Man there just isn't anything like the steam piston engine. They huff and puff or just quietly do their thing. Here in the States we display our steam traction engines working for all they're worth. Running saw mills ploughing fields pulling twelve to thirty or more bottoms threshing grain shocking grain shucking corn grinding corn pushing buzz saws and on and on. And over in Europe they have showman traction engines with the built-in dynamos lighting them up at night and running caliapies excuse my spelling. If you've never heard of him look up Fred Dibnah that's one interesting dude I got hooked and so did the English. GOD bless!

Surprisingly quiet machine!

This looks a lot like the engine that was sold at Alan Schurmans first auction and went over to the Oregon Coast. If so, one of the first engines I ever ran, very easy to single hand. If it is that engine, I know a bit more of its history, it’s an original engine to the Willamette valley.

My son and I purchased it from Wayne Thackery in Keizer, OR, just north of Salem. It's still at Wayne's place, however my son has secured a spot adjacent to Antique Powerland in Brooks, where it will be displayed and run. We live in the Seattle area, I've taken my son to Brooks most every summer since he was a toddler.

you didn't need to put new boiler tubes in?? how can you be sure they are in good condition?? I understand way the pressure test, I assume the boiler was thickness inspected electrically!?
@jeffmaier12 жыл бұрын
It does need a new tube, and needs a full boiler inspection before public exhibition.
@AHMW55412 жыл бұрын
It had brand new tubes installed before this video was filmed, one of those tubes leaks so that will need to be replaced before show season.

1. The hydrostatic pressure test performed in this video is, per Oregon law, performed to 1.5 times the expected operating pressure. It held, and was determined safe to run. 2. The boiler had brand new tubes installed before operation. 3. This was not run for public display, all risk was solely upon all who were present that day, myself included. 4. Nowhere did anyone in the video advocate for or recommend any of the actions taken. Any activity with steam engines should be taken at one's own risk.

These early traction engines are neat to see. That flared stack is unique. What working pressure are your shooting for? Happy steaming

If we operate it in OR, where it is presently residing, the boiler inspector will issue a certificate to 100psi or less, depending on boiler condition.

Young people will never understand the power of steam!! Most traction engines were about 6--8hp. Steam hp needs to be multiplied x9?? Steam hp is measured differently to modern engines. Plus traction engines have enormous torque. It is not uncommon to see them pulling 2 or 3 trailers without a care in the world!!
@jeffmaier12 жыл бұрын
Yup, low speed, all torque. I've seen traction engines doing a pull. Typically they pull the sled all the way, the engine just chuffs along. The IC tractors bog down towards the end. My son (now 32) and I bought the engine, so there is at least 1 young person who understand the power of steam!
@sigmawarrior.fokeryou2 жыл бұрын
Power equals torque times angular speed. It's the same formula for any machine that is working. ANY machine can do the same job, but the one with more power will do it faster.

We had some! Only about 20lb; but it went in the firebox. We found a place not too far away that will fill the bed of your truck or trailer with bituminous. Would be REALLY nice if Anthracite was available. Historically, here in the Pacific Northwest, wood was used as it was the most plentiful.
