Budget Jon boat speed and prop test 35HP 14' John boat its FAST
My budget jon boat project series wraps up with this video of the initial test runs. The boat is a cheap 1436 riveted flat bottom which is powered by a 1979 johnson 35hp outboard. I went into this project with a goal of reaching 30mph and being able to run in 6' of water. I am happy with the outcome and had a ton of fun with the project. This may be the last video of the project series but it will not be the last you see of this boat. I will be using it for those fishing trips that require ultra skinny running as well as for river days with the family. Thanks for watching!

I’ve a got a 1987 25 hp evinrude on a 2018 1436 Alumacraft light jon. It easily hits 32 or 33 but i have gotten it up to 35 a handful of times. No tilt trim no jackplate just trimmed all the way up with a passenger sitting on the back bench with me and 6 gallons of fuel up front! Great video

This boat was much much faster later on with a modded merc 25. The omc 35 was hurt and let go with a piston failure not long after this video.

Friend, l think the other person was right, drop the motor tilt all the way down and lower the jack plate all the way to then you have more motor in the water and the prop will react differently to 😊😊😊

Drop the motor tilt down one more hole to push the fron down and control the porpoising. Think of power trim down.

My next day of testing should show different results as ive added tabs and fixed a plug wire that was robbing power and about 400rpms. i will play with using that last trim hole if needed.

When you added the trim tabs after this did it help with the boat popping up and down love your boat man been looking for inspiration on how to build mine and you definitely hit the nail on the head👍one more question have to thought about putting float pods on the back like the mud boats just curious pros or cons
@CampCatch
@CampCatch Жыл бұрын
Shortly after adding tabs i swapped to a built merc 25 so its very hard to say. The merc was a little faster and much stronger down low (due to being freshly built vs the worn out OMC). The tabs stopped the bouncing all together. Pods would have been my next move but i moved on to a bigger project and sold the Jon boat. I had a son and decided my free time would be spent with him rather then making youtube videos. I may vome back to it eventually once hes in school.

It's still going as compared to the 4 strokes with inferior alloy. I had a mercury/tohatsu that was corroded inside the water jacket. I did buy a used Johnson/Suzuki 9.9 fresh water motor and I'm going to use it in both salt and fresh water. Definitely flush each use. I'll check it annually for degradation in the water passages.

i have a 1542 jon boat with a 25hp 2 stroke yamaha. i get 28mph no sweat with me and my wife in there. also mine is decked so its a lot heavier than yours. the best i've ever done was 31mph going down river with the wind at my back. you need a wider boat, it'll sit higher in the water and be faster
@CampCatch
@CampCatch 2 жыл бұрын
The old OMC 35s were flywheel rated so the 35 is really more like 28hp in more modern stamdards. This boat has a merc 25 on it with some mods now, its considerably faster now. Also keep in mind that in this video i have 2 people and 60lbs of lead all the way up on the bow to keep the bow down, it has tabs now and levels out on its own.

idk that metal looked like it wanted to fold up running across that water.. that might be a reason jon boats are motor rated.
@CampCatch
@CampCatch Жыл бұрын
It flexed a lot even with a smaller engine. It never sprung a leak even later on with a stronger engine on it and significantly more speed (about 40mph) it was fine. Adding trim tabs made it much more managable.

I’m doing the same thing with my 14 36 although I’m wanting and hoping to run a 670 predator long tail. How much does that motor weigh and does the transom flex ? How did you re enforce yours ? This is my first boat so learning as I go
@CampCatch
@CampCatch 7 ай бұрын
no noticeable transom flex however the omc 35 is extremely light at about 125lbs. Your bigger issue is going to be floatation. I do not think a 1436 without pods will handle a 670 long tail. You will likely end up taking water over the transom with even the smallest waves.

No you don't want to drop the motor 1pin you need to lift the motor off the stern 1" the object is not to put bow down you just need to keep it from porpoiseing and chine walking keep that bow up lift the motor up 1" or as high as you can without it cavitation trust me I worked for mercury racing team and try a couple different s s props

Interesting I ran a old school 35hp on my rib inflatable with a aluminum 10x15 prop, made 36mph, I ran a stainless and got 35 mph, I’m thinking perhaps a stainless is too heavy for the motor to spin and thus the less speed, I don’t know for sure, I read that stainless steel props only really make a difference on motors 60hp and up I don’t know , can’t confirm this.
