I'm nearing completion of my build from your plans. Proto typing a SKU1204 x 900mm ball screw for the X axis. Wanted to get some weight off of the Z axis. Calibration is way different than the belt drive with 20T pulley. Big Con: Can't move the X axis without power ( I miss that option) Finished 1/8" x 2" x 30" slats today. Waiting on flexible connector for the ball screw to motor connection to finish build. I'm using ESP32 and FluidNC and most likely Universal Code Sender as it will allow bluetooth for PlayStation4 controller Only 1 part (3D printed) that was out of spec, the torch clamp hole centers was long. (I designed another one) I used PETG for all 3D prints. Still waiting for an update on the THC pcb. Building Z axis now. Thanks a bunch for the very detailed plans and documentation!

I love the design and how rigid it looks. Just a thought for a future upgrade. I have been wanting to build a large CNC table like this, but want it to be able to double as a 2D plasma cutter, but also a 3D router CNC machine for wood and aluminum. Your table is heavy duty enough to pull it off with a couple of modifications. One, I would spend the extra $$ for the lead screws due to the torque if you were cutting aluminum. Two, I would put another rail on the opposite side just for support to keep the arm from bending if cutting aluminum. Last, you would need the router attachment. Now you have a multi-use CNC table!
@r2db
@r2db 8 ай бұрын
It makes a lot more sense to combine laser and plasma. A CNC router needs exceptional rigidity due to the cutting loads, and any reasonable spindle weighs a whole lot more than a plasma torch and laser module combined. Lasers and plasma cutters do not need that degree of rigidity, nor are there any cutting forces to deal with. If you are building the machine rigid enough to be a CNC router it is going to be a lot more expensive and way overkill for plasma or laser use. There is absolutely no way this could function reasonably as a CNC router with the fully cantilevered design. Adding another support and rail significantly limits the use of the machine if you are dealing with full sheets of metal on a regular basis, unless you also build it with a 4x8 work envelope, which again adds very significant cost. Then we also get into dual steppers for one axis, and keeping them perfectly in step can be problematic unless you have picked big enough servo motors or closed-loop steppers, which again adds very significant cost. TL;DR: Adding laser and/ or plasma to a CNC router - overkill in terms of rigidity and a much smaller work envelope per dollar spent. Adding CNC router to a laser and/ or plasma - not viable for any laser or plasma that was not massively overengineered in the first place.

Thanks for eeverything once again. I allready have a plasma cutter integrated to my AC/DC TIG welder, however the TIG is a HF start. So I guess the plasma ignition uses high frequency too, no ? In this case, I have one question, because I read the interference an electo-magnetic noises may harm the electronic. Does anyone here has experienced HF cutter issues with JD's Garage setting and hardware ? Any Arduino being somehow burnt, or frequent issues or reset during the cutting process ? Is the cable shielding enough ? I may take a risk if it looks like it might work. I mean, I prefer risking to destroy one arduino board, than buying a new plasma cutter, if it appears that the HF plasma start may work anyway. Whatever experience you have is welcome

Why not get all in one board like MKS DLC32 for example, $22 from ali and its small, everything wired via reliable locking connectors, 3 axes, 2A drivers that will drive small plasma cutter like that just fine, wifi, sd card, optional colour screens for offline use/control and more. With chinese copying all the open source projects and spewing-out dirt cheap all in one boards it's not worth it for long time now to mess around with plain arduino boards.
