In this video I am reviewing the Golding Eroica HX High Output moving coil cartridge by looking at its main USP it being an affordable and easy way to upgrade to the benefits of moving coil cartridges for vinyl playback.

If that YBA phono stage is a current mode (current dumping) phono stage as I suspect it is (since it offers no impedance matching setting) be aware that low internal impedance cartridges are recommended (do not confuse internal or output impedance of a cartridge with its load impedance requirement). If the cartridge does not have low internal impedance (less than 5ohm) then it is not a good match for a current mode phono stage.

Hi Terry, you are definitely taking the road less travelled, so well done. One thing that I noticed is that the cartridge seems to be angled down at the front. Could be an optical illusion, of course, but is the tracking angle set correctly? I agree your conclusion that cartridges and phono stages need matching. I went Vertere to ensure I can use it with my current cartridge and my next due to its adjustability. Finally, my AT OC9XSL is a brilliant low output MC cartridge. Really want to hear the Hana ML next.

Good phonostage first, it's crucial. Then search for a cartridge that you like, nowadays even the cheapest Audio Technicas are incredible good!! You have to have a really good phonostage to enjoy them.

Should be using a low output MC into the MC input. You probably are overloading the input. Less headroom might explain more prominence of clicks and pops. I would not advise buying the Eroica HX but the LX version. Low output MC generally sound better anyway due to lighter coils (less windings).

It may not be obvious but high output MCs are designed for MM inputs. It's going to be loud for little turn on the volume in any case, which might seem impressive at first.

At least for the PH-1 it's ok. At 7:53 you can see on the backside of the PH-1 that there's a switch MC/High-MC, and it's switched to High-MC. The product description also says: "The PH1 caters for MM, low output MC and high output MC cartridges"

I am planning to test some mats and maybe the gravity one on the TT to. I know they can make a difference for noise floor so they are very much of interest to me

Around 4 min 50 secs the woofer on your speaker seems to be working in overdrive. Do you have a subsonic filter on your phono stage?

Man, you tested a HX. Did you connect it to the MM input and listen? HX Systems are supposed to support MM-only stages salso. What do you think?

Hi, you are right. I had flicked through the video seeking for sound samples, and missed the actual message, what you have been explaining ;-). This should not happen, sorry for that. The point that you brought, that a high output MC system may not sound as good on an MM input, is very valuable for buying decisions I think. I´d like to add that this can also be the case between MM system and MM input. My amp has a switch to select one of three MM input options with slightly different adaptations. The effect is exatly as you are describing it on the MM input. I am close to purchasing an Eroica LX, and the MM option of a HX I am now better able to opt out. Thumbs up :-) The expectation of the LX is of course more clarity and precision due to lower mass. Hope this will compensate for the weaker signal. Do you think on an electrically very good fitting MC input the HX is still worth conisderation?

Do not plug a HOMC cartridge into a ”normal” MC phono input designed for LOMC, it will overload the input! A HOMC cartridge is designed for MM phono stages. The PH1 used in the review happens to have a HOMC setting which is not very common.

If that is the case for anyone out there, no problem, but my experience says that HOMC mode selection is unusual. Google it and you will struggle to find any. What phono preamps are those that you mention, except the PH1? Great review as usual otherwise!

The other 2 are the iFi Audio Zen Phono, and the AVID Pellar There are a number of high outpout mc cartridges when I did my research I found quite a few. Sound Smith make a number of them for example and they are not advertised as being for MM, not at least that I could tell, I could be wrong

HOMC cartridges there are plenty, but phono preamps with a HOMC mode on the MC input is not common to my knowledge. If there is such a mode, no problem. My point is, do not plug a HOMC cartridge into a LOMC input ment for LOMC cartridges.

Yeah sorry I think that is where I am suffering some confusion here, the gain settings are for the output not the input - I see what you mean and now it makes sense why people shun the high output MC cartridge as you still might need to use the MM phono stage and that didnt sound that great to me. Now I understand thanks
