Amazing: we mentioned Dufour yesterday and … here y are today! Again I find your comments very pragmatic and to the point. I think Felci is a good naval architect and I like particularly the GL line. The potential is there but they are nevertheless production boats. Redundacy not provided by the producer need to be added by the owner, if saling range is extended above costal one. Thank you for the educated discussion.

You are welcome, its all a price point in my opinion, sure if I had 400k to snag something else absolutely however I find the 100k range far more manageable and then add to it over time as ones needs increase

I know it would not fit into this video but I love the Dufour 45 Classic. Have heard nothing but rave reviews of it's sailing ability. Though I have heard that storage is not what most would like for a boat that size. Everything is a compromise. :) I like the idea of going more in depth for specific models over just listing a bunch. Keep up the good work Chris!

Thabks Bobby, i think i will try both, some more like this and then some more in depth ones on models such as the 473
@bgauthi13 жыл бұрын
@@ChasingLatitudes Wouldn't mind an in depth on the 423 also. Maybe an in depth on the Oceanis "3" line. 393, 423, 473... Would also love caparisons to other Beneteau lines. Kind of like a ranking based on performance, storage, etc.. No one has tried to take a shot at doing those. Might be too subjective to even bother.

I love the Dufour and look forward each day to what chasing Latitudes will put out next. Chris, maybe adding things like cabin roof height would prove totally valuable to taller sailors. In my search for boats being 6’ 3” cabin roof height meant everything when it comes to being on a boat more then one day at a time. I am grateful in my boat my head upon standing straight up allows me to enjoy 80% of my boat while standing straight up. A person would be surprised how crippling it would be to only stand straight under a hatch. Keep them coming and thank you.
@svsandpebble3 жыл бұрын
@ABC gang That’s great headroom. I was so surprised when I first started looking at boats that often headroom in earlier boats was less then let’s say 6’5”
@ChasingLatitudes3 жыл бұрын
One thing to consider when looking for headroom is the angle of the companion way, on some models with the increased headroom the companion way is so steep its dangerous
@svsandpebble3 жыл бұрын
@@ChasingLatitudes So true about often more headroom means Steeper stairs at the companionway. Having or wanting to bring along a larger dog sailing a steep companionway could also prove dangerous for our four legged friends. As you have pointed out, a lot goes into picking the right boat (for you).

Good video! I've been looking and the Dufour 430 for a couple years now, their still out of my price range but hoping they will start coming down as used models come on the market. What drew me to the Dufour is the quality of construction over some of the other new boats and great, creative layouts that maximize space.

"Call me a potato." Now, I'm not one to kink shame anyone, but, that's an odd one. Anyway... you know why older boats had those long overhangs? And didn't carry their beam all the way aft? Mostly, it revolved around the various racing rules, mostly IOR, and its successors. The *style* lingered, even after the rule stopped being an issue. As you noted, the object, under the rating rule, was to have the ship appear to have a short LWL, and then, with the narrow back end, the boats were quite tender, and in heeling over, they'd gain LWL, thus "beating" their rating.
@ChasingLatitudes3 жыл бұрын

Well.... I'm not sure tender is the word. They would designed to be sailed at a certain heel degree, but once they got there they would lock in and be stable as a rock

I like the videos. They have helped. I’m going to sign up to your member area. I’m a about a year, or a year and a half out from buying a boat. I know you say not to go all out in the beginning, but I want to. I’ve had plans to move to the Caribbean for 15 years, it only hit me recently that getting there by boat solves a ton of problems and makes it a million times cooler. I have medium size dogs that can’t go on a plane. I’m looking for something in the $100k-$150k range, 40ft. A safe aft cockpit. Two helms, two cabins. 5 ft of draft or less. If I could find a boat with wood on the top it would give the dogs more space to walk outside. I cold call and for living and work on my computer. I’m wondering how good of internet I could get in different areas in the Caribbean anchored by shore, or docked in a harbor. Looking at Hawaii too. The dogs wouldn’t like that trip as much. I live in Portland. I’ll sign up for you deal this weekend. Thank you!!

Does Dufour offer a more costal hopping option than these two do? I love the 13ft width but man the LOA to LWL is a no go. Asking price under 100k would be a plus. I have another question and I don't know if you want to answer it but here goes. I'm not a sailor. I've never sailed a boat or been on one under way. I do however have aviation knowledge. WW1 the airplanes had thin wing designs and no real structure flat or outward curve to the wing. I'm trying to say it is thin and the design of curved bottom causes a losses with drag being the main force of inefficiency. Is there not a way to make sails so that the inside, bottom of the wing to say, had a taught flat sheet to reduce the drag and increase the lift/up wind efficiency? I could see this being done with the rolling fuller setup and tacking to the opposite side would just mean an adjustment to let out more sail and tightening up the inward flat sheet.

@steveburgess83553 жыл бұрын
Just wondering why your so hung up about the discrepancy between LOA compared to the length at waterline. First thing on a person list should be thing is how it sails. Even if they are on a budget. A smaller waterline is less drag right? Faster hull speed means keeping ahead of rough weather. Tall sails with short water line means it's more powered . What about ballast to displacement and how tender a boat is. AVS and STIX etc. A boat with equal LOA and waterline doesn't mean it's a good sailer. No point buying a boat if you later not happy with how it sails.

Interesting bluewater debate here in the comment section. I own a Tartan bluewater boat but I love Benneteaus for what they are built for. I believe that I would have been better served with a newer spacious Benneteau for the type of sailing I do. The production builder "Benneteau" builds boats for less because of their, 1/ manufacturing processes. 2/ Huge purchasing power of all components. 3/ Multi-million dollar C n C computers that save labour costs. 4/ 130 years of manufacturing experience. Benneteau simply passes all of these savings onto the consumer and that is occasionally misconstrued as a cheaply built boat. Ignore the bashers because they are a minority. At the end of the day, the real winners are the sailers who are having the most fun with their pride and joy boats.
