You guys probably missed the fact that the guy at 2:49 with the 'beard' as Lex calls it was Neil Young, who I believe you've reacted to as a solo artist. Both he and the lead singer, Stephen Stills, show up together later in Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young alongside David Crosby of The Byrds and Graham Nash of The Hollies.

Although "For What It's Worth" is often considered an anti-war song, Stephen Stills was inspired to write the song because of the Sunset Strip curfew riots in Los Angeles in November 1966-a series of early counterculture-era clashes that took place between police and young people on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood,

Is is just me or do most singers and groups in the last 8 years or so sound the same! So much is "missing" of being unique, like what happened to being original and unique? Then they add all this auto tune and it's very sad, it seems music now has lost soul and depth.

I never realized, until I started watching Brad&Lex’ videos, how important the historical context is to understand some of the songs of “our” era (60s & 70s). I always thought the message of these songs was timeless. But I see these 2 young people ask “so what’s this song about?”, and then struggle with the meaning, because they weren’t there with us in that era, two generations ago.

Titles and names are important. They are usually the only thing most people know. Had this essential anthem of the time been called "Stop, Children" or "What's Going Down" or anything from the song, it would be far higher up in the charts today. But most people do no remember anything about "For What It's Worth", as it is never in the song. Nor was "scrambled eggs" in "Yesterday". Anyways...thank you. Loved it. An essential for the collection. BTW, that was Steven Stills as main singer/guitarist, and Neil Young with the huge sideburns of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. In fact, in retrospect, one may also assume that "Stills & Young" might have them higher up the charts than "Buffalo Springfield".

This song got its title by accident. He cut the track on a 45. It got dropped at a radio station. The paper jacket said this is the new Buffalo Springfield song. for what its worth. Meaning for what it's worth not actually the title of the song. The real title was supposed to be What's that sound. The DJ played it and just read the jacket. And introduced it as For What it's Worth as the title. From then on that's what it was called.

There is an interesting article on Wikipedia about this song and its origins and what it means et cetera et cetera you can be there in seconds. It was released in 1967 and Buffalo Springfield were a Canadian/ American band it went to number seven on billboard hot hundred. It’s now considered a classic of the 60s When young people thought the world was going to change for the better. When you look around now it’s very sad that things are much the same as they ever were. Except in my opinion the music scene has really gone down the tubes. I am so glad I grew up in the 50s and 60s even though there were many bad things happening the music was wonderful

The lead singer, Stephen Stills, and one of the other members (you see him at the 2:50 mark of this video with the dark hair and the long sideburns), Neil Young, would later be in one of the greatest supergroups of all time, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young (with David Crosby and Graham Nash). You definitely should find some of their music, like "Woodstock" or "Ohio," a song written in response to the massacre by police of students at Ohio State University. Some of the most important music of the late '60s/early '70s came from that group. Also, before Neil Young joined them, the album by Crosby, Stills and Nash is one of the most greatest albums of the rock era, and is chocked full of some of the best recordings ever laid down on tape. Listen to "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" and "Marrakesh Express" for starters. And frankly, though it wasn't a single, two of the most beautiful songs of all time are on that album, "Lady of the Island" and "Wooden Ships." No one in history made harmonies like CSN (and later, CSNY).

The guy with the "beard" as Lex said is Neil Young.

By 1966, some of the best folk and rock artists of the time were making their way to Los Angeles. As Steve Stills and Richie Furay were going down Sunset Blvd in a van, they passed Neil Young’s 1953 Pontiac hearse with Ontario license plates, and one of them said something like “There are your friends from Canada!” or “Hey, I know them!” And the rest was history. Not only would these guys form *Buffalo Springfield,* but after that group’s short but influential history, they would go on to contribute to some of the great rock bands to follow.

Curfew riots on the Sunset Strip. The Muppets did a great cover using their cast of wonders.

Whoever sampled this song for their artistic expression and wealth creation weren't around 50+ years ago when the Selective Service "sampled" us to supply cannon fodder for the Vietnam War.

Public Enemy sampled it for He Got Game. And the same singer, Stephen Stills, performed on the sample.

"He Got Game"....sampled by Flavor Flav... Rarely are remakes as good as the original but this Public Enemy rendition is off the hook. Flavor Flav's message at the end is universal.

This was sampled for a Public Enemy song, on the "He Got Game" soundtrack.

1:22: My guess for where you heard this before is "He Got Game" by Public Enemy. Steven Stills of Buffalo Springfield provided the guitar riff.

Just about any movie or show dealing with Vietnam (and the 60s during that time) plays this song. Idk if it was sampled (wouldn't surprise me), but if you've seen anything about the Vietnam war, you've probably heard parts of this song.
