Actually, what you are looking at here is a demonstration of how very simple and streamlined the defense and counterattack(s) are performed. Darren is demonstrating three ways to defend against a number 1 strike with optional counterattacks. The first defense that he demonstrates begins with an outside basic, followed by a cross-block, then a inside sweep, and each defense goes directly and instantly into a counterattack where he is demonstrating the many different striking methods that can be used to neutralize an attacker. One strike may not be enough to stop an attacker for many reasons, so once the defense is is performed, you may very likely have to resort to a barrage of multiple strikes and counterattacks until the attacker is neutralized; and of course, far fewer if you are defending with a bladed weapon. To better understand the speed at which these defenses and counterattacks are performed, refer to the basics of Serrada that are demonstrated and performed in his training videos(KZbin), Volumes 1 - 3, 4 - 6, and 7 - 9(Notice how fast his son Chez performs the basic defenses and counterattacks) With practice, these defenses and counterattacks can be performed at lightning speed and are extremely effective. Darren is simply providing a fundamental understanding in slow motion. A lot is hidden from the viewer as to the actual application. It is not as complicated as it may look from a novice point of view.

some have suggested that if one goes to a lot of trouble to get the knife in, don't pull it out until its been moved around inside them to do more damage and finish the job. they said to make sure it's justified because arrest, law suit, and possible prison time may follow. depends on many factors. see the news.

Does anyone else think that there is overuse of strikes in FMA? You could say if you were using a machete, one block/one strike would kill or seriously injure an attacker. Less so with a knife, but again, you wouldn't block just move and thrust . I love FMA, but for reality, I do think the drills are too evolved as it falls into what all systems do , make defence complicated and too detailed. I respect the instructors knowledge.

He's showing advance technique built off of the basics. This is not meant to be taught to beginners lol 😅 I'm a Serrada instructor.

Bruv, I think you forgot the MA in FMA is martial arts. There are practical and artistic techniques all martial arts have.

FMA is not for you, go play video games or take ballet. Or better yet, go play with Barbie dolls.
