This lake effect dump happened a few times to me when I lived south of Buffalo in the '60's. It's fun to have school closed. Our family didn't have a snowblower, but our dad did call my brother and me his "human snowblowers"! We had a long driveway AND it was expected of us to do some clearing for our elderly neighbors. Good times.

A little older than you and we never had a snowblower either. When my parents built a new house in the early 70s he called me and my friends his Bobcats as the 4 of us could move dump truck of sand or gravel and spread it in the basement in about 45 minutes. Amazing the power of 17year olds competing against each other! Our drive was 1/4 mile long so we had a tractor! Steps and walks had to be done before anyone (dad) walked on them and as the drive was steep, it had to be done before Amoy left for school or work.

Your Dad sounds a lot like mine. I was the snow blower, lawn mower, car detailer, garage cleaner, pool boy, and garbage man. I also ran security for my older and younger sisters. My father's insistence that I not sit on my ass all day and put in work to help the family has made me appreciate all that I have in life because I worked hard for it.

A few years back I went to Detroit at Christmas from Heathrow. Bad weather was forecast so we went down the day before and stayed in a hotel by the airport. Just as well, when we got up the following day the M4 was shut, the airport was a mess with people milling about and everything was showing as delayed. Travel to the airport was so bad a lot of staff and crew just hadn’t made it in. There was a tunnel from the hotel into departures so while my girlfriend had breakfast I went in to find out any news about our flight. While I was there the tannoy unexpectedly called our flight, so I ran back and got our stuff and we ran for it. They’d basically kidnapped any KLM crew that managed to make the airport and pushed them on the plane. The aircrew absolutely loved it! They were taking selfies and having a great time, unexpected international flight! There was a load of de-icing and what seemed like two laps of the airport before we got away. If I remember rightly there was 6 inches of snow. We got to Detroit and they’d had exactly the same amount of snow. The difference was the whole area was operating normally, no disruption, freeways open and running (with COLOSSAL amounts of really chunky salt) and just an everyday “oh its a bit snowy” feel to it all.

Man-made or better known as anthropogenic climate change, is increasing the extreme climactic events on planet Earth. A city or a region can experience record snow simply because if it wasn't snow it would be record flooding. If this was Australia you would probably see 20 to 30 ft of snow in one snow dump. Australia is seeing some of the largest and most frequent flooding events in its history. I looked at the history of Australian floods at Wikipedia. Looking back 120 years, I would study the yearly frequency of floods and how many years were floods did not exist between the next flood cycle. Early 1900s it was one flood every four or five years it started to accelerate a little bit in the 80s and 90s and then starting in the late 1990s all the way through the 2000s the floods were increasing exponentially by one extra flood per year. It looks like a hockey stick if you're a draw a graph and the total flood events. This year alone the country has seen four record flooding events. It's really getting really scary for the country it's not just Australia it's all countries that line the edge of the Indian Ocean. Climate change is causing record flooding events. Is causing record heat waves it's causing record drought all at the same time. Humans are 100% responsible for these extreme events. Carbon dioxide and methane are the leading causes of climate change. Humans burn coal oil and natural gas and release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. 54 billion tons of carbon dioxide are released by billions of humans every year. CO2 can stay in the atmosphere for up to 300 years before it's finally reabsorbed by plant life in the ocean or on land. The Middle East can see temperatures as high as 140° out in the sun. Slightly less in the shade.

These types of blizzards were common in Maine. I still remember our ice storm of 98' too. Mainers were typically seen driving 4WD and we knew to be stocked up with batteries, alternative heat (woodstoves) or a generator. I lived off grid for two years through two separate winters, and was pregnant for nine months of the second yr. These kinds of extreme weather conditions were just another day to us growing up. Now one inch of snow and the whole state shuts down. Crazy.

I want to explain to you that climate change which is caused by humans burning coil and natural gas and releasing tens of billions of tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year is overheating planet Earth. The effects are increased intense snow storms and they might be slightly warmer than past decades. Increased and more dangerous droughts that last longer. Right now there's a record drought and the desert Southwest including the Mississippi River and the Colorado River. A whole long list of rivers in southern Europe including Asia are critically low

Yes, they're trying to get ahead of it, or at least lessen the amount they have to clear when the snow dump finally finishes. I do this all the time, especially when an all day and/or night snow dump is forecast. Even if it's inconvenient, biting away smaller chunks is easier than handling a huge amount at the end, especially when you don't have a snowblower and you have to shovel. As a kids in Eastern Ontario in the 80s, we once had so many continuous days of heavy snowfall that many people were jumping off the roofs for "fun".

In Vermont I shovel during the storms. Every few hours at least. I'm always puzzled when people don't stay ahead of the snow and just wait until it's 4' deep and a monstrous task to remove. Wind can be a complicate the effort, for sure. But barring drifts staying ahead of the snowfall is easy.

Yeah a warming Planet will also in cause increased substantial snowfall. The Great Lakes were three degrees warmer than normal. In the scientific atmospheric community the general consensus is that for everyone degree increase of sea surface temperatures will evaporate 7% more moisture into the atmosphere. The Great Lakes were three degrees warmer so this means there was a 21% increase in the amount of water vapor being pushed into the atmosphere. Because the winds were parallel to the length of the axis of the lake this person received probably a good 80% more snow than normal.

I have NO IDEA why anyone would ever live in Buffalo. They seem to get more life-stopping blizzards than anywhere in the country, on top of endless drear half the year, a grimey downtown with old filth-stained buildings, no mountains, 6 or 7 hours to the ocean, etc etc. Those born in Buffalo who stay there are a case of Stockholm Syndrome at its best.
