I need to update my video on the Buffs. We had ten of them and they got a bit broody. They are lovely birds and large girls. They just got broody and decided they wanted to be better Mothers versus egg layers. We sold nine of our Buffs to people who wanted Mothers to hatch eggs. They are all out being great Moms now. We kept one Buff and she is a good layer and leader of the flock. I hope you enjoy your girls. They are beautiful birds and great lap chickens. Cheers!

We've got some beautiful breeds. We don't have any Buffs any more. They are great Moms and were going broody. We sold nine of them to people who wanted to have broody hens. They went to great homes! We kept one and she became part of our family. Unfortunately, while we were on vacation, she was taken from us (we think by a hawk or eagle). She is missed. Beautiful hens! I have four 5 week old buff orpingtons, one of which is very sweet and curious. I named her Mary, however, I think I might have to change the name to Mario 🤭. We'll know for sure by Fall if we've got a rooster or not, and if we do, I hope he stays sweet and curious 😊
@TheOldSwedesFarm
@TheOldSwedesFarm Жыл бұрын
Oh no. Where did you get the chicks? We always buy chicks from Hoover's Hatchery and we only ask for hens. The hens are really big birds. They stand above all the other hens. I can't imagine how large a rooster will be! Keep us posted on your Buffs. Cheers!
@Cindy75K
@Cindy75K Жыл бұрын
You should know by week 7 if it's a rooster. The combs are bigger and are starting to pink up and waddles appear. The hens combs are short and stay yellow for awhile. Make sure you have at least 8 hens to a rooster, or he will tear them up.
@Cindy75K
@Cindy75K Жыл бұрын
@@TheOldSwedesFarm The Roosters get a bit bigger than the hens, my roo was sweet, a little protective of his hens (I didn't have enough hens for him) but not the nightmare rooster that attacks everyone---but I lost him earlier this year to a bobcat, my hens survived and ran off. Even though you buy pullets, sexing is not 100% accurate (90%-95%) and in those bins at the feed store or even from a hatchery there are cockerels mixed in. Unless you buy "sex linked" pullets or older pullets where they know by then they're pullets. I bought 7 chicks from the pullet choices at a feed store, ended up with 2 cockerels 2 years ago. This year I bought sex linked only, took a chance on 1 barred rock, she is a pullet though, was hoping for a cockerel.

Thank you for the information. Could you tell me about how long it took them to begin laying? I purchased 6 Buffs and 6 Reds together as chicks and the Reds have been producing eggs for going on 3 weeks now and not 1 egg from my Buffs. I'm sure they will at some point. I keep telling them rent is due but I don't think they are listening. lol
@TheOldSwedesFarm
@TheOldSwedesFarm 2 жыл бұрын
The Reds and others started here about 16 weeks. Cute little eggs and they built up to large and XL. The Buffs waited until they were about 20 weeks before we saw them laying. They are a larger bird and took longer to fill out and mature. They will get there but we need patience with the Buffs (it's hard when you want them laying!!). Cheers!

I'm really interested in chickens, and it sounds like Orpingtons might be for me. But I live in the Gulf Coast, would they be happy here?
@TheOldSwedesFarm
@TheOldSwedesFarm 6 ай бұрын
Orpingtons have a thick coat of down and a big coat of feathers. You will have to watch them in warm and hot weather. Hot weather can kill chickens more than extreme cold. Just be ready to give them lots of water and cold treats any day that it is hot. We ended up not liking the Orpingtons since they got broody too often and wouldn't lay. We did a video on the two best breeds for beginners. We'd recommend those two breeds. Check it out.

We have thought about adding in some buff orphintons. We have a barred rock that is like a stuffy lol. My daughter just loves cuddly chickens. How did you break your broody hens? We have had 2 over the last little while.. One was just determined to hatch some eggs.. it was so cute but we dont have a rooster.. 🤣
@TheOldSwedesFarm
@TheOldSwedesFarm 2 жыл бұрын
Add some Buffs. You (and your daughter) will love the breed. We have a metal cage for our broody girls. A couple nights in the cage (with food and water but nothing soft to lay on) will break them of the broodiness. Hard (cool) floor cures the broodiness. Hope this helps.
@chelseahappyhome
@chelseahappyhome 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheOldSwedesFarm Oh thank you. I will try that. You put it in the coop with all the other birds?
@TheOldSwedesFarm
@TheOldSwedesFarm 2 жыл бұрын
@@chelseahappyhome Since we use the pole barn, which is large, we have the cage in the corner. It stays protected from predators but still near the other girls so they can say hello. It's on the floor of the barn with no straw or bedding. The cool floor of the barn cools their breast and doesn't make them want to nest. A couple days of this and they snap back into being good, non-broody girls! I think you can see the cage in the corner of my review of the Hen Gear Nesting Box. Hope this helps.

Just starting my chickens for the first time since my youth, God help me cyz my kids and grands are SO against me doing this, think they want me to fail, my coop will be an insulated 8x10 metal shed, 5 nesting boxes and roosts for my birds, the yard will be contained 10x12 since we have predator birds around, hawks, eagles, etc,so enclosed top, praying no bear issues, cuz we are in black bear territory...ANY suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated, thank you in advance...anxious to see my Buffs come, also nervous cuz some want me to fail...thank you💗
@TheOldSwedesFarm
@TheOldSwedesFarm Жыл бұрын
If you are putting up a contained run for the hens, use hardware cloth instead of chicken wire. It is more expensive, but it will keep predators out. Chicken wire only keeps chickens out, not predators. With a 10x12 run, I'd say you could have up to about ten hens. Buffs are beautiful hens but they can go broody. I'd get half Buffs and half Barred Plymouth Rocks. The Rocks are great layers and don't go broody. We're going to get more in the spring. Good luck!!
