Very good video, I have been a engine builder for 60 years, good explaining every thing,

Thank you sir, I am quick to tell folks I AM NOT an engine builder. I am just willing to assemble my own engines. I know I don't know everything and still make mistakes and for that reason I just do my own engines. And when I messed up during assembly on my last build, I was quick to reach out to my machinist for advice and to get help with a solution. I 100% respect why some builders are either they do it all or they pass. It's extremely complicated and it is so dang easy to make a mistake and want to blame everybody else besides yourself. much appreciate that feedback sir.

I haven't raced since 2006, but your how to videos have got me wanting to get back in it. I'm a hands on kinda guy and always enjoyed the car building process just as much as driving. I was always on a budget and had to do all my own work including the engine build. Thank you for all your informative videos! A lot of great information in them!

My grandfather who knew Keith black, always use to put STP oil additive in the pumps before assembling it into the block.. he swore by doing it to pump that snake oil thru the bearings first on startup.
@DIRTRACELIFE3 ай бұрын
I don't think it would hurt anything as long as there is an oil base in the additive as well. Some good ole moly rubbed on the bearings has been a go to step for a lot of builders for many many years and will sure give it some protection during that first few seconds of fire up ;)

Hey good job Jason! Your daughter is gonna have a blast for sure. I am putting my old car together right now for my son to race in 2023. ROOKIE! Thank you for taking the time for all the videos!

Thanks Patrick, I am really looking forward to next spring. I know how I like my camaro but now I have to translate that into something that works for a rookie. I think it will be good stuff that we all can be proud of.

I cut off a pair off long head bolts and hacksawed a screwdriver slot on end then screw them in to aid in aligning head install. This trick also helps when putting the transmission in to line up the splines.

I have some 3/8ths done for Transmissions but never made any for heads. But it would help.

That's the Lisle 36500. I'm not sure on the ring expanders. I have had them forever and they just say Made in USA on them. Yep full bore 90%r here ;)

You talked about the motor oil absorb any trash left behind, well then it could go through the bearings, oil pump, lifters, rocker arms witch in turn causes more trash in the oil, so cleanliness is like Godliness when it comes to putting a motor together. And another thing if you use one of those one piece gaskets they are the best but take into consideration it's thickness when setting up your pickup for your pump because it is almost a quarter of an inch thick it's self, and cleaning that type of pan they can cut you like a razor blade.
@DIRTRACELIFE2 жыл бұрын
As always you are spot on Dana. This gasket is 0.125" when compressed and I should have called that out. Agreed on the debris too, the rougher the cut, the more debris will be getting circulated around during break in. That's one reason I ALWAYS change the break in oil before the first hard run. Been lucky and haven't got cut yet there but during making this I literally pinched a chunk of skin off my thumb just putting a rod cap on. It's easy to mess your fingers up in a hurry. I try to wear the thick 9mil gloves but sometimes they get in the way.

i saw that snicker when you said that you were inverting the pistons because of the warn slip coat!.... (wink wink)... freeing up that hp is how you gotta do it when racing!
@DIRTRACELIFE2 жыл бұрын
Well . . . I heard it had some side benefits and as heavy as these pistons are I bet the skirts will take the abuse of it as well. But still... it was just for wear purposes I swear ;)
@jonosborne47112 жыл бұрын
pistons do have a slight offset to the pin to decrease piston slap so they should be installed with the dot , mark, arrow forward. some oldschool guys say putting them in backwards gives a little more torque but more piston slap. I know a racer who won a big race here in Fla. and get DQ for having pistons in backwards at teardown. just sayn.

Can you tell me what the part number is on the head gasket and oil pan gasket you used?
@DIRTRACELIFE2 жыл бұрын
Joseph, that rubber pan gasket is a Felpro OS34510. They make it in a thick and thin version but I use the thick. I am using the Felpro 1094 head gaskets but BE CAREFUL what head gasket you use. You have to have enough quench distance from piston to head or you'll grenade the engine. These gaskets are a no go on surfaces that are not machined or if the piston is not MORE than 0.020" down in the hole at top dead center.

Jason, running a high volume oil pump can cause 3 issues, 1 high oil pressure uses up hp to turn the pump, 2 you have a lot more oil being pumped to the top end that could be interfering with valve train on turns and more drainage returning back to the pan causing windage issues around the crank , 3 i have had 1 issue with all of the oil being pumped out of the pan to the point that in the turns i would flicker my oil pressure light. I have since went to a stock volume pump that still moves a lot of oil at 4500 to 6000 rpm plus i run a 20lb hot oil pressure which is still more than enough, just what i do , what's your thoughts
@DIRTRACELIFE2 жыл бұрын
I think your thoughts are valid but there are two sides to the equation. You have to look at clearances as well. I'm averaging .003 on rods and mains for this engine and I know that alone is going to dump some extra oil off the crank that never makes it top side. On my new CRUSA build the clearances are significantly less and it may would do better by going with std volume. Since I will be using solid lifters in that one, I plan to use oil restrictors and that also insures I get good oil pressure on the btm end. Both working together can add up to not going high volume on the pump. Its a balancing act that varys one build to the next. In this one with its big clearances, hydraulic lifters, and stamped rocker arms that need lots of oil. . . I believe a high volume is right for it.

Is this the motor you ran last season?

Use a thread chaser instead of a tap, not sure if that's what you did or meant Shave the edge of a bolt for a cheap chaser
@DIRTRACELIFE2 жыл бұрын
Ah yes, the Neverending campaign for more tools! I have every tap known to man from 4-32 to 1 1/2" but nope . . you caught me, I don't have all the thread chasers. Anywhere you have a blind bottom they are a necessity and I think your suggestion is spot on for that and is a dang cheap way to do these as well. Just use an old head bolt and hack saw that bad boy :)

Have u heard that spinning the pistons like u did increases horsepower I saw it on a KZbin video idk if it's true or not
@DIRTRACELIFE2 жыл бұрын
The slip coat on the skirts was wore down on one side and that's why I reversed all of them. They all are match balanced and sized out the same and I felt it was a good move for this Ole girl. They have very little offset if any but I should have measure that and not just assume because it was not visible or on my mind. Well shit, guess I'll pull the pan off and make sure its not some crazy offset that will break a skirt :( I ain't perfect by any means and still learn everyday. I have flipped many a piston but I am learning the Hyperuetics can't take some hacks like forged pistons will tolerate with no issues.
