I bought a Beneteau Oceanis 411. I’d heard some of the paranoia around keels falling off. I inspected each keel bolt. 12 x M20 and 1 x M14 bolts. I suspect these were the original bolts, making them 23 years old. 11 out of 13 were fine, however 2 were not. It was clear that this issue was due to a poor attempt at sealing the bolts. There were 2 that had fractures in the bolts and it was also evident that these bolts were not sealed properly and some moisture had made its way down the thread. I replaced all of them and feel comfortable and confident. If you have a bolt on keel and have never checked the bolts I suggest you do. In fact Beneteau themselves told me that the bolts should be inspected annually by removing them (one at a time of course)

I have a Beneteau and my Keel randomly fell off. "Keel" was a purebred Chihuahua and when I was sailing through the straits of Gibraltar "Keel" randomly fell off the end of the Beneteau. I promptly turned around but when I got to the spot where "Keel" should have been there was a big fat Orca named Chuck waiting for me. Chuck smacked his lips and said..."do you have any more of those Mexican dogs...tastes like chicken?" (True Story)

I love these videos. Thank you for tackling the talking points I always hear when I talk to "traditional" sailors about Beneteaus. Ever since I became interested in sailing, they have really been attractive to me. I love the light colored, roomy interiors. The dark teak is dreary to me and makes sailboat interiors look smaller than they are.

I don't know how ANYONE could bash Beneteau boats! They cross oceans all the time. Bobby and Laura from Sailing Doodles crossed the Pacific on one, and Sailing Le Vagabonde did the same; SLV started out on a Beneteau Cyclades. Finally, Beneteau boats became popular because many people bought them; many people bought them because they were doing something right. I'm just sayin'...

My wife and I bought an Oceanis 323 two years ago. We just love it, coming from a line of 70’s boats between 20 and 31 feet. The last one, a Beason 31, Swedish boat from -76. She saw pictures from the interior (huge), especially the head compartment (huge), and that was it. Totally different to sail compared to the 70’s boat, but taking in a reef in time, 16-18 knots of wind, it handles beautifully. More active solo sailing? I have plans on leading the main sheet so I can reach it from the steering wheel. Otherwise a great boat. Thanks for a great video!

My thoughts on LOA vs. Hull Lenght vs LWL: - I don't consider LOA at all ... or let's say: secondary - The critical dimension I'm looking at to judge boat size and interior space is Hull Length. - Furthermore I want LWL to be 90% or greater of Hull Length (green rating). Modern designs ... let's say 2005 and younger) ... are typically at 91-92% or greater. 88 or 89% gives me an indication, that the design might already be a little bit outdated, but I would give it a yellow rating. Everything below is a no-go (red rating). - Related to LOA vs. Hull Length my thoughts are: no overhangs at the rear end. At the bow, I would consider max 2 feet 'overhang' for the anchor roller and an optional 'bow sprit' for a large downwind sail acceptable. In the 35 feet hull length range, this would result in LOA/Hull Length ≤ 105%
@ChasingLatitudes2 жыл бұрын
If you don't consider loa at all then you must not care at all about running costs, most do so it plays a huge factor
@PuravidaMz2 жыл бұрын
@@ChasingLatitudes As I said earlier: my primary focus is on hull length and the secondary tought is on LOA. I would allow for 2 feet front overhang at the bow for the anchor roller and an optional bow sprit ... read LOA

Please look up « Polina Star III ». I’ll be available for my check. However, if you are now changing the bet from « previous incident » or words to that effect to « with no cause » or words to that effect, then there’s _always_ a cause, but just falling off is what happened to Polina, even if it was bad engineering and skimping on construction by the builder.
@ChasingLatitudes2 жыл бұрын
Thats not even a case of one thing leading to the keel issues, there were several that were know and recognized long before she sank, as stated in the video the bet is simple, everyone runs around and cries stating bolt on keels just fall off, they NEVER have and never will, in EVERY SINGLE INCIDENT the keel issues were known before hand, improperly repaired or its a lack of maintenance again , knowing before hand. Its a simple bet, show me one keel that has just fallen off with out a catastrophic event prior or negligence, you can't because there are none, thats okay, I understand how misinformation is spread and my point is generally speaking the bolt on keel is misinformation

There are several reasons for those issues on the racing sailboats. The conditions they are putting those vessels through is mind blowing. @jeffgriglack96242 жыл бұрын
Okay, two things: 1) The keel fell off Simon Le Bon's "Drum" due to a design failure during the Fastnet Race in 1985. 2) There is another choice for keels besides "bolt on" and "full keel." You can also have an encapsulated of integrated keel, which can still be a fin keel but not have keel bolts. That said, I have no problem with bolt on keels, and I'm not rushing out to by a Kracken. How would you like to deliver the $1000? :)
