Fun Fact: As a way to circumvent the rules in Nascar a driver by the name of Smokey Yunick chilled the fuel in his cars fuel tank to the point it was nearly frozen and would allow for it to expand through the race reducing pitstops. Eventually rules were made on fuel temperature. After that he made his fuel lines 11 feet long and 2 inches thick to allow him to carry more fuel, he was eventually told he could not do this anymore. He eventually put a basketball in his fuel tank that he would inflate during inspection to make his fuel tank measure to be within rule specification but he would then deflate during the race and fill with more fuel.

Smokey was great! They once, to provoke him after an inspection where they found nothing, took out his fuel tank so he had push his car to the pits and reinstall the fuel tank. Only Smokey got in the car, fired it out, flipped them the bird and drove to the pits. The fuel in the 11 ft lines that was inside the tubes for the tube chassis held enough fuel to not need the fuel tank for a mile or so.

I really enjoy this compilation because I think service stations are cool places in general. There aren't many places in the modern world where people actually have a necessity to gather in one place anymore and fuel stations are one of the few where complete strangers from all walks of life find themselves crossing paths for a common purpose. In a way, they're sort of like remnants of the trading posts that you'd see on remote trails of the old West. It's just a shame that the landscape has become so commercialized, I miss the old truck stop fuel stations from the 80s where you'd have a whole bar and restaurant on the same lot. Dark nights on the highway demanded a little oasis like that for respite.
@patagualianmostly74372 жыл бұрын

Yeah, even now I think theyre underrated. Of course people who cant afford cars generally cant go to them except on long coach journeys or in someone elses car, but otherwise its one of the interesting places left. Like a moon colony or something, central and nowhere at the same time where people meet briefly but theres a feeling of separation from the built up world as well. Unrelated to the social thing, but I remember a silver-walled toilet in a German service station years ago with a white 'automatic toilet' and I thought I was in a frikking spaceship!
@IVR022 жыл бұрын
I think you're onto something. I think it's especially true with highway rest areas - the ones scattered along Interstates with a few fast food restaurants, a convenience store, maybe a place to get a map, and of course a gas station. There's something very comforting about them to me - to know that all of these people who are going to different places, with different thoughts, different dreams, different goals, are passing through this same liminal space. In that sense, I think there's almost a certain beauty to them. Or maybe I'm just talking out of my ass at 11PM on a Sunday night. I'm not sure.

How many miles you drove ÷ how many gallons you used. How is that hard to figure out?
@thef7263 жыл бұрын
@@jacobg5122 the problem is that basically everywhere else in the world you use kilometers and liters instead of gallons and miles, making the conversion more difficult. Also, a lot of people won't even understand the result because you can't put it into perspective if you are used to liters per 100 km for fuel efficiency.
@jacobg51223 жыл бұрын
@@thef726 I guess that makes sense, because I don't think I could do liters/km off the top of my head. I know a liter is a little more than a quart, and a kilometer is roughly 0.6 miles, so 1 mile per gallon is about 3.8l/1.5km. And it's probably just as unintuitive in the other direction as well.
@JellyLocke3 жыл бұрын
@@jacobg5122 a litre is 1000ml. A km is 1000 metres. Its pretty easy to do the math...
@jacobg51223 жыл бұрын
@@JellyLocke Yeah and it's easy for me to do miles per gallon because that's what I've been doing all my life. But I'm saying I can see how it would be difficult for someone who grew up doing it with different units. Besides. I don't have a reference for what a milliliter is because we don't use them in the US. So knowing that a liter is 1000ml (which I did know) doesn't mean anything. I can tell you a gallon is 4 quarts, but unless you know what a quart is, that still doesn't tell you what a gallon is.
