"Fine, that's easy." That scene is such a spot-on portrayal of addiction. An addict is at their most dangerous when they think they're in control.

So far they're the only LGBT couple representation on screen I love as a bisexual of the community. Due to the fact that they're the only gay couple on TV that I've seen treated normally like a straight couple and not written sexually or as blunt stereotypes. They're also realistic and natural in they're acting which gives them chemistry that you can not only see but feel and get attached to,

Totally agree with you. All other LGBT relationships I've seen in entertainment media exist only so the shows can boast they have LGBT characters in LGBT relationships, and that's it. But Willow/Tara is written in a natural and realistic way, and I love the pairing completely.

> I've seen treated normally like a straight couple and not written sexually or as blunt stereotypes. Does Willow's date with Kennedy fall under the "blunt stereotypes" heading? Proportionally they send a fair bit of time talking specifically about their sexuality, and not that much talking about everything else that makes them who they are. I get that whole "look how lesbian they are" vibe from it. (I'm not a lesbian, being neither female nor homosexual, so I observe them from an outsider's perspective.) > not written sexually Xander's dream in Restless says hi. But I hear you. That was one exceptional scene.

Willow became intoxicated from the magick and, like a drunkard, had become dependent on it. It was when Xander had saved her (and the world) from "Dark Willow," that she felt the guilt of what she had done. Willow and Tara were my favorite though. Even after Tara died Willow was still my favorite character

It really comes across as insidiously manipulative whenever Willow does it. And it's even worse when you remember that Tara comes from an abusive and strict and controlling family of more outspoken people, probably prone to raising voices, so Willow deliberately targeting Tara's need for gentle handling while trying to gloss over her own wrongdoing is really sick.

Im probably clueless bc i dont have much relationship experience but i dont understand this trope in tv shows with couples when one is spiraling out of control the other leaves them “for their own good”. Why? Why would you abandon the one you love when they are at their worst and probably need you the most. I love tara she is maybe my favorite character but i just dont get why people do this. If someone i love is spiraling like this and destroying their life in some way the last thing i would wanna do is abandon them. again i dont have ton of relationship experience so maybe im naive but idk :/

This is actually a really great question! I see what you mean, it seems cold to leave someone at their lowest. But I think what’s important to keep in mind in situations like this is that there is a big difference between supporting someone through a hard time and letting someone drag you down with them. It’s always your responsibility to make sure you are taking care of yourself first, and if your partner’s choices or lifestyle are causing you suffering, then you shouldn’t stay. That’s not to say we should abandon each other every time things’s get tough, however, there is a difference between going through a hard time together, and supporting each other (for example, one of you had a big set back - lost a job, or a loved one, and are going to need time to grieve or get back on your feet) and one person taking advantage of the other (for example, Willow and Tara) Anyway, I hope that makes sense, sorry for the novel, this is just something I wish I knew when I was younger!

Tara left her because Willow violated her. It's that simple
@Celcey24
@Celcey24 3 жыл бұрын
TL;DR: Willow's actions are abusive, and no matter what, you cannot fix someone, not ever. Not because there's something "wrong" or "not good enough" about you, but because for someone to change they must be both willing and *actively trying* to change. Willow was neither, Tara was absolutely right to leave her. Never stay with someone who abuses you because "they're hurting too!" Their pain is *not* your responsibility; it's theirs. They need a therapist for that, not you. Jumping in a little bit late here, as another commenter made some really good points, but I wanted to add a few things. As the other commenter said, if your partner is hurting you, you have to take care of yourself first. Willow literally erased Tara's memory so she could pretend their fight never happened, a HUGE violation of trust. When Tara confronts her, Willow tries to downplay and justify her actions, instead of owning up to what she did wrong, apologizing, and changing her actions in the future. She tries to guilt Tara by saying she did it out of love and because she needs Tara. Really, she did it because it was easier and so she wouldn't have to face the consequences for her actions. Willow's actions *are* abusive, and you should NEVER stay in an abusive relationship because you think you can "fix" someone. Which leads me to the second reason Tara should leave: you *cannot* fix another person. You *cannot* make someone else change. Not a boy/girlfriend, not a parent, not a sibling, not a friend. The only thing you can do is offer support if they *want* to change, which Willow doesn't. Tara gives Willow a chance to prove herself, and Willow immediately blows that chance. Not only does she use magic, she purposely tries to do the exact thing she knows hurt Tara so much. Willow didn't care that she was hurting Tara, she just didn't want to face the consequences of what she had done to Tara. Everything that happens to Willow is a consequence of her own actions. Finally, let me repeat what I said above: Never stay with someone who abuses you because "they're hurting too!" Their pain is *not* your responsibility; it's theirs. That applies to everyone in life: family, friends, romances, even jobs. It can be hard to leave these people behind, but their personal problems are their responsibility to handle, not yours.

Willow abused Tara. Tara was trying to explain to Willow that her addiction to magic is getting out of control and Willow wasn't really understanding her, she didn't fully appreciate just how abusive her actions were. Tara wasn't giving up on her but she needed space, 1 week, to think on things. Time for Willow to show change and for Tara to heal, process what happened and space to think about the relationship/Willows addiction. That's what I got from the scene anyways. The scene after is when Tara leaves her, Willow mind wiped her a 2nd time and that was just too much, Tara had every right to leave her first time but chose to give her a chance. Willow has a problem she needs help with, but she wasn't ready to stop/get help because she was using magic to get away with her addiction in a vicious cycle. It gave Tara no option other than leaving because the hurt/abuse was too deep and she couldn't help, because Willow wasn't ready own up to her addiction and work on herself, by leaving it showed that Willow must make an effort to earn her trust back. Willow was struggling, but she doesn't get any excuse to abuse the people she loves, it's a good scene to show just how addiction changes a person and blinds them to the hurt they cause to loved ones, as sad as it is to see them break up :(

Great video! Thanks man/mam. Willow is my favorite character, but she was SO fucking shitty to Tara. I get the metaphor for addiction, but that does NOT excuse anything. Tara was raised to believe she was as fucking demon, and then Glory mind raped her. Willow was the one she trusted and loved the most, and in the end she betrayed her too. And then she died. Tara was the most beautiful and wonderfull character. Love Willow, but fuck her when it comes to treating your girl right.

@kelsiekirk69
@kelsiekirk69 3 жыл бұрын
They deserved each other, and helped each other with their magic. Willow got addicted, she didn't stop loving Tara. Selfishness isn't part of the addiction, the addiction takes over, and until something happens to make the person mentally decide to end the addiction (just like smoking), it continues. Kennedy wasn't a "shitty replacement", she was what Willow needed to start living fully again, and helped her overcome her fear of the dark magic, and become a goddess of magic. That wouldn't have happened if she was still holding on to Tara.

See i get the abuse and addiction thing but wats the point of having magic and being so stingy and squirimsh about using it . There are consequnces to it but come on live a little enjoy it just not to excess. Charmed use magic plenty of time for personal gain and got away with it so did the magicians dr strange harry potter ouat so why does she have to get burn for it espically small things like creating decorations.
@rwwilson21
@rwwilson21 6 жыл бұрын
I'm probably stating the obvious, but magic isn't the problem. It's the addiction. Magic is just the tool and in this season magic is the metaphor for drugs. So, in that case, willow might as well been addicted to Heroin, cocaine, or even meth. That is why Tara left her.
@kalijohnston561
@kalijohnston561 6 жыл бұрын
I think it was more about like solving every single problem with magic. Like once she started doing little thing it spiraled and when her and Tara had a conflict she immediately resorted to it. Like magic is great and its fine to mess around with it but it isnt some fix-all
@Blackdragon99omfg

Because different universes for one. Look how fast her stuff spiralled. She started casting ON people and screwing with the fabrication of reality. Stuff which in this world can destroy the soul, literally. She started manipulating people with her magic, which is a violation. Essentially rape, in Tara’s case.
@Nepthu
@Nepthu 4 жыл бұрын
The magic fight is similar to when couples fight about drinking. At first they both like to drink, but soon, one person ALWAYS thinks the other drinks to excess while they themselves are being responsible. It also happens with spending money in relationships.

I agree , except for the rape comment. It was NOT rape, it was not sexual violation, it was mental manipulation. Which goes on with most everyone, just not with magic.

While I admire the ambition of the metaphor, it didn't make sense to me that BtVS started off using magic as a cipher for homosexuality, then a season later for addiction--unless they meant for the addiction represented by magic to be sexual, which is too gross to bear thinking about. Overall, for me the choice muddied the waters of the plot and the characterisation too much. Respect if it worked for you, though.
