We also went thru a very tough time in the late 80's, husband was out of work for several months and we used credit cards to get thru the crisis. It took us a few years but we got out of all debt and have been debt free for 30 years. I just purchased a new car, paid cash for it. It really is the only way to live free.

We started budgeting about 12 years ago, and managed to get totally out of debt when we sold our house in 2014 and paid cash for a smaller one. We even allow ourselves an "allowance" that we can spend any way we want to...kinda like when we were kids and got an allowance. LOL It has made a WORLD of difference!! We've been able to buy a little 5-acre piece of forest last year, and it is so nice. We thought land would be a good investment and a fun place to use at the same time.

Bill and Elizabeth, if people would only understand the freedom of being out of debt! Sacrificing a few years to have a lifetime of peace. It can be done easily but it takes hard work to be mortgage free and no debts. So glad we did it, and now we are a year retired and it feels wonderful. Still very careful, and budget while on pension. Do this while you are young for a lifetime of freedom! We did!!

61/2 years ago, I told my husband we could retire when we were totally out of debt & small amount in cash savings. I had been listening to Dave Ramsey for several years during my commute for work. I was trying to practice his advice by myself. The promise of retirement brought my husband on board. I was able to payoff $57,000 debt in under 15 months & put $$ into savings I refuse to go back into debt. I get quite upset when our financial advisor, tells us to take out a loan, instead of using our savings I’ll check out your series

I’ve been following the debt freedom plan over the past 3-4 years. I had, also, watched your series and have been following your channel for several years. I really enjoy it! We sold an acreage this past Spring and used that money to pay-off our mortgage. I’d been using the snowball plan on other debt and was able to pay off credit cards. Working on paying off vehicles now. Paying off debt really works and it’s so encouraging to have that freedom. Blessings to you both!

I am also living completely debt free. I recently also made a huge life change - moving from GA to ME (where you are filming this video - how cool is that?!?) - only taking what could fit in my car. I knew no one up here and had no job - but it has all worked out for me so far. I'm looking to purchase a house but will be paying cash because I have the funds from the sale of my GA home. Having no debt is a wonderful thing and it's achievable by anyone at any financial status. It's hard for folks to believe that an extra few dollars toward a bill really helps pay it down faster but it's true. Just be consistent and don't give up.

Me again: We are remodeling a 1964 ranch (for the last 13 years) . We began our debt free path by saying this 5 word phrase when we were tempted to buy new. When were in the store , we would look at each and say "Is it on the list". Just those 5 words broke us out of the mindset we were in at the time. By waiting for a sale or buying used we have done all the renovations and still maintain a comfortable retirement savings..

Thank you for teaching others, This is so important. I only have my rent , utilities, car insurance and cell phone/internet. No other bills. I live very low income due to illness but live well and thank God for everything I have. My car is 22 years old, Lol. But I must mention that I became ill young having two strokes and I raised my two sons with sole custody alone so I was ill with a 14 year old and I sold everything of value and we started over but very simply without debt. That was 10 years ago now. I can pay my bills and sleep good at night knowing we are ok. God bless you both 🙏.

We’ve been semi minimalists and have always lived debt free. More and more are seeking debt freedom. I’m grateful with all the mistakes I’ve made in my life, debt never became part of it. We both retired with plenty at ages 55 and 56. We’re now 60. We travel and buy what we want but enjoy living frugally. There’s a lot of power in these choices. I was in debt bondage too and the freedom of a no debt life is the best thing. I kept a spending journal and that gave me insight into where my money went. I had to change my thinking about what I bought, why I bought and want versus need. Freeing up your money that goes to paying debt gives you money to save and pay cash. Changing your thinking will simplify your relationship with money and change your spending habits. I'm going to watch the course just to reinforce my debt free life and learn any other helpful money concepts. Becoming debt free has blessed my life in so many ways.

I have been watching Dave Ramsey for several years. I was finally able to retire from my full-time job since I paid off all my debt except for my mortgage and able to work from home part time. After watching all your videos you have inspired me to sell my house. Prices are through the roof right now. I am 53 years old single and downsizing from My 3000 ft² house. I am going to buy a new fifth wheel and pay cash for it, and live in it full-time until I can save up enough money to pay cash for another house. Thank you for all your inspirations on tiny home living, and all the encouragement that you have provided. Living with all this stuff does not make sense anymore. Yes, downsizing is one very valid option to help get debt free. Sell a big house that still has a mortgage and buy a smaller one for cash! Or live cheaply in an RV so you can finish saving what you need to buy a house cash. Excellent!

We were not completely out of debt but our bills were a lot lower and in less than 2 years we would have been out of debt completely other than regular monthly rent, utility bills and life insurance. Then I got really sick and had to have many tests and be hospitalized. I have health insurance but still owe alot of medical bills because of this illness. Now we are at least 4 to 5 years away from being debt free. It has really been a downer that I know that even with insurance I cannot afford to get sick.

So sorry to hear that! Unfortunately, debt related to illness is the one debt that we have no control over. The only hope there is that once you're are debt free again, you will have the ability in the future to save and have a larger amount "stashed away" for future emergencies, including doctor bills.

I have went for years not going to the doctors except to to get my prescriptions renewed. I refused to go no matter how bad I felt. Even if I had a seizure or when I had Covid. But this time I was vomiting blood and my husband and children insisted so I went. It made me feel so much better but I am disappointed about the amount of debt we accumulated over it. We are paying every extra dollar we get on those bills.

We found your channel a couple of years ago and it has been a great encouragement to us. We have been on the debt-free journey for awhile now and every time I would feel bogged-down, making no progress, I would pop over to your channel and watch some videos for encouragement. After years of paying off debt, a second mortgage, paying for cars/weddings/house improvements as we make the extra money- we will have our mortgage paid off in December! It took us years to get in debt and years to get out. But we will have a great pay raise starting in January because we have been living on 40% of our income (and lots and lots of side/handy man jobs) and 60% going toward our mortgage. We've been doing this since 2019. Every time we would get something paid we would take that money and put it toward the next debt. Next year, we are going to invest more in retirement, SAVE more, GIVE more and we are going to start a side business (pay as we go!) on our property! We are 52 and 53, married 34 years. in August the last of 3 children will be married and goodness we are so excited to see how God leads us these next years of our life! It is still possible to get out of debt! I paid off college debt! I got out from under a mortage 20 yrs ago and brought in cash with no mortage,.I then paid off my mothers mortage. But my job had been under paying taxes for yrs and never rectified it, i always owed and couldn't live off little wages and pay it- my pension has me paying taxes in 2 states . I just looked at my statement , i have paid off $8,000, i still have like $6,000 (from $14,000). Thank God

Besides being debt-free ....maintain a balance platform in checking account that covers all automatic withdraws for annual/bi-annual/quarterly/monthly payments for a full year .... my platform is $2000 .... (actual payments total $1500, but like to cushion balance for peace of mind )..... careful planning and spending choices helped minimize budget to this place.

My husband and I paid off both of our houses off when we were 47 & 48. We continue to make house payments to ourselves. My mother told me years ago, never jeopardize the roof over your head. No ELOC loans for us. We remodeled one of our houses cash only. It took us 2 years but was well worth it. We are now 60 & 61 and have been debt free for all those years. We have always bought brand new cars for cash. And…We keep them forever. Our children have purchased homes and don’t have credit card debt. We tried to set an example. When our oldest graduated from college(scholarship for baseball - no debt) he moved back in with us for a bit. We told him he could live with us with one stipulation he had to save $1000 a month and make double car payments. When he left he had over $15,000 saved and owned his vehicle out right. We live in California and it is affordable if you chose to live within your means. If you don’t nowhere is affordable. Meal planning also saves a lot of money. Growing fruit and vegetables can be done just about anywhere. Love the comment, rich people live like they’re poor. Poor people live like they’re rich. That hits the nail on the head.

I read Millionaire next door & it really had an impact on me as it did you. I've read it several times since. My husband & I are retired & have lived our lives debt free & mortgage free. We also flipped a few houses & owned several rentals which we'll never do again. It's important to mention if spouses aren't on the same page financially, 1 spender, 1 saver, it will be hard going. Seen alot of marriages go under for that reason. Keep up the great videos!

That was me 35 years ago. Spouse who thought she should spend as much as she wanted and as the man it was my job to find the money. I would be struggling to find money to pay for my gas to work and I'd come home and find out she's bought a half dozen very high end designer hoodies, more than I made in a week, for the teen boys. Then I was the big meanie for refusing to let them keep the designer clothes. It was a long and messy ten year divorce but eventually she did learn she could only get so much money out of me. My present wife is more frugal than I am. I can't tell you how much better life is when you live within your means.

yes, i agree with you. after university i didnt have the typical support from parents like other kids have so i ha to be homeless for a little bit. forbearance understood. when i got myself settled i started paying back. it wasnt easy. i ate rice and beans. i dont have children, and i live in a large city so i didnt need a car. i meed older well established people and they still have student loans. they have children, grandchildren cars homes and all the other trappings. its possible to be debt free you just have to like rice and beans, lol.

The issue you had with those rentals (like others) is when you say "We owned 5 houses" You never really owned them you owed so much on them that you lost them. If you actually owned them you would have not lost them. When your rental income is only a few dollars more than your mortgage you will lose that house.

One thing I didn’t share with you, is that I filed for Social Security when I was 66. I was still working, so I took my SS check each month and paid it on my car. When I retired at 68, my car was paid off! It’s a 2016, and I’m 73, so I think it will be my last car! Lol!

Great advice and goes against the common narrative that buying on credit is a painless easy process…when in fact it creates slaves to debt. We too are a debt free senior couple, 67 and 71 years old. We still spend, but now we pay for it in full. So folks need to understand that debt freedom means you can spend whatever you want on whatever you need or want, as long as it is within your means and budget. I also want to mention the lack of debt allows us to fully tithe without worrying if we can afford it. God blesses us with abundance when we tithe to his church, it is truly amazing. I saw your eliminate death series. I wrote down the headers and figure it out like you suggested. As of date today except for mortgage, my debts paid off including my cars. I might have had my mortgage a little closer to being paid off but I used money to up keep the outside of the house, driveway and things like that.

About buying a used car, I was recently in an accident and my car was totaled. Getting a car was crazy! Buying a used car was as expensive as a new car! Maybe you are really good at fixing cars, but whenever I’ve bought a used car, it just became a huge financial drain to keep those cars maintained. I decided to be without a car and was on a waiting list for a new car. I talked to God about my situation and I got a car two months earlier than expected. My opportunity to buy a used car only solidified me getting the new car. My friends that buy used cars are always in a bad situation with a car that breaks down and just pouring money into keeping it running. If you have to buy new, then you do whatever you can to pay it off.

Thank God for getting you both to Maine safely. Great video. As Christians, there are two scriptures that have guided our debt free living. Romans 13: 8-10, " owe no man anything but love him" and Luke 9:23, "if any will follow me, let him DENY HIMSELF, take up his cross daily and FOLLIW ME" Jesus owned no home, basically had the clothes on His back, we all have so much more than that. We must be good stewards.

Your advice is helpful. I had to take a mortgage but for ten years at a low fixed rate. I am paying extra on the principal each month. If I were renting, I would pay more per month, so I am okay with it. My daughter and son-in-law have only mortgage debt. It is nice to not have other debt.

I am so glad you are sharing your experience and knowledge on a pathway to debt freedom. I have had this mindset for my whole life or at least till I can remember. And believes it is essential for everyone to have this knowledge as well. With that I am relatively debt-free. The debt I do have is built up by daily necessities. I am a frugal person and I don't need lavish things, practical in how I budget my funds. The small debt that I have is due to the extreme attacks of joblessness. This is so stressful, especially since this situation has been prayed on for so long and by so many people. To be close to debt-free in this situation is miraculous. Though I would prefer to have a steady income and control the freedom of being debt-free. I have been a set designer, museum exhibition worker, grade school substitute, tutor, and artist in my career background. The recent sales of my artwork have kept me afloat. These sales are not guaranteed but are much appreciated when they happen. Change of subject. This summer, I am making plans to go to Maine. I have 4 sets of friends that have places and or live year-round. They span from the middle of Maine to the top along the coastline route 1 ( I believe the main road that connects them.) I am bringing this up because I thought it would be nice to meet you since you are there. But our schedules don't match. Anyway, I'm thinking maybe that will happen in the future.

Awwww I am still here. Life changed abruptly for me. I had to move after splitting from my Honey. I was able to place 13K on a tiny home. I owe 50K now. I will use your plan once again and take care of this debt. I will let you know in a few months where I stand on this loan. My home is 350 sq ft. I love it!!!!!! I am excited to once again use your plan.i am still driving my 2000 Yukon. I was saving up for a newer car but now I will use that savings to pay off the tiny home. I have to figure out what I owe on my taxes and then I will know my time line..I have 40K saved. Once again you two have motivated. me. God bless you both!!

We are so close that it's driving me even harder to make it happen. Our vehicles are paid for and the thing I'm working on is our mortgage. I finally have it down below $10,000. I've been adding a little extra to the monthly payment and if I am diligent to continue on and nothing major happens, then I hope to have us completely debt-free by next May. I was just diagnosed with cancer yesterday, so the medical bills might enter into the picture again. I just paid off nearly $10,000 in medical debt from 2 surgeries in 2020. I'm trusting God to see this through with me.

People look at a frugal lifestyle and think that it is a life of being deprived and doing without. Nothing could be farther from the truth it is getting the most of your money and making every penny count. It means small problems are nothing and medium problems are small and large problems are manageable. You can use the money for "fun" things but it has to be intentional and not a case of I don't know where it went.
