As much as I understand Buffy's frustration, I'm glad you recognize that she's not handling this well. We all love Buffy, but a lot of fans jump right into, 'They need to do what she says and step up!' rather than recognizing Buffy isn't leading effectively.
@RitsychServare3 жыл бұрын
It's true. Buffy can't lead effectively because it doesn't take one person. A leader requires its team of subordinates: her first, second and third in command. They always have a right hand with them to help them better delegate. SPOILERSSSSS S S S S S S S She can't lead this army of girls without her Scoobies to back her up. That's why in the last few episodes, they all started kicking her out of the house, throwing her under the bus 'cause they didn't agree with her but look how much they suffered. The Scoobies need to try and get themselves fully on board with Buffy just like they always do before but at this point, they're not and it's not Buffy's fault either.

I kind of see where Buffy is coming from. There close to the final battle. The first can just easily blend in with the group. Peer pressure is at a high. Could buffy handle it better of course, but i understand her frustration. Disappointed in the first backstory wish we could get more information. but good episode.

I understand why Buffy didn't take the extra power, even though afterward she regretted it. She literally, in this episode, finds out where her power comes from. This tale of how the powers came to the first Slayer, she is hearing for the first time. It wasn't a choice, just like she didn't get the choice to become a Slayer in the first place. Its a big sore point with Buffy and she reacted badly. Not only did she find out how the Slayers got their power, but she also finds out what that power is... part demon. She has something inside of her that she has been told all these years that it was her job to fight, and yet it's that which gives her her power. She has always felt different and separated from those around her and she always felt better than them in a way, and it's most likely a lot of that comes with the demon power imbued in the Slayers. She has been taunted before about having a darkness in her, Faith fed into it while Buffy has fought against it. This revelation for her is big and it comes at one of the worst times. She has always been a loner when it comes to slaying and would be socially if it weren't for Xander & Willow. She's now charged with leading, which isn't in her job description, and trying her best but she can only do so much and it can be overwhelming. In the case of someone like Anya, I get why Buffy gets frustrated with her because she generally is just on the sidelines. She hasn't known where to fit since she became human again and now it's happened once again. And yet she is always super vocal and willing to criticise constantly. That would be so stressful to someone who's trying to lead people to have that constant naysayer in the group. Anytime Anya actually does stand up Buffy does recognise that, it's just not often.
@RitsychServare3 жыл бұрын
That is my biggest gripe about Anya and the Scoobies. They're part of this team but they're not united. Clearly, Buffy NEEDS her friends, her team, in order for her to achieve her mission against evil. It's always been this way and now that they're at the point Buffy has to lead these girls, they starting running scared and being overly critical. They know they can't function without Buffy and Buffy knows well that she'll need more assistance from Willow, Xander, Giles, and Spike (and even Anya once she gets her act together 🙄). It's just stupid that they leave her in that position where they're also unsure where to stand knowing that they're fighting a war, like they're about to face another apocalypse, so they need to be more prepared, not looking to find a date, etc. The more helpful thing that Buffy could do was before she does her power speech, she had talked it out with her Scoobies so that they could back her up and make it more of a Team effort and not just her standing alone telling everyone to pick up the slack. Leaders always have their assistants to call on so that they're more secured in their positions. Buffy, lacking support and getting criticized by her team, just doesn't make her look good, and this is where the writing in this season falls short. Filler episodes like the last one just didn't help.

@@RitsychServare I agree... to a certain point 😊 The letterman jacket episode was definitely one I could have gone without. I do think the previous episode had some important ground to cover in certain areas, and I think the dates element was generally so Giles could have his telling off moment at the end. I do think that some of season 7 needs those funny moments and, taking this episode for example, it really doesn't bother me when Xander is joking around as we need that comedic relief in a series covering the greatest evil & end of the world. If we didn't have those moments this would be one heavy final series and picking out Xander in particular, humour is his defense mechanism when he's in any uncomfortable situation. I've said this before, he wants to make people happy but he doesn't know how to go about it in the right way. I definitely feel like the explosion we got in this episode from Buffy was led by Giles in the previous episode. I think that they're all a little lost at this point, they've faced the end of the world before, this is just an unknown to them.

The first slayer was just a normal human girl when the Shadow Men forced the demon essence inside her. She couldn't fight it. Buffy could because she has power. Accepting more of the demonic essence would have cost Buffy her humanity -- something that's always been precious to her. She made the right choice. The Shadow Men were selfish and weak and saw women as disposable. This season is very much about fighting fear, hate, prejudice, and misogyny.
@salexo93 жыл бұрын
A lot of the last seasons themes are inspired by discussion points in intersectional feminism. When Buffy chews the others out, claiming they don't use their power, all the while forgetting that they don't have HER physical strength and experience, it is very reminiscent of middle class white women berating women of lower economic status or minority groups for not making it as well, forgetting they're at a different starting point. THAT was a looong sentence...
@9ansean3 жыл бұрын
Anyway whether not approve of Buffy's speech I really liked what Mackenzie says about what bravery is. Yes that all have to be prepared to die, but that doesn't means losing all fear. It's mean knowing there is something so important happening that you're ready to keep going and face what you fear. It reminds me of that episode of DS9 To the Death. When the guy in charges is the Jem-Hadar says they make perfect soldiers because they live only to serve, with no fear of death and minds geared only for battle (under the influence of drugs btw), Ben Sisko says from my experience a healthy fear of death can leave a mind ready for battle. We may call Daredevil the Man Without Fear., but that only means a hero is willing to face fear and not run from it. If you fear don't anything at all, you're not invested in saving who and what could otherwise be lost. Having something to die for means little if you don't believe there's still something to live for.

The first time I watched this, after the vision Buffy saw was shown, I was like "oh, maybe this time they're not gonna win". I got chills. Things were serious already, but they got extreme. xD And yep, this episode didn't seem to have many scenes that moved the plot, but it was still good. And the way they all handled the situation (Buffy's leadership, their losses, their lack of answers) was awful but expected I guess. I mean awful in the way that it hurt, not that it was poorly written, if that makes sense. xD

Another great reaction video, you guys, as we near the end (!). I'm among the probably many joining Kyle in agreeing with Mackenzie that Buffy's speech was not the way to go. (I've always felt she was - if not traumatized, then something approaching it - by having to physically bury Chloe, another young woman - girl, really - sent to her whom she couldn't save; but, the attacking tone was still too much, too harmful.) I do love Mackenzie's taking offense on behalf of Anya and the way she's been treated. It was unfortunate on both sides - I never liked Anya's "I'm not!" from the very first time I heard it. (Guys, what about the conversation during attempted stain removal - just last week?) But, she has been underappreciated and even mistreated by various parts of the group as she's contributed more and more, to saving the world, even. One thing I didn't notice being brought up much is what a - well, ass - Kennedy often is in this episode.... But, lots of good insights - along with some solid and clearly sincere information about depression treatment and suicide prevention.

As Kyle and Mckenzie point out towards the end of this video, Buffy wasn't given the choice to accept that extra power. The Shadowmen were trying to force that on her.

Everyone else who had to step up this episode (Dawn with the translation, Spike getting back to being the Big Bad of old, Willow pushing past her limits to create the portal) made the choice to do better and get it done. Buffy, meanwhile, was knockout and chained up while the Shadowmen summoned the essence of a demon and tried to force it inside her. That's very much NOT a choice. The fact that she intimidated one of them into giving her information, however, WAS a choice.

I will defend Buffy Ann Summer and her speech to the ground units. Because it was brilliant!!! Buffy "Declared War" in an earlier episode, and a speech to "Civilians" is a bit different then the one you give to the "Troops". At a time of War, you have to assess your troops strengths and weaknesses, you then have to set a standard, because you are going to lose lives and the goal is to lost as few as possible. She was in a room of "Potential Slayers" and people who had signed up, they all had to either catch up or they were going to die or even worse get more people killed, because time on this War is running out. Think about the Xander's part, when Buffy was talking about being the Leader and he said .... "yes as in we follow" Buffy then said she wanted them to do something and Xander instead of doing as he said he would "follow", decide to question things and argue and make snide comments. They are in a time of War, you don't have time or the resources to question commands, those are the things that get you killed. What this seems to be about is unconscious bias. Buffy is a female, so this much truth, spewing from her mouth becomes (she is the "B" word"). This type of speech has been used countless time in War films (3 times in the film "The Dirty Dozen"), it is a staple of the buddy cop film or Western (the time when the protagonist faces up the odds and says the hell with them) The 1st went into Buffy's home and killed a Slayer, right under Buffy's nose.... things got real, Buffy had to get real, she is not their friend, in order to make sure as many of them make it out alive as possible, she has to "Lead".
@9ansean3 жыл бұрын
Fair points. It would just a little easier to accept if it seemed Buffy instilled more confidence in the notion you get from most of those other speeches. Namely that "we're going to win in the end."

@@9ansean except that is a fantasy at this point, they are at War. You don't get time to coddle someone or bring happiness and daisys to their life, because why you are doing that you will lose more people. People are going to die, 2 people already have in charge, Buffy's job is to decrease the body count, not make everyone feel better about their day. Their day is over, when they are dead. If you look everyone did their job and Buffy gained valuable knowledge about what is to com... so her speech worked. The rules are different in War and they seem still different still for females.

I'll defend it as we know that Buffy needs her friends, her team, to be fully on board with her no matter what but apparently, they're not. Xander, Willow, Spike, and Anya, are simply tired of having to deal with the potentials and so instead of being Team Buffy, they're acting like Team 'Don't Look At Me, I'm Scared' when Buffy needs them more than ever or else she's a one man show who'll be doing all the heavy lifting. Buffy's grown frustrated at this point and it doesn't bode well that she had to bury that girl's body, no ceremony no nothing, and it makes her feel like she's not fit for the job but SHE HAS NO OTHER CHOICE. The problem with Buffy doing these power speeches at times is that Scooby Gang can't seem to back her up and she comes across as this dictator, telling everyone what to do. At this point, by now the Scoobies have no other choice but be on board with her, not just treat her like a friend, 'cause she had to make the most difficult decisions by doing last season starting with Willow's dark power, and then few episodes ago, she had to do that with Anya. She can't be 'coddling' them anymore knowing that she has to get them ready and Xander, Willow, and Anya really aren't much of a help to someone who has to take charge. Either they're in lr they're out. What would've been better for Buffy is if she had gathered the Scoobies with her (Kennedy's not included as she's just a potential 😤), and they discussed this privately before doing the speech to all the girls so that this open criticism against her doesn't make her look bad.
