I guess for the price of gaskets, but I've always just had the heads off to do this work. you're only a few bolts away anyways.

This is a sealed crate engine. You can't break the seals to pull the heads or it is illegal for the Crate Racin USA class. 😞

Jason, I've heard it said to run these rear bars "loose". Does that mean to use aftermarket bushings that freely pivot instead of OE bushings that twist the rubber ? Or does it mean have some end play, so the rear end can shift and induce rear steer ? Thank you !
@DIRTRACELIFE
@DIRTRACELIFE 4 күн бұрын
Bob, I use stock rubber on at least one end of the arm and then to "keep them loose" I run a little bit longer bolt and lock 2 nuts together where the hanger is not pinched down tight on the bushing. It helps the rearend move significantly.

When measuring from a center line (string) to the front hub faces, do you have the suspension hanging or at ride height ? If the wheels are removed, to access the hub faces, do we need to use jacks under the control arms to compress the arms ? I ask because I think it affects the distance, correct ? Otherwise, you did a great job on this ! Thank you

Jack stands out right past the ball joints is what I do. technically the car won't be quite down at rideheight but it will be very close.

Oh man, I know that can be scary. Hey, which do you think is better to race a metric or the big cars. Both have to weigh the same. My track has changed rule to USRA. It's easier and will cost about the same to build a new car as it will to change my car over. Plus I'm not able to race this year. I have both the Metric and the big Monte Carlo available and free. Thatnk for your posting and Education. Love it.

Greg, I think the 19 3/8 lower trailing arm on a metric is a bit better on a big smooth dryslick track. The 22" arm on the big gm gives up a little drive but is easier to drive and handle on a Rough or hooked up track.

@@DIRTRACELIFE Thank for your input. I value your knowledge and skills. The USRA rules have a few changes. Example, going from 10 to 8-inch tires, No 9" ford rear end, shocks and springs. But oh well, So My Wife and I have decided to sell this car and build a new one. I love your videos You have the best demeanor and voice. I too work a full-time job. Thanks again and good luck racing

I wouldn’t recommend putting your seat on a the bar that’s connected to the cars chasssis. It’s better to have a round bar that’s bent that holds the bottom of the seat kinda floating like a swing that’s attached higher up on the cage. Just my 2 cents.

What kind of maintenance do you do on this transmission? How often should you change the fluid and what kind of fluid do you recommend?
@DIRTRACELIFE
@DIRTRACELIFE 7 күн бұрын
This Falcon takes type F fluid (about 1.5 quarts) and I change it every three nights of racing. Maintenance wise most recommend a clutch pack every 2 seasons but these measured nearly new condition when I pulled them out. I attribute that to always using a winch to load and never throttling on the car in low gear. I plan to go 4 seasons before I tear it down again unless I see trouble.

On the metric i used to always go square to centerline, but the last few i added a little skew because we had a little better results with a small amount of dynamic caster gain. This all needs to be calculated for dynamic state (after dive & roll)

Where can I order those upper control arm plates from ? I looked for them in the build video and couldn’t find where to buy them. I’m custom building a 65 mustang for autoX and track days with PPM upper control arms. I want the adjustability and to tie then into my cage bars in the engine compartment. Thanks in advance.
@DIRTRACELIFE
@DIRTRACELIFE 9 күн бұрын
Those are custom pieces that Jamie Lewis, Lewis Chassis of Smyrna TN, made for me. He normally only uses them on the chassis he builds but you can sure reach out and ask him. But you may want to look at other options. These are cut specifically for a metric frame and I think there are more options to get plates with the slug slots from a few places. PPM should be able to get something!

@ Thanks for the quick response. I’ll ask Randy and Ricky. I know they have the short mounts but I really like it tied to the cage . I’m using a lot of dirt technology in this build as I drove Latemodels for years. The rotation and drive and anti dive along with the Ackerman and caster gains are in my thought process.

Rather than welding washers on, I'd rather see you use small pieces of plate steel that are somewhat thicker than the frame itself. Im a firm believer in, "when in doubt, make it stout".

F/A-18 jet mechanic- Only use a nyloc once, if you use a fresh nyloc and it comes off.. you should use a jet nut. Also replace them often, If you choose not to replace them often use blue loctite.

So why did you not try and change your setup between the heat and the feature? No spare shocks and springs? Take some out of the L/R, maybe change the shock to one with a looser rebound, and put a little in the L/F to plant the R/R. Maybe put a heavier spring in the R/R? Some of those are not doable easily at the track, and youd need to either have scales with you, or go to the scales at tech, and pray they arent way out of calibration. But some of that should do something at least😂
