Very few Westerns made till date deal with the free buffalo migration and hunting days. This movie does this and does it rather well with thundering buffalo herds and very close look at buffalo hunters' camps and outfits. This is a chapter of American history that has few pages with buffalos being the doomed heroes of the American prairies whose place were soon taken by cattle from Texas and Mexico. Hooray for the simple but well-made Western.

The killing of the buffalo (bison) was to eliminate one of the main food sources of the plains Indians and the full use of the rest of the buffalo for their lifestyle. The taking of the hides was to cover up the true reason for the killing of the buffalo. Easterners and Europeans found the hides useful for coats and other things.
