@@theyardfreako Yes I still love it and am pretty much obsessed with it. We're in the middle of a drought here with like a month straight of 100+ degree days, but I'm keeping it alive and looking half way decent.
@dfwguy7149 Жыл бұрын
you have some shade trees, is that affecting growth? I have a really high trimmed tree that gives dappled shade mid day, hoping that will not hurt growth. full morning sun and after 2pm. I got the 609 variety full sod here in Arlington TX.

$70 for 70 plugs currently which comes to $400-1000 per 1000 sq fr depending on 18”or 12” spacing. I’ve never had luck germinating Buffalo seed, but I also haven’t completely removed the previous lawn and prepared the soil. (That makes me nervous.)
@theyardfreako Жыл бұрын
It’s a little spendy, but like you said make sure you take the time to properly prep the lawn before install and I’m sure you’ll have a great experience establishing the grass.

@@theyardfreako are you replacing Bermuda with Buffalo? Have you been able to tell tell between the two growing together or have you been fortunate enough to have completely wiped out your Bermuda?
@colinrice6865 Жыл бұрын
Colin from Chicago,IL/Dowagiac ,MI. Great stuff. Do you think I messed up if I just got the species? I am planting in Dowagiac and I am planning on doing Buffalo Grass, and two of it’s siblings Blue Grama and sideoates Grama for a oak bluff.
@theyardfreako Жыл бұрын
They are all complimentary grasses, and if you mow them I doubt it’d mess with the aesthetic. Kinda like mixing fescue and Kentucky bluegrass

What variety do you use? Sundancer? If so..the only difference between the other varieties is sundancer has male plants? Or are there more differences?
@theyardfreako6 ай бұрын
Unless you get plugs or sod, all seeded varieties of buffalograss come with male plants.
@ShinerBockGirlz6 ай бұрын
@@theyardfreako so they are essentially the same look wise. Except subdancer has the male heads. I don’t mind the look of the seed heads or whatever they are called. Thanks sweetheart.

Freako, Thanks for this. I am nearly two months into seeding 1600 sq fr with Sundancer. Weeds (esp purslane and yellow foxtail) have been a big problem, to say the least. Germination of Sundancer has been strong, but am concerned about the weeds choking out the seedlings. Am considering exploratory spraying of Triclopyr in small patches to get the purslane. Reaction? Recommendation? Some sections of the seeded area have germinated more than others and am considering plugs to fill the bare spots. I recall you seeded with Sundancer (as I did). I can’t find Sundancer plugs or sod available commercially. Would plugging with Legacy or another variety make my (eventual) lawn look “patchy?”
@theyardfreako2 жыл бұрын
I had the same problem with spurge, which is a similar type of annual weed to purslane. I was worried about harming the young buffalograss and stunting it's growth, so I didn't use any herbicides the year I established it. Since purslane and foxtail are annuals, I'd leave the yard alone this year, and let the winter frost kill off weeds. If you have huge spots (two feet in diameter) of weeds go ahead and take that spot out to allow the grass to move in. Next year when the grass is mature you can bust out the herbicides and take care of any residuals in the lawn. Good luck!

I’m at about the same spot as you, and have purslane, spurge, among others… I’ve been trying to hand pick the purslane and spurge- especially before mowing because that will spread it. For the leafy stuff, and if you have any crabgrass, quinclorac works great and has not damaged the grass at all even after two treatments. I have some 2,4D that I’m gonna put down eventually on the purslane and spurge.

Why not make your own buffalo grass plugs with seeds? This is for people who don't have Buffalo grass establishe in there backyard.

I mean if you have seeds why not just sow them? What I was getting at was a way to not have to spend more money to expand the lawn

@@theyardfreakoI just started to see if I can grow a patch with seeds and it’s not going well. It’s been two days and I am not home enough to keep it from drying even though I covered with a winter protection tarp so maybe I should try something more hardcore. Seems like it might be easier to keep indoor grown plugs watered better.
