Just purchased 4 buff chicks today! Along with 5 bantams left at Tractor Supply. I built a coop before my cancer diagnosis in 2022, so I’m happy to be able to fill it up! I also have 5 quail that just started laying. Life is so, so good.

I have 7 of them. I love my girls. They are all so sweet and i get an average of 1 egg every other day per bird. They are also fairly quiet girls. No real fussing or fighting. I love this breed. They are even friendly with my dog. My dog thinks they are her babies. She won't even let my cat look at them without chasing her off. Lol. Good dog, great chickens

Yes they are a very friendly breed. I have 11Buff Orpington hens and will be picking up a Buff Orpington rooster tomorrow. Whenever I enter their run they all come running to me to see if I have treats for them. They are only 9 weeks old but are already big girls.

My sister had Buff Orpington’s. She loved them! She said they were like having a puppy dog. 💖😊👍. Then her husband decided to give away all the chickens and had other plans for the land so she was sad to have to let them go! 🙁 She said they were so friendly! 🌷👍😁

I appreciate this info. I just got a hen. She is easily over 8 months. I am a novest. Her foot was damaged due to the fact she was in a meshed cage. It is healing as we speak. Prior to this, i purchased two rhoade island red chicks on a whim 8 months ago. One ended up being a rooster. I have parrots. To be true,I thought they were roasters that lived for a year or so. I love animals. I thought I would just give them a good life. Fast forward, my birds sleep in the house at night and roam in my verdent backyard in the day. They are both super friendly and love to be held in the evening. The reason why I wanted to thank you was that I didn't know the breed of my new hen. I understand her personality now. She is extremely docile, loves human interaction, and doesn't roam too much rather seeking shade under bushes , trees, or just wanting to come inside the house and hang out. I was concerned prior to this video because I just thought it would have the same personality traits as my reds who are much more active and hyper curious. Thankyousomuch God bless this world's messes

6:33 This is excellent! May I add this observation; that your knowledge may increase through my experience. Buffs are excellent free-ranged with no additional feed but cracked corn early in the day and at sunset. Mine have complete access to a creek, a deep hollow, ridge, open field and mature woods. In the last month I shot AT A BOBCAT and two days later a Red Fox. My chickens are smart and act as a flock. I also have hawks and falcons; my buffs fear the hawks and are very vocal in their assessment of danger. Please be so advised and refrain from repeating the error of stating that they are poor foragers... God Bless You.

The buff Orpington hens are really sweet, just shy. Welsummers are also pretty friendly, so not sure you had an optimal experience with them to be saying they're aggressive. The buff Orpington roosters, on the other hand, are extremely aggressive. We had to put ours down because he would flog us every time we'd try to throw them some feed and would chase us down when we let the flock out to free range. We handle all our chickens a lot when they're young and get them used to human interaction, as well as establish our dominance with all the roosters, so whatever you've done to make your buff rooster friendly I would love to know. In the meantime I'd like to add that Ameraucanas are amazing companions, to both buff Orpingtons and humans. They're the favorite bird on our farm, super friendly hens *and* roosters, only downfall is they can be shy if you don't handle them often. We had a splash Ameraucana rooster named Jack Sparrow that would always run up to us to be picked up and cuddled when we'd come out of the house, best personality I've ever seen in a chicken.

Handling male chick's does bond them but can make them more aggressive. Something about confusion of species in their mind. Make playthings of your hens. Give the roosters some space.

I am pretty sure one of the buffs is the leader...although a red is a close second. I let them roam my backyard almost everyday and they are doing great. They've only been laying about 3 weeks. Hmmm, my Buff Orpingtons are a little different....they are much larger than my red star, black sex link and rhode islands so while they don't "rule the roost" they definitely tend to bully the other hens. Mine do not lay daily, but are reliably laying about every other day or so.

I know this is off topic, but I can’t find the information anywhere. We have about ten Easter Eggers, a CA Gray, and a Marian. They were born around Aug 20th. We are at 20 weeks now with no eggs yet. Currently, we are at 10 hours of daylights per day. Do we need to do supplemental light to get the started? Everything we have read makes it sound like we should be getting eggs by now. Ideas? Comments?

Update: 10 hens two roosters. One rooster went to the neighbors. He was a large breed and was wrecking havoc on the hens. In a typical week, we get 10 eggs a day once, and occasionally twice. Mostly 8 or 9 eggs per day. In Feb, we set 34 eggs in our incubator. 21 hatched, with 7 roosters, and 14 hens. Of the 34 eggs that we set, 24 were large/extra large eggs from our neighbors flock of Rhode Island Reds. The rest were small/mediums from or flock of California Grays, Marian’s, and Easter Eggers, so it is quite the mix of a mix of birds. We gave away 5 of the roosters (Rhode Islands), and one of the other two just started crowing.
