I just finished my e36 turbo build, had a similar issue, do research into something called a “maf clamp” you put a voltage restricting diode between maf hfm wire and ecu and send it to ground which will prevent the car going into limp mode. The problem is the maf isn’t meant to see boost, what’s happening is the massive air going through the maf is cooling rapidly the wire and causing the maf to read erratically causing the ecu to think the maf is bad thus putting engine into limp mode, you can also have the maf rescaled on the tune.

The Siemens MS43 engine management system is pretty sweet and easy to tune for forced induction. Have done a couple of them. A collegue's E46 330 with M52TUB28 (yes, swapped from M54) just last week produced 460whp on E85, GT35 turbo and 875cc inectors. Just find someone that properly understands how to tune it and you'll be fine. Ideally you should run E85, but premium gas will be fine too with conservative timing. On M54, which doesn't have a return line from the rail, you need to put in a proper linear fuel pressure regulator with return line back to the tank to compensate for the increased intake pressure. Also, the MAF from the M54B30 with a 1.2Kohm resistor on the signal with compensation for this in the software is a real nice mod to do.

The f30 is a comfortable daily but you don't feel like throwing it around making the rear end dance like the 330.....E46 side project coming soon.. 😁These guys are hilarious... 👍

Just a heads up guys I deleted the ac on mine a few days ago and the Fans were constantly running at high speed ever sense. I needed to remove the ac pressure sensor from the receiver/dryer and plug it back it. Fans stopped immediately.
