My Buff Orpington rooster is only aggressive toward my cats and dogs when they get to close to his girls but never toward me or the the kids. He is what I would call just aggressive enough to be protective but not silly or dangerous. Love mine as well.

We had three Buff Orpington hens that layed very well. During their peak laying time, we got 15-18 eggs per week from the three of them. Unfortunately, within a month's time, possum(s) got all three! (Yes ,we learned our lesson about security!) I have a fundamental question: When we get to the Itsy Farm permanently and have a flock of birds (probably 25+), I would like to have ALL Buff Orpingtons. I have noticed on most KZbin Homesteader channels, the flocks contain a *_variety_* of breeds. I understand diversity and such, but is there a reason NOT to have all one breed of chickens?

Buffs are my ALL TIME FAVORITE TOO! I have had them for years ...they where my first breed ...they go broody all the time and make great mommas! They lay when no one else is! I live in the same county as you actually I just realized! So maybe they just do well in our area ...IDK but I LOVE THEM!

I have a buff who got heat stroke I think last summer when it was so hot here in GA. Since then she has not been strong as before. This summer she seems to be loosing weight and not acting like she feels well. Any ideas what I can feed her to fatten her up make her feel better?

I've had (and still have) Orpington hens. They are friendly and steady egg layers. The Orpington roosters that I've had have been very aggressive, they've gone after my German shepherd and me almost daily. I have had one however that stood between his favorite hen and a hawk, he wasn't aggressive but stand offish (that's a rooster for you though)

My buffs are the least friendly in my 11 girls :( & they have been fighting since they were 1 week old lol The low pecking order buff, very timid, is now fussing with the other one and she bloodied up her comb >.< in a fight. She's fine now but I have to say that the Barred Rocks are the nicest hens with Golden Laced Wyandottes 2nd on that. Perhaps my genetics are messed up from hatchery strains. One of the Buffs has a very small comb and the other one is larger and flopped over. Who knows?

I have two Buff Orpington chicks. They're now 11 weeks old and are in the house until they're older and it's warmer. Anyway these girls are so super cuddly and friendly. They are also so gentle and easy going. I also have various bantams and hyliners. I would say the Orpingtons are the friendliest - Miss Snuggles particularly. I love them. Actually I love all my girls. Chickens are a joy and very addictive.

The birds you get from a hatchery aren't true orpingtons. They are tiny. I have real Orpingtons that lay better than my hatchery birds ever did, and at 8 lbs for a grown hen, are for real dual purpose.

Broodiness is the #1 reason I bought the 7 buff orphingtons at Rural King. (I know. I will eventually get a rooster from a proper breeder.) Looks like they all might be hens. Its only three months since I bought the biddies. Fingers crossed that its 6 hens and one rooster. :-)

Love my Buffs!!! Friendly, great layers, good for meat too (although mine tend to retire, lol). They're like puppies with feathers. We have others. Our 2nd choice is ISA Reds, also very sweet, dual purpose. The boys have chosen other breeds for looks (but we insist on purpose focus). I had one mutant GIANT buff rooster. He was probably a mistake in labeling, as he had a mean thing for me. He's gone now, and the new roosters that came up out of the flock are nice.

Hello Appalchias, Thank you for all the info! Do you believe the chicken is on a laying schedule? I have been keeping them close to the coop for laying there eggs. However, I'm wondering if I kept them near the coop till 12:00 then let them go to another enclosed area 12:00- dusk and then back to there coop for the night. Would they acclimate to a schedule or dropped as needed? Thank you

Haha, I was wondering if you were going to get to broodiness in your list of qualities. A lot of people don't know that most chickens bred today won't sit and hatch their own eggs. It's good to have a few hens that'll go broody if you want to be self-sustaining. But I always want to have at least one Buff Orpington in my small flock, even though I buy my chicks. They're so bright and pretty, and they are sweet-natured besides They make your flock look good!.

Did someone mention Ameraucanas or Araucanas? I know I did *not* in my Vid, but I mentioned Easter Eggers as being flighty. They are at least in my experience with many of them as well as my Ameraucanas. When I said "Black Aussie" above... that is a short reference in the chicken world to Black Australorps. They are nothing like Ameraucanas, Araucanas, or EE's. In fact, they are a heavy, dual purpose Black chicken that lays up to 360 eggs per year and are usually less flightly than most birds just like the Buffs. That is why I suggested the "Black Aussies" to her question and refer to them in my homesteading Vids as one of the best homesteading chickens for sustainability. Hope this cleared that up. Thanks so much! xo

I'm looking into a good chicken breed to raise strictly for meat and not at all for eggs. I'm wondering what to do about all the eggs that the chickens will lay, or perhaps if there are measures that can be taken that could discourage or at least mini size egg laying. I have never raised chickens, and realize my question may sound like a stupid one. I don't eat eggs and have zero intention of collecting and selling any. I am aiming for somewhere around 30 chickens or less to raise and put in the freezer every so often, with maybe one or two breeding pairs to keep the flock going. If I don't collect any eggs, will the hens eventually just stop laying, or am I kidding myself?

If you aren't interested in eggs AT ALL...EVER...then teach the hens to eat the eggs. Just break some of their eggs in their presence, and let them eat them.
