In this video we DIY bypass (glitch out) the VATS security system for free on a 4.8 5.3 6.0 gm truck computer using a simple trick, unplugging the BCM while its already running. if it wont run that's ok, we can install your computer into another running vehicle, relearn the key, run it, and then unplug the BCM and confirm it will restart without the BCM.

Awesome . My engine in an 05 , but I’m using a throttle cable setup so I have a 2002 style harness, throttle body, and CPU .

Dude you get a million likes from me. I have an old spare 1500 I swapped a 6.0 into with the computer and body control module from the donor truck I rolled over and have been wanting to put the whole set up into an 89 S-10 shell I have sitting around but don't want to pay big money so I can do this trick with my original 5.3 computer then take everything out of the 1500. For real thanks. It's just too much beater ass parts and the body of the s-10 for me to spend any money doing it. I also subscribed to. All these know it how channels and you are the one that figured it out mad props.

im glad it helps. yeah every dollar saved counts lol. im not the one who figured it out, im just sharing because when i wanted to figure it out, everyone told me you need a tuner which is $$$, luckily we got it figured without any tuners or any money spent. maybe later i will get a performance tube but im happy to have it running for now. thanks :)

Worked for me. I have a 96 Impala SS with a 6.0/4l80e and it would only run for 3 seconds. I changed the fuel rail and more. It ended up being the vats lol this helped a lot!

thanks Red Banks Classics. they told me it couldnt be done. many told me i'd never get it running without a proper tuner to disable the security. i got it running by myself, didnt have to pay a tuner, no hp tuners. sometimes when people say i can't do something, it just makes me want to do it even more. lol. looking forward to more firebird and LS stuff when this snow melts. she's covered up for canadian winter hibernation right now but im anxious for the snow to melt to i can dig her out. it's plated and insured but it's a WIP work in progress

thanks. i couldn't find much info when i wanted to get mine running, and some told me it couldn't be done without a CPU tuner / programmer, so i'm just sharing to possibly help others get their swap running. works great for the older LS swapped cars like this 83 firebird

@@derontalewis2662 this is a classic swap setup with no gauges, thi old car didnt even have a tach or temp gauge. but yeah this could work in many cars. you could do better if you have gauges or use the tablet and RealDash app like i did

@@derontalewis2662 should be fine just might have to keep some of your original harness. you can add a modified junkyard truck engine harness like i did. thats pretty easy. you can make your own gauges or use a tablet like i did

@@613Builds Yeah. I'm in the same boat. I need a Posi. My 87 GTA was hit, and I replaced shell with 88 TBI bird. I never swapped the rear, due to time constraints. So, I have a 383TPI T-56 going into a drum rear, that I just did the brakes, and parking cables on. lol. I'm leaning LS swap though. I wasn't paying attention for like 10+ years, so I'm a newb on LS. Like, I thought the LS had different bellhousing than Gen II? I have a T-56 and bell from a 93 Camaro LT1.

Ryan MacEwen my previous car was an 87 hardtop , I put a 95 LT1 into that car. This is my first LS swap so it’s kinda new to me also. Same bell housing aside from one bolt. Although all the LS engines have a shorter crank (aside from certain 99-00 engines) so I used a hub spacer for the torq converter. The TPI fuel pumps make the same pressure as the LS but the TBI pump doesnt make enough pressure. Although it’s not uncommon for guys to put a carb on a gen3 engine. However I found the factory stock stuff is cheaper and works so I went the ultra budget route, and I wanted to prove some guys wrong who told me it would cost several thousand dollars to LS swap. I did mine for about $500 on the budget with new headers and new o2 sensors 🤷🏽‍♂️🙂

@@613Builds I saw that there was a missing hole in another LS video. I was under s strong impression that (gearing aside) the bellhousing spacing was different on T-56 bellhousings between 93-96, and LS 97-02 F-bodies. I swapped pumps as well. I went with a Hypertech inline pump on mine. Hasn't let me down yet, despite nay sayers. Fuel starvation was always an issue on my car in corners. I'm thinking of working in some sort of can baffle around pickup in tank. Awesome you were able to do it on a budget. I was one of very first dudes to do 6 spd swap in 3rd gen in 1999 (old news now). Got tranny for $1100 and a clutch disc for $30. lol. I'm looking into an LS swap and was wondering if I can keep my T-56 from the LT1 car. Flywheel mounting may be a bit different.

Ryan MacEwen wow that’s cool the t56 is a popular unit now. Yes I know it’s been done before, using the LT56 with and LS engine, I’m not sure what all is involved but it has indeed been done ✅. I think I saw it on sloppy mechanics public FB page or some place online. You probably know more about those than I would. My first firebird was a 5 speed. I’ve had 2 five speed cars but just t5. I’m currently running the classic 700R4 automatic , same as my last 87 LT1 build. The t56 isn’t exactly a budget oriented transmission so I haven’t had my hands on one of those yet but I think they are cool. Being a junkyard budget swap guy I’d probably go toward the NV3500 or 4500 transmissions if I wanted a strong manual gearbox because they are cheap and available in comparison to T56 units

Did this to a 411 5.3l ecm using a 99 4.8l Silverado to remove the vats. Put the 411 ecm in a ls swapped 92 Camaro and it ran. Works good 👍👍👍👍👍

yes its very basic, but cool in its own way. it has a ton of maintenance records and the original sales receipt from 1983 kept by the previous owner, a little neglected lately and rough around the edges but i think its worth saving, as it came from the junkyard

For real. damn. i will try this for sure. i mean working in a Recycling yard so plenty of these availibale that Runs and drive. my boss got me to start a LQ4(6L) 04 Van(Also drive by cable) swap in his new C30 86 dually(350 Gas worn out) but at the low cost i will try this on mine for sure if it can save me 300+CAD of the flash i have nothing to loose. sadly mine is not about to be ready since im redoing my front suspension and other upgrades. but i might try to start with asap just to know.

awesome. i have access to and family at several bone yards too, i also grew up working at several yards having family into "the business" i wrecked them for 15 years now i look the other way, now i look at which ones can be saved and fixed and restored. but its nice to have access to cheap parts and 6L engines are a great find as they are very desireable due to the LQ9 being rated at almost 400 hp bone stock. i dont even know where to get a tuner locally and most people told me i couldn't beat the security without a tuner. but here we are and i got er running using junkyard stuff and no tuners, no help, no big wallet. just cheap junkyard stuff and hard work. i really enjoy building things myself or doing things myself whenever i can, it saves beer money and teaches you skills when you do it yourself lol.

thanks , i used the old van as a tool because my engine is from a different donor also. thats why i had to install my CPU and get it running first. you can install your CPU into any old van or truck like i did but needs 30 min key relearn to run.

thanks! i studied your videos also, and decided either way i wasnt planning on paying a CPU tuner lol after all its a tight budget build. i heard truck manifolds wouldn't fit my application, so those are 99$ ebay s-10 ls swap stainless short tubes, almost mid length. they fit my budget so i'll make the fit the car lol. thanks for watching :)

Put some aluminum header gaskets as a spacer, to space the header out just a bit to clear the plug wires a bit better. And use plug boot insulators..

im from the old school also, this was my first EFI LS swap and i like it. this engine has only around 180ooo KMS , thats just over 100 miles. these engine will go 300oooKMs without much problem if not abused

MrJohn613 from what I keep hearing the ls motors are dam near bulletproof I plan on putting one in a 98 extended cab s10 gonna be a real mover about 15 years ago I put a 302 in a 91 ranger and that dam thing would smoke stock mustangs and Camaros at that time it wasn’t a common thing to see a small truck with a v8 in it and o swear it was such a good feeling to blow the doors off some spoiled brats car

@@Johnny-jr2lq yes agreed! thats what its all about. im hoping when its all done, to smoke some brand new high-dollar mustang with my old junkyard hand-built shitbox LOL. they might brag about thier new car or how much it cost (likely going in debt to finance it) but i like to brag about how cheap i can it for, or how i made it myself. if i could smoke a spoiled brat with my humble rusty hand-built shit box, for a fraction of the cost, mission accomplished. i have more videos of the 1983 firebird this LS swap is being done to. its old and a little rough around the edges, it might just become a drift car not sure yet. a Strace car build would be nice to be able to street legal and possibly compete at the track as well

Got an 03 Envoy XL for $800 a few years back from a trailer park. 220K on it and was not treated well. only straight panel on it was the roof, rest was "abused" with what appears to be a baseball bat. Trans had a stroke I believe, (takes >10 seconds to shift to 2nd). But the hidden gem is the (LS-style LQ4?) 5.3L All Aluminum V8. With your knowledge and a little push from Driveway Engineer, I might just get my money out of that stupid envoy. Will swap it into my 95 C1500 W/T after I pop the 4.3L Vortec with twin T-3 turbos and a FiTech Go-Efi w/power adder kit (~600HP) and MegaShift trans controller. Would just need to figure out how to re-flash the 5.3L Computer for boost.

LQ4 is. an iron block 6.0L. the trailblazer had an aluminum 5.3 or aluminum 6.0 (LS2) in the TBSS. bigger injectors might compensate for the air / fuel ratio but yeah 99-06 LS engines are great, and boosted applications should really be tuned anyway.

thanks, you should be able to use his truck to bypass-glitch your CPU . mine is still running. only major update i've found is don't delete all your error codes. the 2nd time i deleted all codes and i deleted my own bypass so i did it again and learned not to delete all the codes.

So let me get it right, if im getting a junkyard engine, can i run the engine with the original ecu, key and bcm (in the original car), disconect de bcm while the engine is runing, and i shoud be ready to take that engine and ecu for a swap? just that? thank you!

Yes, technically if you’re fast. but if you have the CPU disconnected for too long you might lose your memory and your bypass. Personally I got my swap ready to run, then I bypassed my CPU by using any old truck that runs and my CPU. Then I know my swap is ready and my CPU is ready and I can take the CPU directly immediately to the classic swap vehicle and plug it and i know it’s immediately ready. That way the CPU isn’t sitting around with power for days and losing its memory. This bypass glitch trick relies on a certain error code “lost communication with bcm, no security signal” . So if you fleet your error codes it won’t run. And if you lose your error codes it won’t run. Have the new swap vehicle ready to run if you can before you do this. That way you don’t have a dead CPU after more than one day.

Ya I used it for a year on my first LS swap and drove it that way. Now I have a new tune flash free method but both work well for free methods or if you just want to get your swap running before the tuner

It’s still a good idea to tune it out completely after the project is finished. If you clear any codes whatsoever with a scanner, it reverts back to normal and your car won’t start.

yes you are right. this is just a temporary fix to get your swap running, then you can drive it to the tuner or the dyno for a proper ECM flash. truthfully im still driving mine like this lol because i can afford HPTuners right now. im looking into LSDroid possibly

I'm not doing a swap, but I have a truck that security stops it from cranking every now and then. I'm wanting to know if I get it running can I use this method to delete VATS on it? If so, would I just disconnect the BCM once the truck is running?

Yes you can re-assemble the van or truck no harm done ✅ also most of the connectors need co co-ordinate but my green computer came from an 03 express van which is also throttle cable not drive by wire so in my case they are compatible, but most of the green connectors are for fly by wire and they aren’t really compatible with a throttle cable harness and sensors I don’t believe

That's good to kno. Can I use my donor vehicle that i will remove engine from plus all parts needed for my swap and do the same process? Would the pcm be disabled still when I pull and drop It in my project truck?

Yes you can use the donor , or another running vehicle with the same throttle type . Old Trucks can often be easy to find for cheap. I tried to do it as quickly as possible because it is possible for the PCM to lose memory after some time with no power possibly. this is the 3rd generation which spanned from 1982-1992 a perfect decade of this body style. bumpers and tail-lamps were changed in 1985 and 1991. this car is a 1983 model. but the GTA hood i mounted wasn't available until 1985, which means that this bumper was never available with this hood from factory, but i think the ram air intake grilles match the bumper grilles nicely.

@@mickelallen9554 yes i used a throttle cable type (99-02) throttle body, wire harness, and CPU. most 03 trucks are electronic throttle wire driven, but the van is 03 throttle cable also. the engine i installed in the firebird is a 2005 suburban 5.3 LM7 iron block 327. the car had a 4spd auto 2004r and im using the same style 4spd auto 700r4 only with the v8 bellhousing pattern. i've recently installed the 700r4 in a different video

VATS & base tune If you live in the Atlanta area I disable the VATS security for LS swapped vehicles and provide a base tune that will disable other non used features on the PCM.

So what happens with the truck you use to delete the security if you put the original computer back will it work normal again like nothing ever happened? I need to remove the secure for my swap and I have my work truck I can do it with but I’m scared that when I put it back together it won’t work anymore

My truck had a 4.8 and I put a 5.3 in it. It's still running off the 4.8 pcm. I tried to put the 5.3 pcm in it and the security light came on so I had to swap it back to the 4.8 pcm, but it doesnt run that great. My truck wont even get over 180° since its lean. Will this fix my issue? Thanks!

you can install the 5.3 CPU then do the the key relearn. it will take 30 mins then youre golden. the 4.8 CPU should work but the 5.3 CPU will work after doing a key relearn like i did. it matches the CPU to the BCM :)

I had to use the 8.1L wires on a turboed setup that the stock wires would hit the header worse than yours.

I have a running 5.3 I'm planning to put into a 99 tahoe Obs, I'm not switching pcm for another one. Would I still need to do the same thing with the original pcm to delete the vats. 10 min 5sec off x3 then unplug the bcm, and the vats would be deleted and the motor and pcm can just get thrown in the tahoe, and wen ready it'll fire up without security

If it’s already running you just need to unplug the bcm while it’s running . Then turn it off and make sure it still runs with no bcm. Once you have it running with no bcm it’s ready

You can typically start the vehicles normally with the key and no harm done to the running vehicle. It’s easy to put things back they way they were. If you have a donor vehicle do this process before the swap is pulled. Get two birds stoned at once. Also good video. I've spent many nights thinking about how to bypass the security and you figured it out for me. Thanks!

yes. if your donor is running you dont need to do the key re-learn. sorry if i missed any questions, i try to answer as many as i can. my cpu is from a 2002 and my engine is from a 2005 and im using a 2003 van as a tool to remove my security.

hi :D good question! yes i believe this works for all 99-06 gen 3 LS small blocks. the guy who did it before me did it on a LS1 swapped drift car. the BCM might be in a different location but same principals and same method, same outcome yes.

yeah im following you also thanks. yeah same process but you dont need to swap CPUs like i did, and you don't need to wait 30 mins. just make sure it will run and start again without the BCM and then it will run in a classic swap or stand-alone, without security interuption

If your LS swap is throttle cable then you will likely need a throttle cable vehicle. Likewise if your LS swap is electronic throttle then you’ll want to use one of the same. I did it once with a non compatible throttle but it ran like crap 💩. I have a new method using LSDroid and tunerPro to turn VATS off in the factory tune with an OBDLINK adapter

if the security light is on, the security is on. you need to turn the security light off like i did. let the donor run for a minute and unplug the BCM while its running. if the security light comes on, try again but unplug the plugs in a different order perhaps.

correct, no body control module is the objective. its running a LS swap in a 1980s firebird with a stock 5.3 truck engine and junkyard chevy truck parts. just the engine harness, fuse-block and CPU, with an inline fuel pump.

@@maximegroulx3194 400 is a nice engine and they are getting hard to find, but the fuel injection sure is nice. throttle response is unlike any carburetor. and you dont have to tune the carb or timing with this factory EFI setup. i've always wanted to do an LS swap into a truck but this was my first fuel injected LS swap, and i really like the setup, even using junkyard harness is fairly easy to do and cheap. all of my previous firebirds were carbureted aside from the red 95 (3800v6) and the red 89 (305TBI)

Great video! So once when you do this procedure. Is it permanent or it can be cleared somehow? For example if it's gonna throw a code for lost communication with bcm and if you clear that code is it gonna reset computer and this procedure needs to be redone?

good question. i have mentione that i expect the code but i never it. check engine light came on once for no VSS signal because im not using a 4L60, deleted the code and it went away, never got the BCM problem code yet. im guessing the CPU could reset if you delete it but i cant say for sure.

Ive tried this twice on 2 different vehicles and each time if they sat with a dead battery it was a problem and security issue would be back. Ended up sending the pcms off to have it deleted in the tune never had the issue again. It did work for awhile just wasnt permanent.

this worls with the 99-06 style CPU . ive never tried it with the 07-13 models but the engine is basically the same. i dont know if the 07-13 even have a BCM so im going to assume this would not work on the 2014+ models and might not work on the 2007-13 models. i have labeled this as 99-06 compatibility. 2015 is too new and valuable and expensive, too new no to fix, too valuable not wreck, and too expensive for an old budget build LS swap. this is a budget build under 1k and im afraid i canèt tell ya much about the newer ones because i dont know. im pretty sure if you use the newer block with the older harness and older intake and sensors you could do it, as long as the crank sensors are the same reluctance. a friend recently bought a new chevy truck and it still has the old 5.3 in it so im guessing they are still using the same old block but i couldnt say for sure

So I am doing a LS swap, if I take my donor PCM and find a vehicle that type of PCM was in I can do this to get going? And if the vehicle I use to bypass the PCM, There are no issues putting its PCM back in? Sorry if that's not clear. But basically I am asking if my donor PCM is from a 2001 LS truck and I have a buddy with a 2001 LS truck, I could use his truck to dummy my PCM into not needing the key?? Fellow Canadian asking ;-)

Yes it will work. Install your computer into his truck , then do the key relearn if it doesn’t run, once it’s running, unplug the BCM and let it run for 45 seconds or 1 min. If it starts again without the BCM, it worked. Also I have a new method now turn off the Security see it here kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4qqgKKkqdRga9U

What transmission is in your Firebird? Looks like it would not have an electronic transmission. Is their something that needs to be done to make the ECU work without a 4L60e?

im using a 700r4 because the body harness and speedometer are already equiped for that. old school easy, non electronic. i just need to run a vaccumm line to the original old school modulator valve thinngy, and an old school kickdown cable, detent cable for passing gear and transmission line pressure control. should be pretty easy. im just going to emulate the kickdown throw of a carburetor and add one to my throttle body. if you want to use an electronic model like 4L60e , dont remove that part from the engine and computer harness, keep that stuff

@@332ARA possibly, but i dont have any way to DIY do that myself. there is a few error codes when it senses no electronic vss or transmission, but i don't care about anything relating to the old electronic transmission, as im not using one. i dont have a CEL MIL on the 83 but i did wire in an OBD2 port strictly for scanning possible engine issues, and for the future digital tablet and bluetooth gauges.

I used the 99-02 gm truck harness , throttle cable style , and I also used the matching fuse block , throttle body and CPU from the same 99-02 style Chevrolet or gm trucks. I wanted to keep the old school throttle cable not the electronic throttle.

Alright I think I was able to answer my own question. I let the engine run then remove the bcm and continued to let the truck run for 15 minutes with the security light still on. I turned it off but the security light stayed on. I tried turning the truck on and it ran with out the bcm plugged in. The security light stays on after I have removed the key.

just unplug it while its running like i do in this video. you might have to do the middle plugs first (left to right) then the outter ones. thats how i did it , if i remember correctly. the order might not even matter. make sure the truck will start again WITHOUT the BCM and then its good to go

no harm done. you can use a running truck to bypass your CPU and put it back together when done, no harm done. worst case secnario you might have to do the key-relearn but not to my knowledge. the factory cpu should match the factory BCM.

If you already have an engine what do you require a donor for? If you want to unlock your ECM/PCM/CPU you’ll need a good running truck , rather than a donor. Yours Should be 03-06 with the electronic throttle and 24x crank sensor , if your cam sensor is at the rear like mine. note: Some of the GEN4 engines started in 06-07 but they have the cam sensor on the front timing cover so they are easy to sort out , and they have a different crank sensor with different reluctance and totally different computer . The 99-02 will have a throttle cable, but the 03-06 will have an electronic throttle body. 07+ will have the cam sensor at the front , 99-06 will have the cam sensor at the back.

this engine im using only has 175,000 kms. that's only 108ooo miles. where did you get the number 400 from? the van has 400 kms but my my engine is from a 2005 suburban. the van is only a device to use to glitch my CPU security so i can run my 2005 suburban engine in my 83 firebird.

Yep , I drove it that way for the entire first season, but I learned don’t delete any error codes or you’ll end up deleting your bypass glitch. You can read codes and fix problems it will run and drive if you want to drive it to the tuner and get a custom tune. I have a new method now with LsDroid and TunerPro you can properly turn the VATS security off and change injector flow rates and much more . I have more recent videos on the DIY free tuning . Personally I tune it wirelessly now with my OBDLink and my 10” Android head unit .

With 1” setback LS mounts (stock bellhousing location) Should be factory overdrive shaft length for 3rd and 4th gens. I think I’m using the 95 firebird 4l60 shaft but all the 3rd and 4th Gen overdrive shafts are interchangeable aside from old early 3speeds which had a longer shaft. I’m pretty sure 700r4, T5, 4L60e, t56 all use the same length shafts from 3rd and 4th Gen camaro and firebird from around 1983-2002 . I’m using around 1” setback on my LS mounts which is pretty much stock bellhousing location for older small blocks .

@@613Builds Thank you for taking the time to respond to my question. I'm sure you get many messages. I have an 82 which is my first LS swap. Right now I have a full harness debating if I should get a stand alone or not. I just need a computer yet. I'm not sure what you mean by 1 in setbacks. I'll have to look into that. I know the mounts I used are adjustable. So do I have the engine as far front or back as it will go? Thank you for your time. I really appreciate it. And I'm actually looking into doing tuning. It's amazing how many people are into this LS swapping. I could probably make a good living selling tuned computers with the vats deleted.

Can this be done to a pcm out of the vehicle? Powered up on bench?

Ryan Portal I’m not sure 🤔 maybe if you had the interior harness and BCm hooked up , seems like a lot of work. The idea is to install your cpu into a running truck and then get it running, then unplug the BCM while it’s running

this is for factory tune , factory ECM CPU only i think. it not transferable to other computers. the security is only on factory untuned CPU's only, as far as i know

Bro I’m about to try this tomorrow , so I plug in the donor and do the steps then use it for ls swap and then put my stock one back and it should fire right up? Or do I have to re learn the key

possibly yes , it can work for key-relearn (security) and CPU swap (security) , but its mostly for the CPU for engine swaps into classic vehicles.
