Part 2 of 4: Jeremy, Richard and James are challenged to each buy an Italian supercar for less than £10,000. At Castle Combe racetrack near Bristol, they put a Lamborghini Urraco, a Maserati Marek, a 1979 Ferrari and also a Vauxhall Astra Diesel to the test.

Take you a day and some to just get the engine out and that's if you know what you are doing! And it's not like you can go to Halford's to pick up the replacement parts. Although it's likely "10k on engine rebuild" was just a lie, as that engine was far from OK.

Actually none of them were fired from Top Gear. In fact, only James May and Richard Hammond have ever been fired, and that was in the past working for someone else. Jeremy Clarkson has never been fired from anywhere.

1985 BMW 635CSi. However, you can tell it's been beaten every single day of it's life, I don't know how many miles are on it (odo's broken), and it's currently about a mile above sea level. From my rough estimations, it probably makes about 130 to the ground, while still carrying around 3,100 pounds.

Watching this again (it's one of my favorite Top Gear races), I went back and paused it at 6:49 to closely read the parts list for Clarkson's Maserati. Now I'm not an expert on Mazaratis by any means. However, the parts list suggests to me that, far from the previous owner just adding an SS badge (for whatever reason) to the back, the car was actually involved in a minor rear-end collision (one clue - BOTH the SS and Marek badges were replaced, as were other parts that suggest damage). If this is correct, the car was really a SS.

If the former owner of the Merak added the "SS"-badge he also changed the bonnet in the front, because AFAIK only the Merak SS had that black grille betwenn the pop-up headlights. I think Jeremy knew his engine was rubbish, saw the badge in the service documents and quickly took his chance to "reduce" the original horsepower of his engine for the upcoming test.

Most likely there was an accident in the past as the other items on that service history point mostly to the engine. Seems like the engine hoses and such were replaced, but the pistons and main engine components were left untouched. Which probably explains the lack of power on the test platform. Looks like the accident occurred on the side of which the badge was located.

255 hp was from the flywheel for the Ferrari. You can figure a 15% loss on the dyno which means it would make 217hp from the factory. so that Ferrari only lost like 20ish hp in 30 years. That’s pretty incredible.

The Dyno calculated the flywheel horsepower, not wheel. As James said in the video. The machine can calculate the drivetrain drag by letting the car coast after doing a dyno pull. So the HP figure for all the cars was the HP at the flywheel.

Think about it. 1970's tires, 1970's suspension, 1970's intake/exhaust. There have been too many improvements in components over that time period. Even if the car is maintained exceptionally well, its not performing to the modern standard unless modern things are done to it (ie., new street tires that can pull 1G in a turn)

If I had to buy an Italian supercar for under £10,000, I would pick a 2001 Maserati 3200 GT At the time of its release, top speed was 280 km/h (174 mph) Could do 0 - 60 mph in under 5 seconds And 0 - 100 mph in 5.1 seconds. Found a lovely white one for £9,000 as of 2020.

james almost got it right till he said that it converts it into engine HP and thats not how it works to get engine HP you need to dyno straight off the gearbox or flywheel. the HP that it puts to the wheel is IMO the real number to look for since going with engine HP you have to assume that the system is 100% effective and thats simply never gonna happen :D

I think I know why the V6 wasn’t revving to the redline. It’s because the butterfly valves on the carburetor weren’t opening all the way, impeding fuel and air flow because of a faulty spring or a faulty carburetor (one of the 6)

My bright yellow 2001 Ford Escape is a v6 and I’m pretty sure it can give a little more power than Jeremy’s can 😂 although it also leaks coolant and the oil light only goes off when I accelerate. Old cars... gotta love ‘em

RE the Merek: The engine was "rebuilt for 10,000 quid" as per Jeremy in part 1...it should have more HP than factory spec. When I rebuilt my 72 Lotus Europa engine I massaged it up from 105 HP to a dyno tested 116. They never do address this issue.

I had an opportunity to drive my grand dad's 74 Urraco two years ago in essex. He just finished restoring it and it is amazing to drive. Modern Lambos can learn a thing or two about sheer driving pleasure from the vintage Lambos.
