When I first went to Hay River back in 1980 Merlin Carter was my landlord as I rented a trailer from him in Rowes trailer court. He would come by every month and collect the rent and we would sit and have a beer. Fascinating man to talk with. After awhile I realized everyone knows everyone lol. I sure was saddened to learn of his passing.

But I have to admit, he has got what it takes. The rest of the Buffalo crew, are very special. Joe is a luck guy. Thanks for sharing a special adventure. form an avid fan in Quebec.

I'm so sad about this I want to cry Not only was he a great guy and a great pilot but what a legend. And I also want to cry that they're not taking everything that they can take from that wreckage put it together rebuild what they can and reuse what they can and restore that airplane just not to fly again but just restore it so it's all put back together and that should be his memorial and if anybody needs help I just live right here in Vermont I'm not too far away from where you guys are really Burlington Vermont I'd be more than willing to come over there and help recover all the pieces I'm a good swimmer that's only a few feet deep let's do this let me know and if you guys want to do in the winter time that'd be even easier we can cut it up with chainsaws the ice I mean so let me know
@LooseFrait
@LooseFrait 2 жыл бұрын
that plane will most likely never fly again, it is way too far gone, it was too far gone right after it crashed... and it is really too far-gone 40 years later, it would cost 7x the amount to restore it, then to buy the same model plane in decent shape, and even after it is "Restored." 85% of the metal won't be original due to airplane regulations and general stress on the components and metal.

This is a good show, but I love how ever reality show exaggerates everything. They are flying TWIN engine SEA planes. Sea planes! With enough cargo to bring extra fuel if needed. Granted, the Atlantic is no joke, but to say there is no place to land a SEA plane. HMMMM the Sea? There is no doubt that there is danger, and my hat goes off to them, but you gotta love the music and drama. Try flying a regular single engine aircraft over the Atlantic with truly no place to land.

Not having radio communication with helicopter pilot would be unthinkable. Surly somebody from ground crew was communicating with the helicopter pilot.
@mhale71
@mhale71 Жыл бұрын
You use hand signals, and the ground crew here were using completely wrong ones, pointing with your finger up or down is not legible at all from 150 feet up.. they are supposed to spin their hand in a circle pointing upward to signal up, and swipe their palm back and forth above their head for down, and hold their arm out straight for steady.. AND it's still prudent to have ground grew wearing a headset/radio with comms to the pilot... . What a gong show
@Mike-ei9ip
@Mike-ei9ip Жыл бұрын
@@mhale71 I started flying in 1970 and at that time most aviation com radios operated on vacuum tubes handheld radios for aviation was something we did not even dream about. Today I would not even go on a local flight without a handheld radio and extra batteries. In the US Army, we had a "portable radio" in the 70s a really big radio and we used it in a few situations to pick up cargo with helicopters. Hand signals are really inadequate, especially in a dusty environment with bigger helicopters.

Overly dramatic made for TV nonesense. Saying that a surval suit is all that will keep them alive in case they have to ditch is rubbish. They are in a float plane and most competent pilots will attempt a landing unless the plane is on fire. IF they fall out of the sky then even that suit wont save them as they hit the water at 600 mph.
