I keep noticing how proper you are handling the comments that people will be writing in advance, at first you were quick to answer the most frequently asked questions, and now you're really integrating every kind of silly question someone could think of into the video so they won't be asked. That's what I call listening to your audience. I couldn't help but smile when you showed your DIY wobble-machine, brilliant. Cheers Mat, enjoy your sunday.
@Techmoan10 жыл бұрын
Manny Calavera The problem with leaving things to the questions is that they get asked over and over again. I stop answering the questions after they've been asked multiple times but then I get concerned that people think I'm being ignorant....but I just have a life to get back to. Glad you liked the wobble machine - I'm not sure what it proved in the end, but it was fun anyway.
@Jerbod210 жыл бұрын
Well the thing is that with bigger KZbin channels (like yours is becoming) eventually the content creator usually stops listening to the comments or even reading them in the first place. That's the moment they lose touch with their subscribers/viewers which in term leads to people being less interested. I've seen it all, been in almost any situation here on KZbin now, except the creation side.

I've never understood fan boys. After shelling out a ton of dosh on things, I am equally liable to criticise it as praise it. I love all my Apple stuff, but I am well aware that some things worked better for me on Android, and that my Mac will never be as good at gaming as a PC But overall they work for me, I just enjoy using them rather than going round trying to sell them to people

Techmoan Agreed. Where two devices offer the exact same content then by all means go nuts, but very often the comparisons are about two devices that are actually quite different. With this review I was glad to see two devices that are relatively similarly pitched. They are genuine competitors, which makes for a very well deserved review.

@Bicketybam6810 жыл бұрын
Tomteluva So true, they want to feel good about their own purchase and not feel like an idiot for buying an inferior product (if it is) so they then defend the product against any (perceived) attackers. Ultimately they are doing a disservice to both themselves and the product as then the companies that create the product don't get any criticism and they don't know what needs to be fixed or improved in future versions (or at the very least get a muddled version of good and bad comments).

Hi Techmoan. Another cracking video. One thing you have left out is the SJ4000 the settings are fully adjustable so exposure settings can be adjusted which I don't think is possible on the gopro. I found by changing these settings, I managed to increase the warmth and improve exposure on my Sj whilst retaining the quality. Keep up the great reviews and comparisons.

Always great comparison videos, people forget and disregard the early version GoPro's, getting caught up in the specs rather than what they actually need out of a action camera, for £99 now, the GoPro looks fine for use as a daily helmet or bike/motorbike cam, next best for your money is the GoPro 3+ Silver at £199, but then it's another £100 so different league.

Thank you for this review, its a very commonly requested video! I bought the SJ4000 after watching your review and can say I very much like it. With the comparison of these two cameras, its clear the actual footage quality is better on the GoPro, but the SJ4000 has better physical and practical features such as the removable battery and case, and the screen on the back. But as you said, you wouldn't go wrong with either because they are both very good budget action cameras.

Hiya Techmoan: been following for a while now and seen a lot of reviews. I believe your channels is the best when it comes to honest and unbiased reviews. I note which you some time fail to mention (not your fault as you don't seem to be in the hobby) is that these cams are ever so popular with quadcopter/R/C enthusiasts. The extra wide mode may not seem useful on the field but in the air, it is really great feature to have if one wants to capture a wide angle scenic view. So next time you do a cam review, try and put yourself in R/C enthusiast shoes esp when reviewing wide angle and similar option that may not be that useful for folks who are going to use the cam grounded. Keep up the great work!
@Techmoan9 жыл бұрын
Zeeshan AbuRayyan my problem was that extra wide mode distorted the video and made it unwatchable. I didn't think it would be any use for anyone, whatever their hobby.
@ChrisChronos9 жыл бұрын
Techmoan On the hero 3 + black I almost exclusively use the superwide mode when it is strapped to a helmet or my chest. I agree that it would be pointless walking around using it as a normal camera, but for POV for seeing what is on the left and right of you (in a race for example), it's definitely a great mode.

Very informative review and based on this I went for the SJ4000 (at least it claims to be one) off ebay for an amazing £18 ($27) delivered, whereas the Go Pro was more like £94 ($143). I think the Go-Pro has the edge, but it's no way 5 times better based on price. Very nice set of accessories with the SJ4000 so I can attach to my bike and helmet and appear solidly made. Very pleased with the results so far.
@wtfMYRONL9 жыл бұрын
you can get 2 SJ4000's for the same price as 1 GoPro and with 2 you can buy the 3D case and shoot in 3D.. Also you can see what you're shooting through your mobile phone or the LCD screen. GoPro you just have to hope you're getting the shot you want

+wtfMYRON So i have two times bad quality? No, thanks. :D
@Royvdl9 жыл бұрын
+o.Der_Moralprediger.o the only thing that is better on the gopro is the fact that is has actual 60fps on 720 and better light processing. The SJ4000 is actually sharper in image.
@o.der_moralprediger.o17329 жыл бұрын
Roy van der Lee Yes, but for me light processing is very important. When you wear an action cam on your head for example it happens often, that you watch in the direction, from where the sun light is coming. When i use my camcorder, i never would film this direction, cause the whole picture is dark then, but with an action cam you can not choose everytime, which direction you record..So it's okay for me, when the picture is less sharper, but has a better light processing and better color reproduction..

I like the idea of the hero, but as I own a hero 2 and a hero 3black+, I know that the cases suck! My hero 2 is on it's 5th case, and my hero 3 is on it's 3rd, the clips on the top hold too much pressure which then weakens the plastic and eventually snaps off. I've had two replacement cases from gopro them selfs and they just send them out like they expect it! I WAS excited for the budget version, not anymore, great video buddy, saving many many people money. Also I film using super wide angle as I film in 3rd person, that alone justifies the price of the hero 3 for me ;) go have a gander if you fancy seeing it ;)
@wanoman9910 жыл бұрын
What do you use it for? Target practice? :D but seriously how do you break them like that? Do you do extreme sports with it?
@Aartwood10 жыл бұрын
Kind off lol I use them for paintballing, but that's not where the problem lays, as they are very rarely hit. It's normally random when after a trip filming I open the case as you normally would and then snap, the plastic bit holding the metal hinge just snaps off :)

@MikkoHaavisto19 жыл бұрын
The sharpness comparison is unfair because the gopro has a wider angle. You had to digitally zoom the gopro picture more, which decreases sharpness. Camera tests would have been fair if you took the gopro image from closer to the subject so that both cameras had the same view.

@PatrickDempseyG9 жыл бұрын
+Mikko Haavisto wider angle doesnt have anything to do with the sharpness from what ever distance. gopro just has a wider view.. its like taking a movie that is widescreen and playing it on a tv that isnt widescreen. the quality should still be the same correct? "its not fair to compair. you should allow gopro to have a handicap" is all i heard.
@MikkoHaavisto19 жыл бұрын
Patrick Dempsey You don't know what you are talking about. Maybe study photography a bit so you can understand my argument better? I'm talking about the sharpness comparison at 12:44 I actually hate brands that use a lot of money on marketing like Beats, Gopro or Apple. But I still want the comparisons to be unbiased.
@PatrickDempseyG9 жыл бұрын
Mikko Haavisto Look. First off by saying I have no idea what i'm talking about you have already decided you know more about me than you actually do. Second. If you want a fair comparison you have to have a proper neutral. That is simple scientific method. By being at the exact same spot zooming into the exact same object to have the object visible in the exact same perspective IS in fact neutral. With this said I would say the comparison IS completely fair. please study science a bit so you can understand my argument better?
@KulturalnyWilk10 жыл бұрын
13:00 You can achieve the same sharpness with effects on postproduction. SJ4000 seems to be doing artificial sharpening while recording. The outcome looks the same as manually modified in video editor by applying sharpening effect.

Pretty much you get what you pay for. My options were either a refurb hero 3 silver, new hero+, or SJ4000. Since I'm just using this to play around with I don't really care for having the perfect camera. If it works it's going to be the one for me. It's about $80 for a new SJAM SJ4000 (original spec) plus Micro SD card and a suction mount/selfie stick(these are not included). The suction mount/stick is optional but the micro sd card is a must since there isn't internal storage.

Lord Twaddle Sorry and respectfully I don't agree. I have a couple of Canon SLR bodies and you can fit an Arca Swiss mounting plate on them (to put them on a tripod) - that does not mean that they are rip offs of the Arca Swiss camera does it - just that someone was clever and realised that it was one thing less that they had to design.

Thank you for your review. Really great. You give a clear pro and con. Regarding the GoPro wide angle, I think you are biased. The only motion cam you do is on a motorcycle. And the SJ4000 looks better than the GoPro as the GoPro shows too much sky and street. Many of us record ridiculous thing that normal upstanding folks such as yourself wouldn't be interested in; skateboarding, bungee jumping, stupid stunts off the neighbor's trampoline, etc. The super-wide of the GoPro is preferred for these applications. Other than that, I think you are spot on. Keep up the great reviews and, again, thanks!

Looks like the GoPro does not apply any artificial sharpening to the image, but the SJ4000 clearly does. Also, the GoPro FOV is wider, so the sharpness comparison at about 13:00 into the video isn't comparing apples with apples. I see nothing to indicate that the GoPro optics are inferior in any way. If you want to artificially sharpen the GoPro video, that can be done in most video editing software. The wider dynamic range and much better exposure control on the GoPro make it clear that it is a MUCH better camera! It's also clear that the GoPro produces less "Jello" effect than the SJ4000. That's something very important to people who put them on RC multi-rotors - where there is always some level of vibration.

Nice comparison mate. Is it just me or does SuperView look horrible though? I can't think of what situation I'd want to record footage like that...

The suggestions I've seen have been say snorkelling, where you want a wide field of view, but you also want the content in the middle to quite prominent and in the correct aspect ratio proportions. The bit around the side is not as important. Architecture shots such as the ones presented here are not really the intended use of the 'feature' in my opinion. I don't know if I'd be game to try it, but yeah I can see a potential use.

I have a SJ4000 and I think its an amazing little camera for the money. Looking at the differences here I would definitely go for the SJ4000 every time, I prefer the sharpness over the gopro.

Quality is one thing, Story telling is everything. GoPro Hero is all you need, I have a few videos that I shot with my Hero.

I have Tracer SJ 4000 and I doesn't allow to change video bitrate so video files are huge despite resolution selected which makes them useless to archive and store.

I got a good deal at Costco (a membership store for a GoPro Hero3 Silver for only $199! It came with two batteries and a dual battery charger as well as two thingys for flat and curved surface and the housing. I also had just bought the SJcam M10. After looking at the video of both I found the GoPro video not as sharp or as vivid as the SJcam M10 that cost me half as much! I returned the GoPro (I did so much want to have a GoPro) and got a SJcam SJ4000 and had money left over. Their was a DIY fix for the GoPro online but I was not brave enough to do it and in any case it would only fix the sharpness and not the saturation.I can still see a GoPro in my future but will wait until they get their focus fixed.

This wifi and screen would be helpful and it is sharper, but it get's lost in the terrain/sky situation which will be 95% of my shots, so I think I will get GoPro Hero from their site.

Hmm, I'm not sure which I like better. I prefer the image sharpness of the SJ4000, but I don't like the way it handles different light exposures. Whereas I love how easily the GoPro deals with different levels of light - and how bright it is in outdoor settings like when you were walking past the shops - but I don't like how soft the images are. Nor do I like the idea of having to dump the entire camera if those "legs" snap.

The SJ is most likely to be sharper because the field of view aka the zoom of the GoPro is wider and thus leads to less resolution if you crop out the same spot of the two cameras.

bang on review, having used both I know the gopro image is slightly better, just to add, I spent £38.99 on the sjcam, thats pocket money for a sports cam, they also released firmware updates for both versions, vo1, and vo2, although be aware that camera performance actually degrades with the vo1 update, all fine if you have the original vo2 version of the cam, the 2014 update fixes a lot of issues, although the blue tone and darkness still affects the picture, its a bit better, but still not as good as the gopro, although I will say this, spending £95 on a cut down gopro does not make sense, in comparison to whats out there, even sjcam sell wifi versions of both the sj4000 and sj5000 for less than the basic gopro, and if your an average joe just looking for a decent 1080p camera with ALL the things, get an sjcam for half the money and learn the craft of action cams, you get all the mounts you will ever need, and a few features that kick ass, like the colour lcd screens, removable battery, micro HDMI and USB streaming, a decen wifi app, and it lets you play around, and see what you actually need in an action cam, without spending 100's finding out you may have bought the wrong model, once your more informed, then you can make an investment in the right action cam for you, as even a decent gopro will set you back over £300 for the latest version, and some of the more specialist brands with anti vibration lenses and 4k chips can cost well over £700

Excellent round up and comparison Mr Techmoan, go pro takes it with overall image/exposure quality but that sj4000 is quite a bargain and I have 2 because of it. What the heli were they thinking when they made the gopro case permanent, silly sausages

I'm pretty sure the SJ4000 has a bunch of in camera sharpening to make ti appear sharp. I bet if you added sharpness to the GoPro footage in post it would look nearly as good.

By the way, when doing time lapse, if you have GoPro studio you can make groups of time lapse photos into mov files.

Thanks for this review. I was going to buy the SJ4000 but after seeing how badly it copes with changes in lighting I'll definately go for the GoPro instead, also the more stable image is vital!
