SmartThings Tutorial - How to Setup the Ring Outdoor Sensor in the SmartThings App

In the episode I will give you instructions for setting up the Ring Alarm Outdoor Contact Sensor in the SmartThings App. I will also introduce the Aeotec Range Extender 7. The range extender can enhance z-wave and z-wave plus signals by 250 percent.

Thanks Bud, this will work perfect for my rolling gate. Perfect to delete the batteries and solder in a external power supply, not a big fan of lithium batteries outside.

Actually, I wasn't all that jacked up on monitoring my shed. I was just looking for a practical application to feature the sensor. I found an alternative application that is a hit with the wife. Hi Shawn. A sensor can only be paired to one z-wave capable hub at a time. So the answer is no, unfornately.

Hi Bud have you tried adding the outdoor Ring siren to smartthings? I wonder if you can as that would be very useful?

I have not. Do you know if it is a Z-wave device? I am using the dome siren. It has several alarm sounds as well as different times.

Edge related question… if I install this and change the dth to the z-wave plus door sensor (I think it was)…. Will the edge driver for that stock dth automatically be migrated over when the edge driver migration happens? Or am I better off waiting a couple months until after the migration? Will there be native edge driver for this ring sensor like some other ring products? Thanks

Hello. I believe that since the Ring Alarm devices are using a stock DTH that they will be migrated automatically sometime before the end of the Groovy IDE. That said, I have submitted a question on the ST Community forum to inquire about this while providing data elements for both the Motion and Contact sensors. This request, which can be viewed here: community.smartthings.com/t/post-requests-for-edge-drivers-here-community-created/237327/957?u=buds_smart_home , should provide us some clarity on this question. What if you were to install the Z-wave extender outside and a bit higher up? So there is a clear line of sight, maybe then the signal could reach the barn?

Worked quite well and easy setup. Turns out I already had the driver added. I two of these outdoor ring sensors on my gate. One for open position and one for closed. When opening, Alexa announces its opening and two led ambient light turn on red. When fully open the other sensor announces gate open. It also announces when it starts to close and is used to time the gates length of time to stay open. The the closed sensor then announces gate is closed and turns lights off. This was all mostly done to make sure dog doesn’t get put outside while gate is open because the gate is not visible from inside the house without going to cam views. Also great for security and automation. Sorry if tmi. Thanks for your help.

You could try, but I think that is pushing the limits of the detection range. I believe my mailbox is about 40 feet from my Z-Wave extender.

I managed to connect it and get the settings changed on the smartthings device manager but now on the app it is just showing a cloud with a diagonal dash. Hopefully I can get connection reestablished so I can install this on my fence gate. Any recommendations?

Sorry I'm just now getting back to you. Any luck getting it connected. My first thought is perhaps a weak Wi-Fi signal. Did you try to pair it near your ST Hub?

If you need to install a contact sensor on your shed, you might have to use a Yolink contact sensor. That can reach up to 1/4 mile. BUT, is only connects to Alexa but not to SmartThings.

Just received my ring outdoor contact sensors and they don't rapid flash after holding the orange button, and I can't get passed the "prepare your device" page in the app

There is not any “prepare your device“ page in the SmartThings app. Are you using the SmartThings app. Are you using SmartThings hubs version two or three or an Aeotec hub?

These are the steps that I followed to pair my Ring Contact sensors. This process worked for both the indoor and outdoor sensors: Go in to SmartThings and click on the + to add a device. Scan the QR code on the sensor Hold down the button on the sensor for 10 seconds Wait about 30 seconds and SmartThings will find the device and pair it. Give your contact sensor a preferred name and save. Go to the ST app, refresh or restart the app to see that the app has updated the sensor with the new handler. Go to automation and you should see all the available choices Note: You must install the Edge Driver prior to paring your contact sensor to the ST hub. The app I'm using is called SmartThings, and I'm using ST hub v3. But my app screens look different from yours, after scanning, I get a screen similar to what you get that says getting everything ready, but then my next screen doesn't ask to select room and hub, it goes straight to the page similar to your next screen, your next screen says "preparing" and "get your device ready" which is where I get stuck for minutes with no response, I hold the orange button for 3, 5, 10 even 30 seconds and get no rapid flash, the sensor manual says to hold for 3 seconds and it should just give 3 flashes at a time, which it does but no luck. I haven't installed the driver you mentioned though, that might be the problem.

Yes, try to install the Driver first. You may need to run the z wave exclusion utility to exclude the device before you try to pair it a second time.
