Great video. I've seen reports that Beltoise had his race license suspended, but his career history shows no interruption in his race participations at any time between this incident and his retirement. The problem is the two cars that came through seemed to be racing, so presumably either there weren't any yellow flags shown to Giunti, or he disregarded them. I'm sure if Giunti had hit and killed Beltoise, but survived himself, people wouldn't judge Beltoise so harshly.

+Phil Woodward Keep in mind it was considered a common occurrence for drivers to do what Beltoise did. Giunti himself and every other driver likely would have done the same as him. In fact I believe Beltoise was not the only racer to do this in this race several drivers ran out of gas.

+Phil Woodward Also part of the reason his career wasn't really interrupted was because he was accepted back into racing following his suspension almost immediately. Part of it was that everyone knew they would've done the same as him, they'd be hypocrites to shun only him about it.

@@jasonvaivada4998 he didn't have to be accepted, he was under contract with Matra and was their best driver. Of course they put him back in a car as soon as possible.

Jean-Pierre Beltroise was a very lucky man in that moment. Didn't expect him just to walk away. And to the younger people, calling Beltroise stupid for pushing his car to the finish linie: times were very different by then. Today everyone is over-horning everyting down, thanks to the Internet and over-ruling.

Yeah, definitely from a different era. I don't think they even let 'em get out of the car these days unless it's on fire.

Mi tío estaba en la tribuna y contaba que la gente aplaudía a Beltoise cuando empujaba su auto, en aquellos tiempos no era raro eso. Después del accidente la misma gente lo insultaba.

sounds like 70's porn music, and they only film the start finish/line , TV coverage and organisation = 0 , Maybe Bernie Eccelston was not so bad after all

This was not the TV coverage, which was in black and white. It's some guy recording on his own, likely meant to make a movie.

"I think that the accident was bound to happen as it was caused by an appalling number of circumstances. I think that most drivers would have acted as I did...they would have pushed the car, they would have tried to go back to the pits...I was at the end of a rather slow bend and there was plenty of room on the road to pass. The road was quite wide and I never thought there was any danger. Anyway I had to take the car away from the middle of the road, because it was stopped in the middle. Before the accident I never felt I was personally in danger nor did I feel that I was endangering other people's safety. I shall certainly not stay for the next event because the organisers have asked me not to compete. Personally. I would not have taken the decision to refuse to compete in that event because I was committed to do so and also because I think this accident was caused by a combination of circumstances and it did not occur through my fault." - Jean-Pierre Beltoise

It looks like at the start, he was pushing the car on the left side of the track, then at the time of the accident, he was in the middle. Could he have been crossing the track to get to the pits?

+Marco Molinari That is right. Beltoise had been pushing his car back to the pits for a while since he was out of fuel. His stupid action ended up in the death of Giunti. There was even a juristic case for murderer being set up for Beltoise : Ignazio Giunti was in the lead, and stuck behind Mike Parkes who was a lap down. In the blind corner called "Horquilla" suddenly Beltoise had pushed his in the middle of the track. When Parkes did see the car, he quickly turned his car to the left to avoid a crash, but Giunti being angry since Parkes held him up for a full lap, had no chance of ever seeing the Matra of Beltoise, and thought Parkes finally gave way to him... and collided full speed into the Matra. Such a massively stupid action by Beltoise, who lost his racing license, but had it returned only 6 months later... Ofcourse, Beltoise had never the intension of "killing" Giunti, and yes, racing was so different from nowadays... but Beltoise should have never have gotten his racing license back, never !

So the guy pushing the car didn't die but the guy that crashed into him did? How did he not get cut in half? Anyway this was so unnecessary. If they would only have had a full course yellow or at least strictly enforced local yellows.
@almostfm
@almostfm 9 жыл бұрын
+Dethmeister Remember, this was 1971. Unless the track was completely blocked, you kept racing, and local yellows were more of a warning of trouble than a requirement to slow down. This was only a year after the accident with Ickx and Oliver in the Spanish Grand Prix. Both cars caught fire, but the fire equipment was on the inside of the curve and they were on the outside, so they were spraying water _across_ the track and guys kept racing through it.

+Dethmeister He wasn't cut in half because he was next to the car on the moment of impact, there is another angle of the accident where you can see it, but very sad that this happened, just because of bad organization i think, full course yellow would have saved him
@Dethmeister
@Dethmeister 8 жыл бұрын
+Lars Bouten , Oh ok. Looks like that's him at 0:51 walking across the track and at 0:58 . I watched the other angle. He should have just left his car where it stopped and walked away, at least the other drivers would have known where it was at lap after lap. I guess he figured in such a long race they could have gotten a good result if he could just make it to the pit to refuel.
@hejamodo
@hejamodo 8 жыл бұрын
They didn't think that way in those days. He was aiming for the pits to refuel and continue the race, as they all would have done. Had he broken down, he would have left the car on the side of the track. Not all tracks had separate pits in 1971, they serviced the cars on one side of the start/finish straight so why would there be a problem pushing your car along to get there. Safety was a nice catch fence, a fire proof race suit and a helmet.

What kind of an idiot adds background music to a fatal accident? The video proves that no one tried to stop Beltoise. Huge combined stupidity and lack of responsibility on both organization and driver.
