Here's the direct links to each method:
First method (small knot): 1:08
Second method (secure knot): 3:24
Third method (double knot): 4:35
In our second "How To" video, we will explain 3 different ways of tying the belt for Aikido, Judo, Karate or any other martial arts using a Judo type belt.
Those 3 methods are perfectly standard and can be used as you like in Judo, Karate, Aikido, Jujutsu, etc.
The first method presented is the one used by Seido's founder Jordy.
With this method, you get a very small knot, very suitable if you wear a Hakama, but without, it might loosen during practice.
With the second method, you get a knot that sits tightly and that would be especially recommended for Judo, Karate, Jujutsu or Aikido, if you don't wear a Hakama.
Finally, the third method is more something like your "last chance" if your belt keeps loosening during practice, no matter what you do. It's probably more suitable for Judo and Jujutsu than Aikido or Karate.
There is no "best", "official" or "standard" method in any martial art (but some Koryu perhaps), so in general, you are free to use the one that suits you the best.
If your teacher recommends another technique or if you have your own (better) idea how to tie it, don't hesitate to leave a comment and give us some insights !
In our first "How To" video, we will explain 3 different ways of putting on and tying a Hakama for Aikido.
Those 3 methods could also be applied in some ways to Iaido, Kendo and of course, any Jujutsu-like art that uses a classic Judo type black belt.
Those methods are, however, not suitable for wearing a Hakama at a formal occasion.
The first method presented is the one used by Seido's founder Jordy. With this method, the Hakama should stay in place. The second method, is the most common in Aikido. The third one is very less common but is very likely the best method, if your Hakama doesn't stay in place during practice when using the other two methods.
There is no "best", "official" or "standard" method in Aikido (unless your group/dojo has its own rule of course), so we are just presenting those methods as tips to help you find a way to tie your Hakama.
If your teacher recommends another technique or if you have your own (better) idea how to do it, don't hesitate to leave a comment and give us some insights !

Thank you so much for this, for a few years I've been trying a few methods to stop my belt from going loose during training to stopping it from hitting me during the warm ups/warm downs. And your second method was so clean and clear, I think I have found my solution to belt tying for many years to come now. So thank you so much once again!!

Thank you so much! The second method works wonderfully--it looks clean and doesn't come loose in class.

Interestingly, the belt at 2:19 "spirals in" around the body counterclockwise (if the rotation axis points upwards) but the belt in another video "How to tie an OBI (belt) for Aikido and Aiki-jujutsu" (which corresponds to knot #2 I think, but tied differently) "spirals in" around the body clockwise. Do senseis have a preference? 🤔

black belt on black background.. can you show the 3rd knot with a bicolor belt?

+Franck Royer The difference between belt and background is pretty clear on my phone. Try watchinh in 1080p, or pushing the brightness of your device if you're using a mobile.

+Franck Royer thanks for your comment. Technically, it's a white background, since the belt is tied in front of the dogi, but I see what you mean. We've reworked the contract to make sure the belt stays well visible, so as seishinjp said, you might want to make sure you're at 1080p with a bright screen. As for the "bicolor belt", Seido is a 100% traditionally made in Japan equipment brand concept, so we do not plan to use such accessories in our videos.

Usefull ! Many thanks.Congratulation for speaking English. Otsukalesama ! By the way , you maybe could consider an English (instead of French) title with only "(sous-titré)" written in French ? Mata ashita

+Musique du Provinois You're welcome. Thanks for your comment. Our videos titles and descriptions display in English, French, Japanese, German and eventually Arabic depending on your location and browser settings, for those translated. It's a 2015 KZbin feature, so you want to make sure you get everything in English, you should consider switching your locales accordingly.
