I am watching this vlog in the Canaries on our 2010 43ft benetau oceanis. We, 2 of us, are living since a few years full time aboard and have plenty of place. Running costs are 5 to 6 k€ per year INCLUDING full insurance (boat is insured for 145k€) we did the Atlantic circuit 5 to 6 years ago. Nothing broke down, not really much extra running costs. Blue water sailing boats are a term invented for a positive description of an old derelict boat. And boat life is exactly as hard as you want to make it, we have an easy relaxed boat life.

Question? I heard shore power was outrageous in some ports. Could to chat about that on another video. Thanks for your efforts.

Just get your solar sorted out. It's cheap ass chips now. Cloudy days put 2L in the generator, start it, and go out for a coffee.
@sailingfabule180510 ай бұрын
The issue is that most systems when connected to shore power will only use the shore power, which is the case on our Boréal 47.2. To use the onboard renewable power source I need to manually switch off the shore power by setting the shore current to zero, and only use the shore power to top off the batteries (800Ah LiFePO4) from time to time at night when the solar don’t produce. Then you benefit from your power generation and minimize the shore drain. For information we do all the cooking with electricity which uses about 1.5-2 kWh per day for full meals 2-3 persons. Good luck and see you on the water.
@francisverhelst93754 ай бұрын
@@sailingfabule1805this is NOT true. Just adapt the parameters of your MPPT solar charger and shore charger so that shore charges the batteries up to 70% and the rest has to come from the solar. More over with a Victron inverter charger you can limit the current you will take from shore to the Amps you choose. On our boat we set it to 2,5 Amps max. The rest will be supplied through the inverter from your batteries. All in all we only very very rarely use any shore power with 400Watt of solar and 350 Ah of Lithium

Buy a boat for the sailing you will definitely do and rent one for things you maybe want to do someday. If you want a boat for cruising the Keys and the Bahamas buy that boat. If you want to sail in Greece someday charter a boat in Greece and sail away. Don't buy a 50 foot ocean crosser that's too big and expensive to do the Keys.

I am a native NYer 😊 I have subbed in. I will be buying a boat soon. Getting a lot of great info from you! For 2 women what type of boat should we start with? I want to go island hopping in the Caribbean for the winters here in NYC. I'm a combat army veteran and want to be relatively self-reliant. I want a catamaran 😅 but think I'm going to start with a monohull.
@ChasingLatitudes5 ай бұрын
@@adriennec6033 just start with a cat if that's what you want, no reason to spend the time or money on a mono, leopard 40 is great for island hopping
@ozwrangler.c3 ай бұрын
If you’ve been camping or caravanning/ RV, then sailing is similar, just add 💧 Every vessel has compromises, pros and cons to be weighed against your needs and preferences 😊 We’ve chartered a few catamarans and used to own a 27’ monohull (day sailing). For longer term, I’d prefer a catamaran - space both inside and out, sun protection, less roll when moored (anchor, mooring, marina), access to protected 🌊 with the shallow draught For racing or sailing experience I’d choose a monohull. You can buy a newer, nicer monohull for the same price as a cat and ongoing costs are lower, too. Living aboard, I think most time is spent moored, so living space becomes an important consideration. Try both, try different designs. Think: How would this work for us? Can I make it work, or, will it be a daily/frequent hassle?
@HikerBikerMoter2 ай бұрын
It seems small boats become uncomfortable when its now two instead of one people living on it. Cutoff roughly seems to be a 35 footer. More space more comfort, easier to learn to sail on/ lesser "parking fees", and a shallow draft to get to picturesque shallows

What is the ideal 2-cabin sailboat size for coastal cruising for 2 people who don’t want to have to visit a marina more than once a week at the most and want to have onboard all amenities ie A/C, heating, hot water, water-maker, extra fridge, solar, autopilot, wind-vane, SUP, diving gear for 2, dive compressor, generator, foldable bike, satellite internet, EPIRB, Iridium Go, spare anker, spinnaker, gennaker, code 0, lazy bag, spinnaker pole, covers for navigation instruments, rudders, winches etc? I would assume anything smaller than Beneteau 45 will be too small.

@flyingpigforge with older vessels they had a large difference between lwl vs loa , this was because when healing you would vastly increase the wetted surface area of the vessel to inturn increase speed, over the decades builders have become better at having those features bit also more lovable space on the vessel

Having that bow straight down makes the LWL appear better in your calculation. It doesn’t provide any additional living space over a bow that cuts back. 🤔

yeah it does. provides storage space (eg chain locker) that doesn't encroach on living space
@stephennowlan26373 ай бұрын
@@jra55417look how flat the bottom is on the boats that have a LWL close to LOA. Where do you think all the tanks and auxiliary equipment go - in the furniture where a deep bellied boat leaves lots of room for food, clothes, and spare parts because the 100 gallons of fuel and 200 gallons of water are in the keel and bilge where it should be. Even try and find that tank capacity on a plumb bow 40 footer
