I'm always impressed with the clarity of Neil Young's diction in his songs, even those recorded when he was clearly chemically enhanced. The words are almost always clear. As well as the outstanding musicianship, cool presence and overall NY amazingness of course.

Neil's guitar in this song has a unique tone because it is a singularly unique guitar. Old Black has been heavily modified over the years to the point where no other guitar sounds quite like it - that modified Gibson Les Paul has it's own Wikipedia entry. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Black

Thank you for this request Lance. I love just about everything Neil Young has done. His voice is so unique and amazing. In her musical memoir, Linda Ronstadt (who toured with Neil in the 70’s) described his voice as an “eerie, prairie-wind howl of a voice ~ a boy soprano fuel-injected with testosterone…an enduring pleasure”. I love that description. A wonderful song and great commentary by Harri 🌺✌️

When I was a teenager, I went to a lot of live shows, lots of concerts by popular artists. The average price for a ticket in 1977, for example, was $7.50 (I kept many of my ticket stubs). Adjusted for inflation, that would be $37.54 in today's money, according to Google. An upcoming Neil Young show at Berkeley's Greek Theatre costs $299 for "lawn seating". That is many times over what inflation would have done to those ticket prices. Ticketmaster has made it impossible for anyone but the rich, elite, exclusive and priviledged to attend live shows. Pity, that.

From Neil's 1977 album, "American Stars 'n Bars", this song was inspired by Del Shannon's "Runaway". Starting with a heavy a guitar riff, this includes Neil's trademark fierce guitars, with multi layered strings effects and delivery of a great melody with his so recognizable vocals. I think he's saying that she is the calm in the center of his hurricane and keeps him stable. Such a great song. After his 1975 album, "Crazy Horse" Neil wrote some of his finest rock songs. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Lance. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

The version to hear is the original studio one. He wrote it and played it with not being able to sing (due to a throat aliment. The studio version, first heard on "American Stars and Bars", was a spontaneous cut after the end of the day. After two weeks of Pancho playing rhythm guitar , which didn't really gel. Pancho just started playing the chords on the nearby Stringman keyboard. Neil, and the other guys started playing along, the engineer hit the record button and the rest is history. Vocals were added later. I wish that a version without the vocals was released, just to get hear it. That spontaneous version, was what Neil couldn't do, 'cause Poncho's guitar, left Neil no room to soar.
