This video is the third in a Playlist called Counting Acoustic Orders. This video shows you how I learned how to count subwoofer enclosure orders. I discuss the differences between multiple subwoofer enclosure models, based upon which 'acoustical' order they were designed after.
This video features:
* 4th Order Bass Reflex Enclosure
* 4th Order Bandpass Enclosure
* 5th Order Enclosure: Front Loaded Folded Horn
These interesting enclosure design styles may or may not have been something you or someone you know have used in the past. This series is meant to get a conversation started and enable us to teach each other in this field of acoustics.
Please enjoy, and feel free to leave a comment in the section below.

Thanks for the really great videos, I didnt even know i wanted to know all this stuff. One question I have is something you actually touched on with the 4th order bandpass. What applications are each of these designs best suited for? I know you mentioned sealed cabs being punchy and good for kick drums, but do any of these have big advantages over others and in what real world application would you use one over another? Thanks for the exceptional content my man!

Horns are mostly directional, for the outdoors or pro audio. 4th orders typically control the upper f3 roll off, 6th order better extend the lower f3 couple with the flat and controlled upper f3 of the 4th. Used more so with smaller drivers to give a more pronounced low end. Like in the classical Bose applications.

Hi, Quite informative videos. Keep them coming. 1. Which is the preferred tool to design higher order subs? Is WinISD good enough? 2. I see a lot of Micro subs being introduced in the marker with driver sizes ranging from 4 to 6 inches! Can you help guide as to which kind of enclosure is the best if one wants to have a preferably kinda flat curve in the 35 to 70Hz zone with a small driver but with very little bass overhang or lumpy bass?
@BudgetBassHead

Most of these tools are the same under the hood. Basic calculations of parameters, applied to acoustic theories. WinISD suits my purpose just fine. As for the micro subwoofer, with space becoming less of an issue, transmission lines and Bandpass enclosures are quite popular. However, there is also a popularity of pairing them with passive radiators

Hey budget bass head, can you get into DIY pro audio bins, like scoops and HOG scoops. Or Paraflex? I would love to hear something about this. I’m thinking about building a dancehall PA system.

When I was in high school(1992-1995) a good friend of mine had a 1989 S-10 with two Orion 12's in a 5th order enclosure built in the bed of the truck and had a 12' x 12" cutout in the bed and cab with a rubber seal that sealed the bed and cab together. It was powered by an Orion 800w amp and it was one of the loudest setups I've ever heard. It would play anything loud......rap, rock...it didn't matter, it played it all very well. It had punchy hard bass with rock and the lowest lows in rap etc. And for it being back then it was just mind blowing loud.

5th order horn looks interesting. I would be worried about tuning it in phase but you could probably prototype it out if you wanted to. I feel a transparent side, confetti and a slow motion camera focused on where the two waves meet might help when fine tuning.

Great video! Super duper graphics! What I wanted to hear was what to expect the sound to be like. Going through all the "orders" of enclosures and WHAT to expect from each design. Show graphs of frequency responses, spl output @ 1 watt input, etc. Enclosure types mean nothing until I can relate to what sound to expect. There is soooo much more. If these are band pass designs, then explain how to figure bandwidth, Q of band width, the fundamental peak frequency of tuning and all that stuff.

You have bass refex trying to become a 1/4 wave after (series) In an EXPANDIND path transmissionline. Which is just a series 6th that has the second chamber and vent smeared into each other. Its not a ‘5th order’ just because you faded the appearance of its 6th order series layout... but no english class. Im not argueing, you win😁 ....this is budget science for us speaker nerds 101👍🏻😁

hey my guy wondering if i can pick your brains real fast, with a tapped horn where the front and rear wave can interact (constructively) and where the magnet is rear mounted at the mouth of the horn, would one start by wiring it in reverse polarity? or maybe some one else can help in chat

where can i find the calculations for the 5th bandpass? I´ve read a paper published in AES "An Introduction to Bandpass Systems" but it is a bit confusing. Where did you get the math to do the design. Thanks. Good video man. Hello from Colombia

That fifth order setup is super interesting. It reminds me of a tapped horn. Honestly, I see things a bit differently here. -- The whole point of running a ported box is because you get a bump in performance at the tune frequency. A horn typically needs to have a mouth bigger than the driver, so you're able to use the size of the port to make a smaller horn.
@sc0or
@sc0or 6 ай бұрын
With a difficulty of calculating a tune frequency because we are not sure where port ends an s horn begins, we have a big advantage in neglecting an air velocity cause a horn reduces it to an acceptable level. It’s only important that at a point a port horn meets a membrane, the velocity is lowered enough And don’t forget we need about 12” to double a cross section area to make a horn to play 30Hz. A horn is NOT for a car. And never was. It’s for a big house of a rich man.

Hello I just subscribed. I'm interested in building a C-pillar isobaric 4th order bandpass enclosure for four 15s in my trailblazer. Is this possible and will it sound great. Only reason I'm thinking about this is because of my space and I'm trying to keep the back seat.

Isobaric for 4 subs equals the surface area of two subs. Iso saves space and increase motor strength. If that's what you need, then go for it.

The fifth order enclosure looks like the bass box of a Klipsch La Scala to me. Kind of a lot going on in those boxes. After hearing the La Scala (s) and looking at the price tag, yes, I would consider trying to build something like that. Not sure I have enough room to place them properly.

My buddies 1995 525i bmws trunk acts as a 5th order. It has a ported 12inch polk at 250 watts. And because the cabin to trunk armrest port is made of leather and has little give it play it acts as tge port for the 5th order. Makes the 250 sound like a 500 or 600 watt
