In Angel 1x09, they said that actual vampires are tainted with human blood, so every generation they are less pure demons and more mixed with humans. They same happened with slayers: the first one was very close to the inner demon, but through generations, they became less demonish and more human. It's cool to notice that.
@trevor3013
@trevor3013 8 ай бұрын
I don't think that's true. Slayers are imbued with the demonic essence of an extremely powerful pure demon. It's not transferred the same way as vampires. Vampires are given a fraction of their sires power and it's more like genetics where it becomes diluted over generations. It's a lot sure but less. Slayers are literally bound to the essence and potentials are born as empty vessels waiting for it. Sineya was only more powerful because she was bloodlusted after the ritual. But even then it's likely buffy could beat her. In the comics buffy described as the most powerful slayer of all time and that's before she becomes a literal superhero (don't ask). But she is way down the line from the original and yet still remains the most powerful. I think the point of the second ritual was to make the slayer line more powerful than ever due to the threat but it wasn't a refresh. It was a literal multiplier. Luckily she didn't do it though cause that's the wrong tool for the job. Balancing evil with good was the wise choice.

The line "and the brains of our operation wears oven mits" 😂😂😂😂. In fairness to Andrew he did ask the First an important question - "are you made up of all the evil in humanity - so if everyone was unconscious - would you cease to exist?" Was a valid question. The First appears to like to drive its victims to take their own lives (Angel, Willow, Chloe etc), its incorporeal, so cant physically do anything - it raises the question - How can Buffy and the Scobbies fight something they cant physically beat....?

I agree, Buffy's speech is ruthtless. And I loved it too. Because it needed to be. It's the second potential that "does that". Like Buffy said, the first is litteraly making her use her strenght to burry them. Also, Buffy knows how bad this is. She feels it with her slayer dreams. And now even more, with what those men showed her. And she keeps seeing everyone rely on her way too much and or not trusting her. I mean, they are in a war and Xander's first reaction to Buffy's speech was "don't forget we are your friends" ? She can't think of friendship right now. She needs to think of the battles, she has to lead them, not play babysitter or take care and make sure to not hurt everyone's feelings. Buffy looks exhausted, she has the weight of the world on her shoulders and has had it for years now. And here, she litteraly has the future of the slayer line to think about, with all the rest. Of course she's not gonna talk gently and stuff. This is war against evil itself. Like Buffy said in her speech after Annabelle died : "They just became an army." « I'm beyond tired. I'm beyond scared. I'm standing on the mouth of Hell and it is going to swallow me whole. And it'll choke on me. We're not ready? They're not ready. They think we're gonna wait for the end to come, like we always do. I'm done waiting. They want an apocalypse? Well, we'll give 'em one. Anyone else who wants to run, do it now, 'cause we just became an army. We just declared war. From now on, we won't just face our worst fears, we will seek them out. We will find them, and cut out their hearts, one by one, until the First shows itself for what it really is... » Buffy said it, but I don't think anyone else realized or really listened to her. Or at least, they didn't accept what it really meant !! There is no place for their feelings getting hurt or for doubts (Xander, Kennedy, Rona...) and holding back their powers (Willow, Spike), they have to be an army, the most powerfull they can be. Because like the first slayer said... it's not enough... SPOILERS AFTER THAT >> That's why in emply places, It makes me even madder. Because you add what Giles and Wood did. All the other times people (Kennedy mainly) doubt Buffy or criticise her decisions... They need a leader like Buffy is being, a general ! That's what Faith does after that. She's not nicer than Buffy, her decisions are way worse (and Buffy was right). But they act like childrens. Brats. They are in a war and instead of following the orders and instincts of the person they should follow (Buffy earned it all those seven years, and with saving, protecting or housing those potentials, damn it) they bitch about it, fight and try to kill each others, betray one another starting with their general (replacing her WTF), think about their feelings or their own opinions above all else... All of this to say that that speech was needed and still will be later, they don't see it, or accept it even with Buffy saying it so bluntly. It will take the bomb killing several potentials for them to realise that. It's infuriating XD Later, when Giles is not happy with Buffy saying Spike is the only one having her back (they even use it against her after that), that's rich. Because to me, it's true. They are helping in some ways, not all of them. But some are helping. But they DO NOT HAVE her back. Or they wouldn't add conflict every chance they got. They wouldn't doubt her and every decision she makes... Giles himself told her she needed to be a general. But as soon as she takes the role he refuses to follow her decisions and desagrees with every of them (and he even goes against one of her decision betraying her, and keeping her busy...), like he knows better than her. He freaking left Sunnydale and Buffy, when she needed him the most, because he wanted her to take the lead and grow. But he doesn't like that she actually does it (and is good at it) or that she doesn't do it the way he would ! The fact that he doesn't agree with Buffy doesn't mean he is right. It showed after that that he was wrong, actually. Spike was needed in the end...

My personal way to give the Scoobies a way out there is that it looks like the Hellmouth is radiating fear, uncertainty and doubt to people around it (very visible on how first the kids at Sunnydale High is effected and later the entire town) and now it have finally reached the Scoobies.

This ep develops one of the themes brought up in 'Restless': the source and real nature of a slayer's power. I appreciate that Buffy, once more, states her uniqueness ('I don't sleep on a bed of bones'...), refusing to give up to the dark side, no matter what. Now she knows what's to come and I can see why she's so shocked. After all, at this point she's the only real resource they have (Willow can't use her magic, Spike is somehow a less effective fighter due to the chip and the soul, potentials look like a bunch of frightened girls whose only power seems complaining) and I'm not surprised about her being that harsh. She is alone standing on the hellmouth and, knowing her, she won't draw back an inch. When the going gets tough, the tough gets going.

Yes, Willow is a power/energy/life sucker. We’ve known that ever since her Dark Willow arc. Kennedy thought it would be “cool” to see that. Maybe even get her hot. But now she’s tasted Willow’s dark side and she understands that there’s nothing fun about it. Willow tried to tell her all this before they became a thing but she wasn’t listening. It took Willow having to take from her to understand how dangerous magic can be. Especially dark magic. Kennedy probably thinks she did it intentionally because it was Willow’s choices and actions. I mean she’s never possessed when she turns into Dark Willow. But it’s more complicated than that. And I’m not sure Willow is going to ever be able to explain it.

In Get It Done we again have the build up to the final battle with the house now teaming with potentials. We have Kennedy going around around like Sergeant Hartman form Full Metal Jacket, trying to be overly aggressive to the potentials in training. When Buffy allows Principal Wood back tot he house we see the first confrontation with Spike. A shocking scene when they come across Chloe who has now hanged herself after being influenced by The First Evil, it seems The First can strike at any time and they seem powerless to stop infiltrating the house. A striking speech by Buffy where Spike gets upset about her saying he was a better fighter without a soul. She turns on Anya in particular saying 'why are you even here'. The Slayers bag that Wood gave Buffy comes into play here, and we see them open a portal and Buffy on the other side of it. Kennedy again being so irritating again when talking to Spike, how we wish it was Oz or Tara there instead. Great scene when Spike gets the leather coat back on, and Wood says 'where did you get it' Spike says 'New York'. Spike shows his power by killing the demon. When Buffy tells Willow of the vision the ancient men showed her, a great transition to the massive army of the Turok-Han. Buffy now knows they need more power.

This is the episode where i rant. The concept of the first slayer is interesting and it was well-executed. She's probably from Africa, the craddle of humanity, she wears beasts fur and clay. Now she speaks a little but it was first suggested from the last episode of season 4 that she's not even having the faculty of articulated language. She's very PAKEOLITHIC. And from the first humans that walked the Earth. Now look at those sorcerers who made her / gave her slayer powers. They wear refined weaved fabrics, jewels made of metal that suggest advanced machinery and metal-melting techniques. I bet they're from cultures that practice agriculture as well. They're from an age far away from the first humans, they're from and advanced NEOLITHIC culture ! Why don't they wear spacesuits and use smartphones ?! It wouldn't be more ridiculous. I'm very shocked, aren't you shocked by this shocking anachronism ?

What the prejudice/bias of soulless/ensouled vampires/demons reveals to us about the character Buffy Summers. Something that’s always bothered me about Buffy’s character and something I do consider to be a flaw of hers is her prejudice and bias of demons/vampires. I always find it quite poignant that the character to “therapize” Buffy in ‘Conversations With Dead People’ is a newly raised vampire who she briefly knew as a human and how he finally puts a name and definition to Buffy’s shows-long complex trauma and condition and basically diagnoses her ‘inferiority complex about having a superiority complex’ in that Buffy deep down feels like she’s better and above everyone else but constantly berates herself for feeling that way. And it’s something significant to unpack and analyze about her character because it tells us why she redefines the meaning of what it is to be ‘The Slayer’ and specifically that it doesn’t only have to be her. Similar to how in Xena the Olympian Gods were much better people as mortals - as human, in Buffy vampires/demons were much better people with souls. But in my view good is as good does and evil is as evil does. There is no inherent-ness to either good or evil. Sure, mortal/human people have internal moral compasses. But even so they’re still capable of great evil, just the same as demons/vampires without an internal moral compass are still capable of great good. So it’s not as simple as what/who is inherently “good” and what/who is inherently “evil” because which it is doesn’t exist as a permanence. As inherent. "You are what you do. You can recreate yourself every second of your life." - Xena, ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’. Buffy only seems to have any real faith in any demon/vampire when they have a soul. Angel being the obvious example as the only vampire/demon with a soul at the time, and then later, Spike when he chooses to restore his soul for her. And okay, given the show’s “canon” vampire/demon lore, this makes sense, right? The Slayer isn’t supposed to like or love demons/vampires. Just hurt/kill them. That’s what she’s there for. But then the show itself purposefully blurs the lines when Spike and Druscilla come into the story. And one in particular - Spike - starts to do good. Exhibit signs of goodness like selflessness and altruism. And Druscilla - well, while remaining evil - does tell us that it’s capable to love without a soul. That they can “love quite well, if not wisely” is how she puts it. Meaning that the love isn’t pure for a vampire/demon. It’s twisted up with desire and obsession. Passion and pain are conflated together because vampires/demons are naturally emotionally stunted so they can’t understand the purity of love and most certainly can’t differentiate it from being an emotion - something they feel - to something there. Something real in that it is something reciprocated. So for the most part, unrequited love is really all a vampire/demon without a soul knows. It’s all they’re familiar with. A love that cannot be a pure love because it’s personal to them and them only. And therefore desire and obsession is confused as love. But then you have to factor in the actions and choices a soulless vampire/demon makes surrounding the theme. What they might do or decide based on feeling a love that is tainted. An unpure or unclean form of love. And this is Spike and Druscilla and even Darla. And you ask yourselves whether that’s “good” or “evil”. But it’s not the right question to ask really - because again - as I said above: “good” and “evil” is not a permanence. Like “positive” and “negative” - they’re just energies and energies can’t be inherent. They’re felt as if they are always there and they can consume either a living or un-living conscious being. But they’re not an external thing or source outside of the being that experiences them as part of them. So I FEEL throughout the show Buffy herself - as our lead main protagonist character - is also just as emotionally stunted as our blurry antagonists. You know, she’s very much the nature of a vampire/demon herself as The Slayer. Human in body but supernatural in mentality and emotionality. She’s fundamentally part demon herself and Season 7 reveals that to us once and for all. Something we always really knew or guessed at. So her prejudice and bias of vampires/demons with/without souls - while as a flaw - also reveals something really quite profound about her character - of which is why all the queer-coding and queer identity-based allegories hit and work so well. She’s essentially constantly in conflict with her identity/nature as a Slayer (queer person) and is taking it out on the vampires/demons (queer people) just like her. So her prejudice and bias towards soulless vampires/demons - specifically Spike - is really - in metaphor - all about her trying to deny and escape from her true identity and her true nature. Which is - part demon. Something of which is only truly negative in her head - and so the narrative follows suit because it’s her show told through her eyes. From the perspective of others characters - supernatural specifically - this is not how it is. In fact they reveal to us something quite the opposite and contradictory to what we’ve been told thus far through their personal experiences and lived history as a soulless vampire/demon. ‘Fool For Love’ being the quintessential episode for this revealing. Showing us how “William” informs “Spike” and back again, and then later in Season 7 also informs ensouled “Spike”. What we’re shown through the actual vampires/demons is something completely different from what we’re told by Buffy or Giles or Wesley or the Council. Buffy’s entire characteristics are encapsulated and surrounded by this Watchers Council-only education/indoctrination of what is a “vampire/demon”. And if anything, her whole arc is about stripping them away. Learning who and what she is without a conditioned, dangerous and purposefully misinformed ideology where Slayer VS vampire/demon is really just herself VS herself and coming to terms with that revelation that she is a superior species because she straddles the line between both worlds and belongs to neither just like all your half-breed demons and supernaturals. Of course this is not what Joss Whedon intended, but who even gives a flying fuck about what he intended? This is what actually makes sense and is simple and logical enough to be understood by a wide range of people. That is relatable and resonant to minorities. That is what makes this show stand the test of time and is what also actually works with the “canon” lore rather than just makes it irrelevant and confusing. I think watching the show through this lens is worth it.

ADAM: “Aggression is a natural human tendency. Though you and me come by it another way.” BUFFY: “We’re not demons.” ADAM: “Is that a fact?” This is why Season 7 is such a disappointment among other reasons. They told us that Buffy was made from a demon. Literally. That’s where her strength, supernatural abilities and darkness comes from. AND THEY NEVER FUCKING EXPLORE IT! They never tell us how or why they did this to women. We instead had to assume that it was a method of oppression in that the ‘chosen’ itself is a system of control over women. They never explain anything other than that Slayers are made from demons. It’s such a fucking waste. Pointless exposition with no real conclusion. And most of Season 7 is this way. There’s so many, arguably great, ideas set up for it. But it’s like they just didn’t bother with them at all. Five By Five Takes used the analogy of having all the pieces to an IKEA desk but instead of constructing them in the logical way, just dump them on the floor. And yeah - that’s accurate. That’s exactly what they did with Season 7 with all the ‘potential’ it had to effectively end the show on a satisfying note. I mean they never even tell us WHAT TYPE of demon. And yes, I would also agree that it was a vampire. Because they’ve made hints to it since practically the beginning of the show that that is her true nature. And that would have been such a poetic endgame for her. The Vampire that turned back into the Human. That’s what we lost because they just couldn’t be bothered with it. And Whedon himself was too hung up on his own flawed ‘demon possession’ lore to see how this would have actually made much more sense. And despite how much I love the depression arc for Buffy in Season 6 with being brought back to life. What if it was that she wasn’t? What if she was unlife instead? What if she became a vampire too? And it was Willow that had to try to find a way to fix that? I think there was much more of a story there with how Buffy and the Gang had to learn to understand half-breed demons rather than just treat them like monsters. And perhaps if they had bit the bullet with Tara and made her actually half-demon, they would have went this way with the overall story. But like you said. Joss was a coward and a stubborn fucking idiot. Exploring someone’s darkness and either learning to reconcile with it or how to defeat it is far better than just keeping to the whole “they’re monsters” theory. Because you actually don’t know if that is the truth.

TW talk of suicide. Something I've been meaning to get off my chest that I alluded to when I wrote about The Killer in Me. It's been said that Kennedy's rough talk with Chloe in training is what partially lead to her suicide and that's their biggest reason for hating her. This is not only unfair and it's suggests a real failure to understand how suicidal tendencies work. There is no indication that Kennedy was riding on Chloe any harder than the rest of them or that she singled her our before. No one incident or experience can explain why anyone decides to take her own life. A person has to be struggling with feelings of burden for some time before they can bring themselves to act on those feelings. And I say this as someone personally HATES the thoughts of military drills. Partially because my own struggles with depression (including suicidal thoughts) leave me largely convinced that kind of intimidation is more than I can handle. But then again I'm NOT somebody who's been chosen to fight demons! It's frankly amazing that anyone would trust the First Evil of to find someone to blame. Let allow just hold on to that the word 'maggot.' Did those people not notice how Buffy's on words that "they're going to die and I'm not going to be able save them" was also used against her? By someone who could've taken any form and said anything to Chloe when she was alone. If there any warning signs that Chloe was struggling, than clearly no caught them in time and there no point of lingering who has the most to regret. Especially since division is exactly what the enemy wants.

Even if Kennedy was riding on all the girls equally and was hard on all of them does it make it any better? You can't use the stick method with everyone, there are more sensitive people who will take it hard and it won't be motivating for them.

Not saying the method was good or motivating. It certainly wouldn't have motivated me. The point was the Buffy was as much responsible for encouraging that kind of intimidation. Both for letting Kennedy command that way in the first place and for saying right in front of them I won't be able to save you from dying. Anyone number of factors can bear down hard on a person. There no one good reason why anyone commit suicide. @@MicukoFelton

I always thought Buffy' decision was so stupid. Dudes: "Here is more power" Buffy: "No" Just... so dumb

@Mrs.Watcher Actually, it did. It was the manipulation that was the problem, not the powers. She would have died without being part demon. Also, we've seen WAY too many good demons by this point for me to think that's an issue.

i guess you'll be first in line to be one of my cybernetic warriors. the implant will make you much more powerful, and also give me absolute control of you. but you always choose power and think it's "dumb" that someone might worry about the price.

@@sirmoonslosthismindThese are the guys that made the Slayer in the first place. If there was any place to get more power, then that would be it.

There are limits to what any woman should be forced to endure for "the good of the whole" They chained her down so that she could be violated by a demon which would make her less human and more demon. She would lose herself and much of her capacity for language. Meanwhile the men who did this to Sineya and were attempting to do this to Buffy were just gonna stand by and be Watchers. No sacrifice of their own. Just using a girl as a demonic tool. That would go completely go against the themes of this show. For good or for ill the Watchers Council was not a body of benevolence. It was a body for male power and female exploitation,. That's why it had to be destroyed in the beginning of this season and the first Council needed to be confronted here.

You're fighting the litteral embodiment of evil, who can't be killed, and you turn your nose up at getting a power up? Why? Because you might turn less human? Naw, couldn't be me. Gimmie all the juice. 😈

If it was a toss up between the end of the world and losing my sense of self, I would still choose my sense of self. I’m no hero.

@@Girl4MusicRight. But we're not talking about you. We're talking about the lady who was just whining about everyone living up to their potential to fight the First. Then deciding against extra power.

@@x-man9473 yes, because that extra power would be for herself. She turned it down because she knew the personal cost. If it was extra power that she could give others, odds are she would have taken it. Wouldn’t affect her. Not like that anyway. Since she seems to careless this episode.
