This video highlights several ways to tame and bond with your rabbit. This is a highly requested video and often the topic of many questions I receive. There is no one way to tame a rabbit and what works for me may not work for you however if you go slowly, work with food as a reward and spend plenty of time around your rabbit, your bunny will eventually grow to enjoy your company!

Thank you :) I worked hard on this one haha as I wanted to cover as much as possible! Also I think a lot of people (especially young) tend to look at the rabbit's behaviour and not necessarily why the rabbit is behaving that way so I tried to cover other aspects of the rabbit's life that will help to make a happy bunny! And Ollie, oh my goodness, he is such a ham! No problem taming him hahaha.

I have had my bunny for about a month, I got her when she was two months old, and she absolutely LOVES being picked up. She would rather sit on my chest and sleep in my hoodie pocket than go in her cage. She also loves our beagle. So is she just a weird rabbit because she likes being held? Or is she just really bonded with me? She basically goes everywhere with me when I do chores around the house.

Amelia McDonald Most young rabbits are fairly snuggly but then as they hit that teenager stage will want to be on the ground more and can develop changes in behaviour. This is a good time to have them spayed/neutered as well.
@themmsfamily7526
@themmsfamily7526 4 жыл бұрын
Amelia McDonald no rabbits like being picked up some just show less scared of you look at fast nose twitching and bold eyes that means they are scared or worried. You think your rabbits is not scared because your rabbit is not trying to jump away but they are still scared x

Strayfox I miss my old bunny so much, I'm crying... I had her for 7 years until a dog I was looking after got upstairs and broke the door and killed her... my baby girl... She loved me so much and cuddled, gave kisses and was literally my only friend... She didn't mind being held... it all happened so fast and now she's gone... my hockey team surprised me with another baby lop bunny only a month after and she was friendly the first few days but then she just started digging at my pants and shirt and nipping, as well as always trying to play and never cuddling or sleeping anywhere near me like the did a few days prior. It makes me regret getting one, I just wish I got more time to meet rabbits at shelters and not be surprised by my team with a pedigree baby bunny. She's cute but nothing else... I just want a friend not a cute viewing toy.. I wish I never got her... I really hope it's just her age and that she will get over her over active behaviour since she's only 6 weeks old... it just makes me hate her when I think about my old rabbit which I try not to but I really think it was far too soon for another rabbit and it breaks my heart. My parents don't know that I cry myself to sleep regretting it... I feel guilty because she's only a little baby bun. I wanna get her a hopefully kinder friend who is a little more like my old bun but my parents would for sure say no as we can't afford it :( I hate it... does anyone know if rabbits tolerate more things when they get a bit older than little babies?

My first bunny wanted nothing to do with me for like the first year after getting him. He just wanted to be left alone but I made sure to lay on the floor with him near his cage for a couple of hours a day (usually more than that) and let him just walk hop around the room with me there. Every once in a while he would come up and sniff me and I would sneak a petting in on him while he wasn't expecting it, lol, but he would immediately run away as soon as I would touch him. Eventually he just got used to me being around him and would start to come check me out here and there but being picked up was always a super task, until he reached around two years old. Now he kisses me all the time when I go say hi to him and will hop on my lap and doesn't mind it at all when I pick him up now (well like 98% of the time). It is just a waiting game with some buns and can take a long time. Other bunnies like my bunny Critter never minded being held or interacting with me since I got him as a 5 week old baby. But I think it could be because of how they were raised also. Snacky (the bun that didn't like to be around or to be picked up) stayed in his pen for most of his first year because he was my sister's bunny and I didn't start caring for him on a regular basis until she got tired of him and stopped paying him any attention. Critter was always with me and slept in the room with me and was not confined to a pen. I would hang out with him any time I was at home and would bring him places with me so he was always used to being with me and traveling (in the car) with me when I would go out for short errands or to go see other family members.I think this amount of time I spent with him while he was growing up for the first year really made him trust me and let him know that not only was I not a threat to him but was his protector, since I would stick up for him whenever I felt he was beginning to feel uncomfortable for any reason and would immediately pick him back up and hold him close and talk to him so he knew he was ok and that nothing would happen to him as long as he was with me. Every bunny is different and they just take lots of time and patience to build a strong bond with. Even the bunny that would never come near me for his first year and change is now more than content to be held by me and even sit shotgun on a blanket in the car as long as I am there with him and I make sure to drive as smooth and carefully as possible so the ride is not scary for them. Good luck with your bunny and PLEASE do not give up on your little one, it just takes time. :)

Foxy Flame my first bun was a difficult bun but I was also inexperienced owner, she was quick to potty train but she never like being pickup, only tolerated my petting but it took a year before the bun really likes me and will lick me non-stop and will jump on my bed and try sneaking kisses on my face...it’s very annoying when you try to sleep and can’t push her away, all I can do is hid under the blanket. Lol. My second bun is extremely easy, he is a huggable version of my first one, he goes limp when I pick him up and will sit on your lap for as long as you want but will poop on your lap if you kept him for too long. Basically I think you got the bun that will likely take a year to get use to your present, also she may never like you to pick him up, just like my first bun, she never like being pickup doesn’t matter what.

Thanks for the tips, I'll try that! Right after I watched your video this morning I gave Elsie some floor time. She still hasn't gone back to her cage, which I put on the floor, at least not when I've been around! She's been out for about 4-5 hours. She's really been enjoying it and she even came up to me and was willing to eat a treat. Your video was great! I really enjoy your channel, I get so excited when I see that you have a new video. You have no idea how much this video has helped me. I adopted my little bunny Yeti from a pet store and he's incredibly timid and I've really been struggling to even get him out of his cage to play and get some exercise. He hasn't come out at all even after hours of leaving the cage open. I'm definitely going to put to practice what I've learnt from this video. Thank You!

Thank you for sharing this story with us all! I really believe that time, patience and persistence is the key to winning your bunnies heart - especially if they've come from a previous bad situation. Honey is 3 1/2 now and as you can see, is still very shy from me however I celebrate my successes with her, continue doing what I'm doing and in the meantime she has a great life and a great husbun that she thoroughly enjoys!

Best video I've seen and loads of great advice THANKS.. I have a 13 week old rabbit that keeps laying in its poo and wee so how am i supposed to clean the rabbit (with wipes) without picking it up and as you say breaking that bond
@BudgetBunny
@BudgetBunny 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris! Haha sometimes bunnies can be messy! ESPECIALLY babies! What type of housing are you using? Have you introduced a litter box? Having a designated area to go helps keep the mess in one spot - although good litter box habits may not start until he's older. Keeping the cage nice and clean and providing adequate space will help as well!
@christhomas8281
@christhomas8281 8 жыл бұрын
The rabbit is 15 week old and I'm following all of the above, I've noticed the litter box only is wet so I think he's going in there but his poo is scattered around the cage, I keep picking the poo up and putting it the box.. Biggest problem now is although 100% tame he just wont come out of his cage, keep trying to persuade him with treats but just seems impossible at the moment

If you are getting a baby bunny they can't be fixed until around 6 months of age. In the meantime of course you're going to want to get to know your rabbit! Start out with the taming and bonding, you just might notice some behaviour changes when it reaches sexual maturity which is when you'd want to get it fixed. You should always be spending lots of time with your bunny whether fixed or not but it makes for a much better living arrangement if you have your rabbit fixed along the way. :)

Ok, my bunny is 3 years old and I really really want to bond with her but I just don't know how to, I've watched loads of videos and attempted everything, she takes food out of my hand and everything she just doesn't come up to me at all and runs away from me, she's an outdoor rabbit for reasons which I won't explain because we will be here for hours, and she's not neutered. If your wondering why she's not tamed already it's because I was 10 and there's no excuse for that but she was nearly bonded until her sister died and then just it just never worked out please help

I'm so glad you've found these useful! I've been planning this video for months and trying to think of every possible bit of advice I could give. Poor Charlie :( He's so lucky that he has you to spend the rest of his life with but yes you're going to have to work very slowly with him. Honestly using longer pieces of veg really helped me, especially with Honey as she's so shy. It helps them to feel safer that your hand isn't right in front of them and slowly you can give smaller and smaller bits.

Great video! Adopted two young rescues a couple of months ago. One problem with rescues is that they may already be traumatized, so sometimes you do have to "bunny burrito" them if they need medical help and aren't in the mood to be picked up. But they really do bounce back quickly with lots of sweet words, gentle pets, and healthy treats! And definitely lots of supervised indoor playing and jumping fun! Doesn't take much work other than removing electrical cords. They'll run, bink and jump on their own, but do supervise them.

amy moore No I would definitely not feed them chips. Chips are quite salty and not a part of a rabbit's natural diet. Their digestive system's are extremely delicate and anything out of the regular is enough to cause gas or stasis which are very serious in our bunnies. I would stick to healthy veggies as treats instead. Thanks for watching!

Took one of my rabbits about 2 days to bond with me, lol. But his brother was extremely timid, it has taken 4 years and he finally loves and trusts us, spends most of his time climbing all over my partner. I found hand feeding was the best way. He has a cage but doesn't use it, just sleeps under his favourite chair and free roams. Luckily he is litter trained. Great video.

With my rabbits, I would shake a treat container to get them to the cage and kneel down behind my buns with a leg on each side. The couldn't go away from the door, but I wasn't forcing them in either. I'd show her the treat and move my hand in the cage to show her what I wanted. Sometimes there was a lot of protest and trying to hop over me (blocked with my hands), but eventually she would decide to get in and get her treat. After a while, especially if they get enough run around time, buns will value the treat enough to go in the cage quickly.

Don't ever pick up your rabbit unless it's fully needed, try laying down on your rabbits level so it's not as scared.

Julia this is because rabbits are natural prey animals, if you wanted a rabbit you should have known that not all are cuddly and like being held. I suggest laying on the floor next to your rabbit so you’re on their level. When you pet them don’t bring your hand directly in front of them because they cannot see it, since their eyes are on the side of their head. Hopefully this’ll work for bonding with your rabbit

Really good of you to make a video like this! How I've done is: always letting my bunny run outside the cage when being home, lying down on the floor and letting her climb me. Being patient in every regard. Simply be loving - that comes across to animals too.

Big Boy Cereal It’s better to use a pen or free roam rather than a cage. Rabbits need lots of space and excercise and cages don’t provide the proper environment for rabbits. I don’t know your situation, but consider switching to a dog pen/ x pen instead. ❤️

@BudgetBunny
@BudgetBunny 9 жыл бұрын
Obviously there will be circumstances like grooming and nail clipping when this is unavoidable. It's unrealistic to think that you will never pick up your rabbit but keep in mind that rabbits prefer their feet on the ground. Constantly forcing your rabbit to do something that makes them feel nervous is not going to help your bond. There are lots of other things you can do with your rabbit then holding them such as sitting on the floor and letting them come to you. My rabbits will often hop in to my lap to cuddle or jump on the couch to join us but it's on their terms with their feet on a flat surface. It's not any different then owning something like a large dog - you wouldn't be carrying that around but you can still interact, love, snuggle etc with it!

Thanks! I think I covered pretty much everything hahaha. I've been working on the notes for this video for months because I was trying to be thorough. There are so many things to factor in to taming. I think we get so many taming questions because unlike cats or dogs who pretty much join a household and are looking for our affection, we need to approach them and teach them that we're gentle and kind and good :)

Hey c&c grids work, as you've noticed I use them for everything hahaha. The back of our yard dips a bit so the gate has a good space to crawl under. When the bunnies are out I tie grids along the back fence to provide a barrier. Our yard is little so when they play out there I just hang out with them and give them the entire yard but when the piggies come out I use the grids to make a llittle pen for them :) Much cheaper than a run!

Thank you for making a video like this, I wish my friend had seen this before she got her bunny :c She kept her poor bunny in a small hutch on the floor in the back room of her basement, and the only time she interacted with it was when she tried picking it up (Which never worked; he always tried to get away) Eventually the poor thing died of an infection from messy fur most likely caused by a dirty cage a few weeks later :'(

Thanks! I don't like to tell people where they should house their bunnies but I definitely think having indoor buns helps to strengthen your bond with them. It was good that you had them in the house for that first year as they had that time to form a close bond with you! :) And it's so funny how they all have their own distinct personalities

these are such nice tips. I will sent this vid to my niece so she could have a good bond with her rabbit. I sometimes feel that people do not care ar all for their bunnies and they die quicker than they should. I used to have two rabbits, both passed away after the age of 10 so they can get pretty old if cared well for.
@BudgetBunny
@BudgetBunny 8 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately rabbits have a stigma of being 'great starter pets' for children that are pushed at pet shops as being easy to care for and requiring minimal space/time/housing/diet etc. Unless people do adequate research and really spend time getting to know their rabbit and giving it lots of space they wouldn't realize just how amazingly intelligent they are, how social and also how delicate their digestive systems are. Rabbits can easily go in to stasis and die within a 24 hour time period - sometimes less! I feel a lot of people are unfortunately unaware of how delicate rabbits can be, could go away for a weekend and sadly come home to a dead rabbit. Improper housing and diet can also contribute to a shorter life span. House rabbits current range is 8-10 years but many are living more around 10-12 - especially as we and vets are understanding their needs more. I have two in the house that are getting close to 8 and I hope to have them for many more years to come! Thanks for watching! :)
