It’s ridiculous that the city fire dept has to go through this nonsense. Proper Planing Prevents Piss Poor Performance. Concentrating on the politics doesn’t work well in the fire service anywhere at anytime. The people and your firefighters are your priority not your wallet !

Empty wallets don't give. Drive around Buff before you throw in revolutionary ideas. Same in Cleveland, Toledo, Detroit, Milwaukee. Poor tax base = few funds for public service upgrades. These cities are surviving but it's a struggle.

As a retired Volunteer Fire Captain; follow the union's advice! Poor user level management can put lives at risk & endanger the whole community! Don't let the insurance carrier find out a truck with a cracked frame,they won't insure it! Even if it is welded by a certified auto dealer welder! 10 & 15 yr old trucks can be taken out of service & refurbished in less than a year,but make sure it's done by a certified company that can put an extended warranty on equipment that was repaired! Firefighters deserve the best equipment, because their lives depend on it! Commisioners & executive officers that don't put their Firefighters safety & truck performance as a 1st priority should retire!

Unions are part of the problem. The are so corrupt. Get on a schedule. But also good preventative maintenance also helps. Granted I’ve only been on the EMS side.

Buffalo is probably self insured as are most large cities. The tax base is poor in the city. I'm sure the council would like to vote more funds for the FD but they have many demands & not nearly enough funds. This is not usual around the Great Lakes, aka, the Rust Belt. Old wooden structures built closely together for economy, old water system, an overstretched fire service with worn out apparatus & insufficient staffing. Common enough problems these days but probably worse in Buffalo than many towns with the likely exception of Detroit. The fix: Massive infusions for money to replace & repair the infrastructure & municipal services. The union is probably not exaggerating. The answer is not in their gift.

its a sad story. Valenter companies have better eqipment then the city. Dunkirk ny just replaced there ladder truck with a tower truck able to reach the upper floors of Dunkirk highrise. New ambulance. Village of fredonia has a really nice newer fleet. just wait kama will come back and hit

A bond is a one-time fix but Buffalo's credit rating will not get favorable rates so they'd get saddled with more heavy debt. They need a longer term plan. They bit the bullet in England & based almost all fire services at the county level. Only the largest cities, like London & Manchester, have their own fire services. Also, Scotland & New Zealand each have one fire-rescue service for their entire respective countries. The challenges, especially costs & recruitment/retention, of managing fire services are becoming too enormous for many municipalities to meet.

It doesn't help the situation that it appears that many of the rigs were made by American LaFrance who, in its later years, had a reputation for building defective rigs.

BFD bought them because AFL had a factory in their area. The moved to South Carolina then folded a few years later.

What happened after one mouth? Just curious. And of course you are aware it takes about a year to get a new apparatus from the time it's ordered. That doesn't include the time to get the project funded. A decent engine is ~$600,000. A decent aerial is often twice as much.

Keep salting the roads to rot the trucks... Raise taxes.... Buy more trucks...spread more salt ...rot more trucks. .Florida does not have that problem ...

Do you really want to start comparing Florida's problems with NY's? That'll be interesting. FYI, fire apparatus are generally hosed off after a run when there's snow, salt or grit on the roads.
