There are basically two ways to go on the the car: Either restore it to completely stock or just have fun with it- make it driveable and use whatever cheap parts and mods you want. If you go stock and do all the labor yourself, you have a chance of having a car that is worth more than you have in the car minus the labor. If you to go modified the value will not go up alot, BUT the fun factor could be GREAT! Build a VW, Corvair or LS for it (yes, all of these can be built or bought used making more HP than the stock engine)- put a used fiberglass body kit on it, use some comfortable late model junkyard seats.....keep the cost down because it won't be a super collector car, but you could make some great memories in the car. I bought a running 5 speed 928 late year for $2K put $250 into it and sold it for $4500 in two weeks...that is a way to make money on an old Porsche....BUT it SURE would have been fun with a LS engine in it! If you do a super low budget build on the car many of us would REALLY like see you build a hot rod and not an investment portfolio. The body is really decent- paint it the original color and keep the snobs guess. I have a '55 Tbird replica that have MORE fun with than an original trailer queen.....

Hoorah. A budget 911 build, just what I have been looking for. I can’t see it in person so I can’t comment but it looks like it’s fairly solid, surface rust on a lot of it. I would even say those wings (fenders) are salvageable with some panel beating. I’ve seen worse. I’m from the UK where if you even blink cars rust out so for a 45-year-old vehicle it’s got a lot going for it. I’m sure if you use hard work and ingenuity it will produce some reasonable results. I do agree with the guys that is you want a show car you’ll need to spend mega money but If you just want a driveable classic, you’ll get it done. Looking forward to it.

2.7 efi have soft magnesium crankcase and probably lots of broken or loosen headstuds. Remove primitive emission control devices such as exhaust thermal reactors (primitive catalytic converter), and partial exhaust gases inlet system (all of these help on overheating the engine). That electronic fuel injection must have been done, also, so you didn’t loose anything. There are some carburetor kits available. Brake hoses, calipers, bushings are also ko. Expensive rebuild there. Good luck !

Love your enthusiasm my friend but just a friendly word of caution: Keep it original at all times. As soon as you modify it the value disappears and Porsche buyers will walk away. Even keep that original exhaust sound as its crucial. In the Porsche world originality is everything and that will protect your investment. But enjoy the rebuild ..

Engine will have head stud issues which is common on the 1974+ 2.7L. Bring your wallet to rebuild this motor. The rocker covers can be ditched for a cleaner hot rod look. I wouldnt widebody a targa. You can give it SC rear fenders if you must, but no real reason why. Inner heater tubes are most likely rotted inside the body. Body is also twisted, it will need to be put on a celette bench if you want the doors to close properly for paint. Some cars are worth saving. This car is not. It is parts at best. Dont walk, run from this car. It is a money pit. It is tags and title at best. Everything is available for this car, but the parts cost is higher then the resale value. And that is without factoring labor.

@@gentrest6421 I'm having a hard time imagining saving that engine. Whenever I think about building an RSR tribute, I consider $25k for the engine to get a motor that's built right and really fits the car. It'll be interesting to see if saving ~$10k on this donor turns out to be worth it. I suspect that a straight, more complete donor might have been less expensive in the end.

By Yankee standards, this car has no real rust. Welders are cheap. He has $500 for a hot rod basis- build a hot rod and skip the overpriced Porsche parts this is not a platform for a purist. If he is frugal and does his own labor, he can build a fun project for $2000. Don't tell me he can't because I have. It's not the Mona Lisa it's just a junkyard car.

@@johnhansen4550 IF he runs something other than a Porsche engine it may be able to be done "inexpensively", however it will never be done for 2k, no one can do this project with THAT Porsche engine for 10k much less 2k. FWIW and though I would love to see you do the flat six boxer - if you don't want to end up dropping a minimum of 10k - probably 20k on an aircooled boxer engine, you should LS swap it with the smallest ALL aluminum LS you can find.

I can't wait to see what you do with it. Don't sell it. Depending on your skills and if you do all the work yourself you could easily bring this back to life. The engine on the other hand will cost a lot for a compleat rebuild. I would do a compression test and if good just replace the head studs one by one, all the seals you can without taking it apart. Replace the timing chain or at least replace the tensioners with hydraulic tensioners. It looks like the fan was already upgraded but its broken so you will need to get a new 11 blade fan. Also another common problem is the heat exchangers will need to be upgraded if not already. If you go wide body I would try to save the fenders if you go bolt on. Replacement fenders are very expensive. Unless you plan on going with fiberglass. You could do a budget hot rod build if you plan to keep the car for yourself. I don't know what it would take to get the stock fuel injection up and running. It maybe easier and cheaper to upgrade the intake manifold from a newer 911 and go with a standalone ecu. I have a 82 911 that I am back dating to a 73 RSR. It has a 996 water cooled engine that's going in it along with a bunch of other 996 and 986 parts. But I have had to put it on the backburner for now do to health problems. So I am looking forward to this project!

One thing I like a bout nice salvage yards like PickNPull in my area is that don’t let the cars gets destroyed by pickers so they can sell every part. The normal junkyards let people tear up the dash and console just to get a gauge. If you need dash trim or kick panels or radio surrounds, they’re all busted up. I’m late to the series but just subscribe and will enjoy binge watching this restoration.

Slant nose conversion, Wide body conversion ( carrera type), whale tale. That is what I would do. Checked ebay the doors were about $800 each, complete. hood was about $300, Seats can be recovered. New VDO gauges about $600.

aWhen editing your videos try and normalize the audio as the music is way too loud compared to your voice, annoying having to turn the volume up and down all the time. Looking forward to another youtuber who is up for a challenge.

What an OPTIMISTIC guy! I wouldn't have undertaken this project in a million years. Find a reasonably treated car and go from there. Not a junk yard find like this. Wait until you start sourcing parts....$$$$$$

To keep original and still call it a budget build is insane, you should consider making it a rally build it would give you more freedom and be cheaper too.

If you value your time, sanity and bank balance you should quit whilst you're ahead and flip this car. There isn't a single straight panel that I can see, no interior and a drivetrain/suspension which will need to be completely rebuilt. You got a pretty good deal for 500, if it has a clean title it's worth 3 or 4 times that easily to someone who needs parts because this is nothing more than a parts car. By the time you get this running and driving you'll have spent far more than a good driver would have cost not to mention the hours and hours of headache involved in doing the work. Not hating, just talking as someone with a bit of experience finding a dream car and later realising it was far too gone to be worth restoring. Wish you the best of luck either way and just subscribed!

Killer little project... I live in Greenville and my paint shop is in Easley near the Greenville Pickens Speedway, mainly mess with vintage Corvettes, Camaro's and other muscle cars, however I drove a 951 (944 Turbo) in college and would love a 72 -73 911 with the oil door and long nose.

That’s a great starter project, the targa roof section for those are super expensive to get in good condition and a cheaper alternative that can be done to the targa body is a cabriolet conversion, if you’re going widebody you can pick up complete front fenders in fibreglass from the Porsche cup racer guys at least I know you can here in Australia and the wide body looks awesome with the bumpers and rocker covers that you have, good luck with it I’ll be watching every step, I’m a Porsche tragic and can’t wait to see how you go, cheers from down under Tasmania Australia 😎👍👍🇦🇺

Brilliant. Rebuild it, to original spec, once you‘re done you have an amazing car, on top one you always dreamt of. But there’s more: should you ever have a monetary issue a pristine, original 911 in the garage is a very fast sale to fund whatever you have to fund in that moment.
