by emotional distress 😅I regret this every day however it teaches me the important of budgeting I think Singapore MOE should allow schools to provide financial literacy which will teach kids how to educate parents to invest their yearly savings Small sum investments early can roll to a considerable amount over the years

The problem is our current cost of living and wage differences is too much, taxes increased even in the necessities like food and water, esp food, a simple gst 1% increased, the vendor charge $5 for a plain bowl of noddles. instead why not think of cutting cost in areas of like eg. civil servants employment, many positions are redundant eg. some orgs like imda not very useful but hire 1000odd , and flying of air force jets many times daily around seletar punggol affecting 1/4 of local residents, should not hurt residents wellbeing with these loud air planes and not useful in this era, the air defence is too little from neighbouring attacks (is hundreds vs millions) nor modern warfare like invisible financial or cyber attacks. yet they must have wasted a lot of fuels since they fly every hour making loud noises daily from 9+ to 7/8pm sometimes.

Thankfully Singapore is still better managed than many other countries. Homelessness is rampant in many developed countries and old people neglected. Children living in poverty eating one meal a day. No help from anyone. Inflation is bad everywhere. Its a global issue not just in SG. I live in Australia half of the year since 2022. Housing shortage is severe while immigration is not controlled here. Immigration does not adequately fill skills gaps. Houses cannot be built in needed quantities due to severe shortage of labour including engineers plumbers electricians etc. Homeless families living in tents in parks or bushland or caravan parks. some with small babies. Not enough public housing for low income due to lack of government investment in housing for 30 years or more. Youth crime is so high in some areas they implement curfew. We don't dare to walk around at night in many areas. So as a Singaporean i still believe we are better off than many countries including developed countries. Let's be grateful for what we have. And work together to solve issues.

I completely agree. If cannot help under 40 now, it will just become a vicious cycle where they will end up needing help at 40+. While on the other hand keep importing foreigners to take up the jobs that people want to do. Anyway, anyone notice why the government cutoff midcareer as 40+ to help? Check what was signed around 15 to 20 years ago and ask yourself whether there was any skills transfers to local workforce as promised or was there job losses.

@@lolipopi503 I assume you meant how to respond to a tyrant. I don't know about you, but in Islam we have Qisas ( retaliate similar) after multiple advise not affecting. It act as a lesson for the oppressor, hopefully he/she reflect, back to sanity and repent.
