I have 14 chicks that I just purchased. With so many breeds having the broodiness breed out of them. It was a big issue. I want to have a flock that will keep itself going and this way I will have roosters for dinner and hens to continue laying eggs and raising babies for the future. Definitely a stainable chicken breed!

Yep that is a good quality to have if you want to sustain your own flock. I have mostly Buffs and Light Brahmas...both make good mothers and have similar qualities. The Buffs are a little bit better in a free range setting. My Brahma roosters are my favorite though. They aren't particularly "affectionate" but they aren't aggressive towards people and have excellent guarding instincts and protecting the flock is their #1 priority. It helps that my largest Brahma weighs 14 pounds 😅 Buff roosters can be a little bit more confrontational IME

I keep hearing how "docile" and "gentle" Buffs are...mine are bullies and I have no worries about them getting bullied by other breeds. Quite the opposite with mine actually because they are pretty large chickens

Agree - though I found size to be the opposite. I just got some late last year and second batch beginning of this year - two blood lines as I was going to keep them for eggs and meat. Sadly these birds are no longer a good dual purpose bird. They are also assholes and noisy (now freezer fresh and quiet). They have almost no fleshing in the breast and take forever to grow out to their pitiful max weight. The roosters were not even hitting ~5lbs at 20 weeks. I've switched to Rangers and I'm going to breed them with American Bresse to create my own dual purpose bird. The dual purpose breeds have gone down hill in the US; smaller, not as healthy - I've had 4 Hoover Hatchery Buff Os die for no apparent reason - all from Hoover seemed small - 4-5 lbs max.) . These birds used to reach 7-10 lbs. The commercial hatcheries let anything breed and it's affecting the quality and size of these once great birds.

Thank you for your knowledge and the chicken fax . 100% correct they are great animals if you are a beginner farmer but you do need a barn for farm animals for protection

My golden buff hen one and half year but still didnt go broody what's the problem
@china_sickness70054 жыл бұрын
A lot of chickens bread for egg production won’t go broody at all. Buff Orpingtons are known for going broody but it just depends on the individual chicken. She might need to get a little older. You could also try leaving around six eggs in her nest during the spring to give her the idea. Sometimes it takes some encouraging

So, if someone is selling me "Black Orpington" pullets yet they appear to have black face and comb... are they still Orpingtons or are some other breed?
@china_sickness70054 жыл бұрын
Any Orpington should have a red comb. There is a black Orpington but it is solid black with a red comb. This person probably had a mix of two different breeds.

What the other person said...there are Black Orpingtons but they have a red comb. Australorps are essentially black Orpingtons as well but again they have a red comb

You can also get them shipped to your post office by Murray Mcmurray hatchery, cackle hatchery, or Myre hatchery. I ordered seventeen chicks from Mcmurray last spring and they all arrived happy and healthy

I grew up raising these birds over 50+ I thought of it as pets as a kid, but dad thought otherwise... til this date I can never eat a fresh chicken even though it was best fed and raised.
