YES YES YES!!! Fabulous video - perfect advice! Several main issues.... NO credit card balances. 50 years ago in my high school econ class, the teacher said to never put a burden on your future paychecks because there may not be a pay check. The only things to ever put on payments is your house and/or vehicle. I believed him and lived my life on that advice. Lucky for me I had a mother who also believed that way and taught me the same lesson. I started out with the envelope system (pre computers) I would cash my weekly check, divide the money into weekly 'deposits' to the appropriate envelope and I'd have what I needed for the bill. The one thing I didn't do as well as I should have was regular savings. It took about 15 years to actually start saving but I got caught up and retired with enough retirement to have what I need to live a comfortable life. It wasn't always easy but the main issue for me to teach my daughter was to never ever put a burden on future pay checks - she believed me and even during very difficult times she has not had to spend precious dollars on credit card interest and misc charges. The only issue I would add.... pay 1/12th of monthly payment to principle of each monthly house or car payment - get them paid off significantly sooner. I had a boss tell me that in 1976 and it worked. Thank you for sharing your wisdom - I sincerely hope that anyone having financial issues takes this advise and starts a detailed and do-able budget because it is life changing.

I believe you and my parents are so much alike. They taught me and my brothers the same that you teach. . I don’t have, never had a credit card. If I have the cash,after bills of course, I can afford it. While being single, I raised three children and two foster children, worked full time, church is big part of my life and I volunteered 3 evening a week, which my children did with me. Always payed all the bills first. I Now own and live in a manufactured home. Kids are grown and married. And besides a small hospital debt I live a debt free life. Can’t imagine enjoying a life filled with debt. I’m so grateful my parents taught me this. I’m so glad you are teaching others also. You two are awesome. You’re a blessing to many.

I would love to relate to you guys a story. Not unlike you guys, no one ever taught us to be good stewards of our resources. You were taught to go to school & get an education in order to make money & raise a family. The Good Lord bless me with a wonderful life mate as well as good work. We bounced around the country following our jobs. Never giving much care about finances or the future. My family came into some money & my father called the family in to help run the business. None of us had much experince in running a business. But we were young & naive. It wasn't long until the business was failing as well as my father's health. The economy was tanking and the area in which we had the business was hit exceptionally hard. So we decided to get rid of the business & move to a place that had better work & a place that my father could get some better help with his cancer. So we moved down south to TX. Where we set up our lives. However, we brought along some debt and even though we were both working, cost of living here wasn't cheap. One day it came to me that we needed to get a handle on our finances. I was horrified to see the money going out with little being paid down. I had a couple of kids & and ailing father to consider. We decided to go on a diet. A diet on spending. The Good Lord showed us how to get out of debt. So we would concentrate on our smaller debts. We paid them off first. Then took that money & paid on the bigger ones. All through this I kept thinking of the scriptures concerning not owing money & how it made you a slave to those that you owed. Within two years we were pretty much debt free. My fathers health was failing. So we decided to get a big enough house to house my parents as well as the four of us. So the Good Lord got us into a house. Even though I had never though I could afford such a home or ever expected to pay so such. Yet it seems that God continued to bless us with work & we were able to pay down the debt we incurred by moving into a house. It wasn't long until my father passed away. Leaving us saddened. Mom was from a generation that stayed at home to take care of the family. So we enlisted her help with our kids so that we could go to work & pay the bills. A decade or so later mom passed as well. Leaving us with a huge home and a hoe in our hearts. My kids were mostly grown & we were confused as to what God planed. So sure enough my daughter became pregnant & delivered a beautiful boy. We happily asked them to move into our house. So our home was now full once again. My son, son-in-law, daughter, grand baby & my loving wife. However the Lord had other plans & after a few years the kids wanted a place of their own. So they moved out. My son was not far behind. Now the nest was empty. But the Good Lord had shown us how to survive & how to make sure that we didn't owe a ton of money. We're almost totally debt free. No car payments & our house is a few short years away from being paid off. BTW the Good Lord show us something important. We use credit cards to our advantage. Here's the insight that He provided. We selected only credit cards that were free. No yearly fees. Also, they have a grace period. So if you pay withing the grace period then you don't pay interest. Also the cards we selected pay us to use their money. So it's a no brainer for us. The Good Lord has always provided. He's never ever let us down. And He continues to bless our lives. But I feel it's my responsibility to pass this info on to others. So now we're much better stewards & God has provided the wisdom to live a fruitful life. Instead one of need & want.

I love your channel. Six months ago my husband lost his job of 22 years due to decline in oil prices. He was able to draw his unemployment for 20 weeks but now has no income coming in. I work part time due to poor health. We are both in out late 50's. My husband has applied for numerous jobs with no results. Five years ago we worked hard and paid off all out debt. If we hadn't done this I don't know where we would be now. We are Christians and are tithers. I am believing for God's blessings on us and that he well lead my husband to the job he wants him to have. Thank you for the videos you do. They are a blessing to us.

This is probably the fourth time I’ve watched this over the years. What I love is how upfront you both are about not correcting the way you spent money until you were in your 50’s. You are so humble to admit that it was your own choices that created the problems you faced - that you lived beyond your means. You show everyone that it is never too late to correct. There is so much hope in that!

Love the part about savings interest being "really insulting" So true! We are debt free and have been for a couple years and are saving up to either buy a bigger piece of land or to have it in the event of another job loss or even for the need of another rig if one of ours breaks down. Great info and advice and even though we have a handle on our finances, I still enjoy listening to things like this and learn what others have done and are doing and see that the information is getting out there to help others. I have some extended family I truly wish we could get to understand this

We went 7 weeks with no income because of paperwork.Because of our past experiences we made it through using savings knowing the checks would be coming.When they came they went back into the savings to cover what we took. we are now retired and everything is paid for. We budget similar to you and it is a great feeling being free. Thank you for your informative videos. Happy Fall!

Very sound advice and applicable to folks of all ages from just starting out all the way through pre-retirement/retirement years. I think it is sad that for so many their priorities are more towards toys & luxuries and less on basic necessities. Concerned that despite many folks receiving pandemic related payments from the Government they are failing to pay their rent/mortgage and instead making unnecessary purchases with those funds. When the assistance stops, there will be significant balances due. Thank you for sharing your experiences and wisdom. Sincerely appreciated!

I am doing your 'program'. I was going to try to do it on my own, but some of the bills to be paid are my ex's. We are friends and in fact, I rent a room in his house (long story) Anyway, I printed out the page that said I could pay off all the bills I was involved in, in about 3 1/2 years. He looked at the page and asked if we could just combine all the bills and he was going to match what I had originally put aside. I got his extra bill and added the extra money in and we will have over 60,000 dollars paid in just 3 years! WOW! I can't wait. He is 68 and is ready to retire and with this amount paid off he can do that comfortably. Thank you for the program. May God Bless you and yours.

I agree with you so much on the budget suggestions. I wish I'd learned my lesson when we were a young married couple, regarding this, and not gotten myself into debt in the first place. I'm always thrilled when I hear others, especially young people who are being frugal with their money and minimizing their lifestyle. It's such a joy to spend money on experiences and on my family, when birthdays and holidays come around. Since I get paid once a month, I have to budget carefully just so my money lasts longer. I have, in the past month, become more frugal with my lunch budget. I don't cook during the week, since hubby gets home very late and won't eat meals in the evening. So our grocery budget is pretty minimal anyway. Since I don't have leftovers, very often, I decided to buy microwavable meals at the Dollar Tree to keep in the fridge at work. Not only has this helped my lunch budget, it has also helped me lose weight. The portion sizes are smaller and I'm eating less calories. I'm like you, Elizabeth, when I do buy something I'm very particular about how I spend the money. If I'm replacing an item that is still in decent shape, I donate the old one to the shelter. They provide clothes and household items to those they are assisting. It's a win-win - they get something useful and I don't have extra clutter in the house. Frugality and minimization is so freeing!!

Thank you so much for this video. I use to be a huge spender, but with our 5th child on the way the debt is my focus and 4 year plan. I hesitate to splurge but still allocate funds to pocket and entertainment money. I rejoice when the next pay period comes and their is money still in those splurge accounts because I am beating my addiction to spend through the grace of God with constant prayer. The piece in your video on tithing was much appreciated. I did not grow up in the church and sometimes get confused about what the bible is saying; therefore that alone was worth watching your video. To you all I give much thanks and appreciation that my vision will one day be a reality.

8 to 12 months we will be debt free. So happy about that. We haven't had very many Bills for several years. What we do is put most of our money in our savings account. Our bills are set up to be paid automatically with a credit card, which is either monthly, quarterly or annually. It is very convenient and makes it so easy. Just keep track of one thing, credit card and pay it off at the end of the month. Also, I can pay the credit card over the phone through the automated service. Hardly ever write checks or go to the post office anymore. I do keep track of when each bill is due and check it off on my spread sheet when it has been paid. My mom taught me how to budget. I'm getting alittle wiser and starting to see how it makes life so much easier and a lot less stressful. Her motto was, "keep it simple sweetie."

GREAT stuff! You are laying it on the line for us all. I'll add this: Let's start a movement where "not being able to afford _____" is not an embarrassment. We're on board with all that you're doing and saying and we've realized that, in our pre-frugal days, we were ashamed to admit that we could not afford everything we wanted or even needed, at times. NOW, we are free from that shameful feeling and we live more freely within our financial means. Can't wait to see Part 2!! God bless!!
@LiveSimpleLiveFree8 жыл бұрын
In stead of being ashamed that we "can't afford," I'm proud that we're completely debt free. Most of my friends cannot say that, and are envious. And soon, because of saving and budgeting, we WILL be able to afford stuff - CASH - that they can't, like a new rental investment property for retirement income, completely debt free.
@rough-hewnhomestead47518 жыл бұрын
That is just wonderful! We're moving in that direction, too. I feel like our society has built up such a pressure, over time, that causes people to try to acquire things any way they can (debt) in order to avoid having to admit, "We can't afford that." It's free'ing to be out from under that pressure. Great video!

I'm able to set up my electric and natural gas payments on a system where the utility companies do this for me---once a year they calculate the average and then each month the following year my monthly payments are the same each month. I love it. Same principle as what you described but I don't have to do the bookwork. I'm putting this out there to say to folks: Check with your utility companies to see if they offer this option.

My brother had a stroke, and i had him set up monthly property tax, he has to spend monthly or he wouldn't see how much was going out. Budgets didn't work for him, but prepaid on his bills does. Utility bills average payments, truck insurance, and auto pay on cable and phone. I also do this for myself, I retired over a year ago. Got to save for home repairs too. Luckily, i could replace my ac\ heat unit, $3,500 in cash. Im hoping i will have the money when its time for a new roof, it looks really good,but if a storm, my deductable is ,$1,000. And im glad you talked about buying coffee and donuts, those $5 and $10 dollars really add up. I only eat out on special occasions, or coupons once in a while. Yes, pay bills first!

The utility company may have a way to find your history on line or they may be able to tell you your history if you call them. Also, one suggestion. If you can round up those amounts that you put away, you will feel so much better. Even if you round up to the nearest dollar, then when you pay the bill, you won't be surprised, and eventually, you'll find there is extra money there.
@livelaughloveeveryday41008 жыл бұрын
our electric company does it for us if we want... average billing. I've been on averaging for years but I calculate the monthly amount myself because they sometimes lower the average too much which makes it bounce back up too high. We have very very high summer electric AC bills so the averaging really helps.

I just recently subscribed and have started with this Debt Freedom/Finance series of videos. Thank you! Maybe you get into it further along and can refer me where, but how do you feel about contributing to IRA/401(k) accounts? Especially and specifically if one has unpaid debt? I had one at my prior long term job. 5-1/2 years ago I first took a huge loan, then left the job to access all available, to try and help a sibling out of their huge life mistake. Thinking too quickly with my heart and not my head, this became *my* huge life mistake. I started a new 401(k) 2 years ago through my new job and make very little money part-time but contribute heavily, currently at 21% pre-tax. I’m 54 and trying to get back what I lost. I also have asthma and other health issues, and run a small-scale farm business, so seeking additional employment would not be physically feasible. My husband almost 54 works full-time and then some and will retire with a pension from a local municipality. We have 15 years left on our mortgage and some auto and credit debt. Selling our hand-built log cabin, 5 acres, and small farm business is not an option. We made out huge when we purchased our land and there is no where we could rent or buy close to our jobs that would be more affordable. We live very similar as to how you both describe you used to early on, and talk about in your video. In addition to my retirement funding, this Spring we started an account specifically for moving expenses to our intended “warmer retirement location” in 7 years or so which is funded by direct deposit so it’s not touched. We are not savers. If I didn’t have auto-deductions and contributions to these, the money would be spent on something else. If you have no video on this so far, maybe it’s a topic/discussion for a future video? Thanks again, and I look forward to catching up on your videos.

Contributing to IRA/401(k) accounts is a good idea IF you have an employer who is matching your contributions, because you are effectively raising your income and savings contribution with your employer's contribution. However, if you are doing it all by yourself without any employer contributions, then there are better ways to invest your money. You are MUCH better off to get COMPLETELY out of debt FIRST. Concentrate first on paying off all credit cards and car payments. Then concentrate on paying off the mortgage. If you put all of your financial energy into paying off your 15 year mortgage, you can probably do it in 5 years or less! Then, without a mortgage, you can invest the ENTIRE amount that you had been spending on the mortgage payments. This way you make interest your friend instead of your enemy. You will be earning interest instead of paying interest. In the long run, If you can invest the entire amount of your mortgage payment for 10 years (because you paid it off ten years early), you will finish with a much larger amount in your investment funds when it's time to retire. For instance - let me pick an arbitrary number. Let's say your mortgage payment was $1,200. If you pay it off early by paying every extra penny (including your IRA contributions), then you would be able to invest $1,200 every single month! I used to teach a seminar on this, and this is a very quick explanation of what it usually takes me 3 hours to teach! LOL

I related to your story because I am a contractor, my wife as well had a stroke, and I have a father that is wheel chair with medical problems that I help out during the weeknights (he lives 30 miles away from me and my wife's home), which leaves me only the weekends for me to spend time with my wife.Trying to balance time on spending with my wife, help take care of my dad and running a business is extremely hard and at times stressful, as well as financial stress. I didn't know if you had any ideas on the health insurance or if you are going to do a video about your experience with health insurance,right now I don't have any employees which makes the health insurance not a tax deductible expense for the business, me and my wife's health insurance is over $12,000 a year not including any out of pocket deductibles that we have to pay for. Thank You

Wow. it sounds like our situations are amazingly similar. The only solution that I know to health insurance cost is to appeal that unconstitutional nightmare called Obamacare. Our health insurance costs dropped because after the stroke, she got disability which REQUIRES her to go onto Medicare. You still have to pay some for Medicare, but it's MUCH cheaper.

Every three month, I have trash, propane as needed when it gets topped off. Water monthly, this has gone up. My husband made an error on our taxes. He didn't check the block stating that income was taxable so we have been told that we owe additional taxes every year since 2012. This year we found the error and corrected it. However, we will still owe additional taxes for 2015. 2016 should be ok. We are currently making payments on 2014. In the past I had made arrangements with the IRS to make payments and we file our taxes they take what money is due us to pay off what we owe them.

I don't know how it is in the US but here in the UK we can have all utilities bills on a monthly direct debit, all you have to do is get those DD to be planned to go out just after your pay day. Personally, our Pay Day is 26th so all DD go out between 27 and 30 so that then you know what you have left. ( and Income tax / National Insurance ( medical) / Pension is taken directly from our salaries anyway)

We can do that too. But we prefer not to. It takes control away from us and gives it to someone else. We prefer to retain control of our finances! But that’s just us. 😀

I'm a quasi-independent contractor. I work for some companies that take out taxes and they label me as a "part-time employee as needed". I work for others that don't take out taxes and so my tax accountant has told me I need to automatically take out 25% out of each of those checks for the IRS. Also, some checks come in bi-weekly installments and some take as long as 45 days. So, it's very difficult to budget for that. Like you said at one point, Feast or Famine in my business. As for my spirituality, I've still got my core beliefs. That Jesus is the Son of God and that He shed His blood for me to wash away my sins and then He died for me. What I don't have, and quite frankly don't want, is a church. I've got my reasons and I don't want to go into them here. But, church is definitely not on the list of things I'll be doing. With that said, I've got a couple of questions about the tithing aspect. First, for the "part-time employee" status where taxes are taken out do you tithe on the total check before taxes are taken out? Or the check that you get after taxes are taken out and then, if you get a refund, tithe out of that as well? My second question is this, since I don't have a home church where would you recommend that I send the tithe? My thought is to pick a different church each time and just send it to them? Though, I think I'd like to send it to a church that has mission trips out rather than a mega church that already has quite a bit of revenue. What are y'alls thoughts on the matter?

Hi thanks for sharing! We are debt free but definitely could be doing better. My question is, when you put the money in the other account do you then have to transfer it back to the checking account when paying a bill?
@LiveSimpleLiveFree8 жыл бұрын
That's one reason we use a checking account for our "budget savings" account. That way you can just write a check or use a debit card without transferring to your general fund account. You will see that explained better in part 2 coming soon.

interesting topic. FOr many budgetting is an automatic usual principle and disciplin. My dad always taught me 'we only spend what we got in our wallet'. The US is famous for its insane creditcardabuse that 99% of Americans use to build up astronomical debts for more and more luxury, feeding the greed and 'want-cultue'. It is just a characteristic that shows what US moral is about. (No offense meant!) When listening to yoru video I wondered how these principles add up to a SHTF situation. If you see how the world is going down and war is thrown upon us, that we are pushed into a global Armageddon, do these principles still count? I can tell ya, when we got all these warnings two weeks ago from all different European governments, that people shoudl stock up and prepare for an 'existence-threatening', nuclear, worst case scenario, I had no doubt in my mind and doubled my supplies immediately and got all the last needed neccesities for the coming SHTF-situation. If I had to use credit for that or make debt I would have done that without a blink of the eye, cuz this is not about normal life circumstances anymore, this is about existential survival. Wonder how you feel about that... cheers and thanks for the new video!

Many banks do not charge a service fee these days if you keep a minimum balance. . Many also have checking for seniors. You just have to look around.

Can't wait for the spread sheet I am lost, I no nothing about one, Yes I totally believe you give God his money first, I have been married for 44 yrs my husband and I were school sweethearts and married right out of school then started our family of three children right away, I was a stay at home Mom so money was tight at times, there were times we cheated God but after years of God continuing to bless us we learned how important tithing was, he has always taken care of us, this past year my husband took a big cut in pay and insurance in the coal mines, but God still supplies our needs not so much of our wants but you come to realize the important things in life are not material and can never replace family and health. We made a big mistake when we were young and opened up a major credit card, my husband bought a tractor and lawnmower but there was six thousand dollars we could not account for where it went to, learned lesson there, the finance charge was so high you could never see any progress in paying it down so we got a four year loan from the bank with low interest but very high payments, we shredded that credit card and vowed never to open another one, that was over twenty five years ago, so yes you can live without one. I love you two precious people and it is refreshing to have good Christian people to share with all of us your journey! God bless you both!

It sounds like you learned your lesson with the credit card early on. Good for you. Most people do not! It took us (well, ME) much longer to learn. Spread sheet video is coming soon. Bill

On budgeting why don't you auto pay your bills monthly. Record payment when you recieve confirmationin on a spread sheet to keep track. we are debt free and own a lovely home. since you mention your stroke often this would take some stress off you. but pay your bills timely. we both have had medical serious problems and have reached a point where doing all unnecessary work is overkill. we have a history of what our necessary costs are and from time to time as we see things are increasing we change the course or drop from our lives. neither are clothes horses. buy lovely clothes but not designer's clothing. we have no car payment and we live happily, do not eat out often, eat well at home and enjoy family and friends. it's a difficult time for young people to raise children and live happily and financially solvent. what advice do you have for them?

Does not using credit at all lower your credit score?
@LiveSimpleLiveFree4 жыл бұрын
Here's the thing. If you NEVER plan to use credit again, why do you need a credit score? The only reason to maintain a credit score is so that you can get into debt. And we don't plan to ever do that again!

It's much more difficult to do when you live on the road. Believe me, I know. I was a truck driver for 8 years. But if you set your mind to it, and change your thinking, it can still be done. BUT ONLY IF YOU CHANGE YOUR THINKING. And to applies to everyone, not just drivers.

I don't have a house payment because I had pulled my retirement and paid off my property. But I was penalized by the IRS for doing that and I got penalized due to the Obamacare Law because I didn't have health insurance for half a year and was penalized because my brother didn’t have health insurance all year in 2015. You may wonder why I was penalized because of my brother. I was penalized because I claimed him as a dependent as he is my dependent. He would be homeless if it wasn't for me. The IRS put a lean on my house due to these penalties and others plus for back income taxes they say I owe. And I have state income taxes to pay. I have tried to come up with a budget but I don't make enough money to pay all my bills and gas in my truck to drive to work and to be able to buy food! I thought about getting a new mortgage loan to consolidate debt and pay off the IRS, but my credit report is not good enough and when they find out I have a manufactured home, no matter that it's on 10 acres with a private well, they tell me that they don't finance manufactured homes. My truck payment is too high and it takes too much gas to drive but I owe too much to sell it. I don't know what to do.

Are you's not afraid of your money being in the bank in the event of an emergency? I am but also afraid of fire or theft if kept in my tiny house.
@LiveSimpleLiveFree7 жыл бұрын
We only keep our monthly working budget in the bank so we can pay bills by check or debit card. We wouldn't keep large amounts in the bank. But anyway, if the dollar collapses, which is what we expect, the dollar will be worthless whether it is in the bank or cash under your mattress.
