"Expecting to Fly" from Neil is pure bliss in a song. What a great album.

This is a Neil Young composition, and his lead vocals and guitar work, without a doubt. Neil STILL performs "Mr. Soul" at his concerts. Happy New Year everybody!

Many live versions of this great NY song out there…my favorite is the rather haunting MTV Unplugged one.

Neil is just a fountain of flowing talent that just never stops giving. He always played what he wanted and didn't worry about what people thought.

You get multiple "sounds" from Buffalo Springfield due to several very talented members of the band.

Buffalo Springfield wasn't around very long but spawned a number of other bands... Stephen Stills Manassas, Crosby Stills Nash (and Young) Neal Young and Crazy Horse, Poco (Richie Furay and Jim Messina) and Loggins and Messina.

I was hoping you'd react to Mr Soul, which was one of Neil Young's strongest songs written during the Buffalo Springfield years. Most of the best of Buffalo Springfield's songs were Stephen Stills compositions, beginning with Bluebird, but also *Rock & Roll Woman* (written about Grace Slick) was exceptional. Add to that *Questions* and *Go And Say Goodbye* which I think are must-listen Stephen Stills songs during the Buffalo Springfield era. Check them out!

FYI, his near-death experience had nothing to do with the lyrics in this song, except the coincidence re: when he wrote it. What the lyrics are _clearly_ about is Neil's encounter with a groupie, which they were encountering a lot more often those days, now that Buffalo Springfield had gained some fame in California. He speaks of surprise at how his "head" (double-entendre) was now the focus of attraction to these women. The groupies were famous for offering oral sex to rock stars to show their appreciation for their talent. He was "raised (wink, wink) by the praise of a fan" When he started talking around his misgivings about what she was clearly interested in, she said "you're strange, but don't change *so I let her."* After he let her, he started to have regrets almost immediately, his smile quickly disappearing. He asks, "is it strange I should change I don't know, why don't you ask her..." which clearly meant he knows she's done this kind of thing many times before, so she ought to be able to tell you how strange it is or isn't. Masking sexual references behind double-meaning references was common back then in the mid-late 1960's, with the Beatles leading the way during that period. (By the way, the Beatles first big hit, *Please Please Me* was also about oral sex where Lennon asks his girl to do the same favor to him that he had done for her)

If you're interested in the other end of the Neil spectrum I definitely recommend Expecting to Fly. This he also did with Buffalo Springfield. Quite possibly his most beautiful song. ✌️

On the Way Home and Rock & Roll Woman are two more great songs to check out. Buffalo Springfield was so much more prevalent in Southern California than in the rest of the U.S. it seems to me. I lived in there in the 60's and early 70's and the top 40 charts were always filled with Buffalo Springfield songs. When I moved to Indiana in the mid-70's, though I hung with a Rock crowd, the only song from Buffalo Springfield they had heard was For What It's Worth. Luckily, I had some albums to educate them.

That's awesome. I love sharing music with friends and fam. I'm way into this band. Also Shawn check out the Monterey Pop fest '67 on KZbin. Full documentary is on here, in individual song clips. BS, Byrds, Joplin, Simon & Garfunkel, Hendrix, the Who, Otis Redding, Hugh Masakela, Ravi Shankar✌️♥️🎤🎸🕊️

Neil was never much of a druggie. He reportedly used to ask "is this hard grass?" before accepting a joint. These are really some of the most ponderable lyrics he ever wrote.

The name Buffalo Springfield came from a company in Springfield, Ohio that manufactured rollers for asphalt road construction. A roller was parked outside music producer Barry Friedman’s house in LA, where Richie Furay and Stephen Stills were staying in 1966. They were looking for a name for the band and saw the nameplate on the machine. The rest is history.

You can hear Stephen Stills on the other guitar and backing vocals. Supposedly he and Neil were very competitive even onstage, each turning up his amp to drown out the other.

after playing this song on the radio a local DJ said it best Neil Young all the way on that one. This was a fun one Shawn, we told you, that you would like. It's fun to watch the smile come across you face when you realize a song is going to kick it

At the Monterey Pop Festival, this group performed and joining them was David Crosby - so Crosby Stills and Young worked together before CS&N formed and went to Woodstock

Sounds better in mono. The extreme stereo separation hinders rather than helps the song. It sounded so much better live. Neil said he and Peter Lewis from Moby Grape both wanted to write a song with a riff similar to Day Tripper by The Beatles. Peter wrote Fall On You while Neil wrote Mr. Soul.

Thanks I wouldn't have remembered this one if not for your reaction video. At the time, when it was a current song, I'm sure I had no idea it was Neil Young, just someone with a very interesting/compelling song and voice (and guitar). Obviously an important tune. :)
