Cowhers teams were fun to watch. They were always physical and fought hard.
@davidroberts728211 ай бұрын
The sad, unfortunate thing is before Big Ben's arrival, the best QB Cowher had to rely upon and succeeded with the most was "Slash", Kordell Stewart. That's the one, big critical factor if you examine all those very good, 1990's Cowher Steelers teams, including the 1995 squad, they were missing that top 5-10 Pro-Bowl QB that could make things happen. I'm not a Steelers fan (Saints fan), but as an historian, I suppose in retrospect, once Big Ben had come in and achieved the bulk of his HOF-CALIBER career level success, it becomes obvious and clearer that what Cowher's teams from the 1990's was that extra 10-15% of greatness, achievement that a perennial Pro-Bowl QB brings to a contending team come January. It wasn't that Pittsburgh lacked great defensive players, future HOF RB's, WR's, Pro Bowl TE's, HOF O-lineman, they just didnt have that MVP-CALIBER QB.
@nick566773 ай бұрын
@@davidroberts7282I've said it for years as well. Cowher never had a franchise qb until his last 3 seasons. He couldn't get over the hump and win the big one until he got a franchise qb to complete his team. Same could be said for almost every team.

@@ST0NE_206 If O'Donnell doesn't throw those picks the Steelers win the game, without a doubt in my mind. Both picks to Larry Brown put the Cowboys in the red zone and gave them 14 points for free. People forget Cowher tried a surprise onside kick during the 4th quarter that actually worked, it led to a Steelers touchdown. On their next drive, the Steelers had the ball down by 3 with a chance to tie with a field goal or take the lead for the first time all game with another touchdown. Unfortunately O'Donnell's second interception gave the Cowboys 1st and goal and then another Emmitt Smith touchdown to put them up by 10. The Steelers held up much better against the Cowboys in the Super Bowl than either time the Bills faced them earlier that decade. It's just a fascinating scenario to think about.

I think Big Ben did a lot more to help Steelers win far more convincingly, and consistently throughout his 18-year career then a QB like Neil O'Donnell who, in reality was maybe a few steps above being a really good, meddling average QB. Roethlisberger never had a losing season as Pittsburgh's QB in his two decade-long QB, he took the Steelers to three SB's, won two of them, may have appeared in and more SB's if it wasnt right in the middle of New England's legendary Dynasty teams. Ben is the franchise's all-time winniest QB, has the most career passing yards, TD's, every major statistical category, except SB wins, he's better then Terry Bradshaw. IMHO, Ben is probably the best QB in Steelers history. He had good defenses throughout most of his career, but lets face it, Big Ben didnt have HOF-caliber players at nearly every position that Terry had with those great, "Steel Curtain" defenses of the 1970's and early 80's.
