If you remember Giles already warned Willow to not cross some lines all the way in Season 2 when she was going to give Angel his soul back. Willow getting more powerful and challenging authority of those around her has been a consistent theme so far through the show. Where she is now is a normal progression of where she was at the end of Season 5. And yeah the trio are all characters that Buffy met before in the story. Andrew was supposed to be Tucker who released bunch of demon things that would target anyone with a tuxedo in S3 prom episode. Since the actor was unavailable, they instead cast someone else as his brother who supposedly did something similar offscreen during a school play.

They should pay rent but they're not complete freeloaders. They were taking care of Dawn. Caring for a teenager's not nothing, that's time consuming too. Presumably the bulk of their money from student aid goes into tuition. And as others have pointed out, they've been raising Dawn while being full-time students. The bank manager noted that Sunnydale real estate doesn't hold its value well - It's quite possible that the Summers house is underwater financially too, in which case the monthly payment far outstrips the going rental rate that financial aid would be based around.

First time watching Buffy I asked me the same questions. But like Daniel O'Donovan said: Slayer don't get that old normaly. The Council made sure of this theirself, with the test they do at the 18th birthday of a slayer. They want to control the slayer or let them die to get another one. I didn't get this the first time. Tara has no famliy who surports her, both Willow and Tara have to pay tuitions fees. But Willow and Tara really didn't care much about Buffys financial problems. You call that not helping out with anything? If anything, why isn't Giles contributing financially? He got a SHIT TON OF MONEY in season 5 from the watchers and he continues to get paid despite Buffy's death, when the main responsibility of the slaying is now on Willow. After Buffy is alive again, though, and the dire financial situation forces Buffy out of higher education for good into the service industry despite her already working one of the most important jobs in the world 24/7 unpaid, it doesn't exactly seem fair that Willow and Tara seem to remain lodgers without contributing in at least an on camera way. I think what would've worked the most is if his character had been dead right after Buffy found the bouquet that he left her instead of taking her ice skating, which is that episode I can't recall at the moment but it would've have been best if he never showed 'cause he was killed by something or got into some accident.
@RitsychServare6 жыл бұрын
Another thing I'd like to know besides Willow ad Tara not contributing in order to help with the house is their lack of combat training... actually, I'd like to know why none of the Scoobies bothered to really train to fight vamps/demons and relied on Buffy to do all the work. Ok so she's the Slayer but even when she died, did they even think about doing that in case one of them gets severely injured? I think they all relied on whoever had superpowers like Spike and Willow's witch powers have grown stronger since then, Xander, Anya, and Tara are still no good when it comes to fighting... I'm just sayin'. And you're right, they should at least contribute 'cause it's like Buffy came back with all this financial debt... that's enough to make some people depressed (which wouldn't happen to anyone 'cause no one really comes back from the dead and deal with debt lol)

I disagree with Giles' rather flip comment that Buffy could handle it. Joyce happened to have a well-paying job as well as surplus non-slaying time -- a situation that Giles is more than aware Buffy isn't likely to echo. If he's gotten to pull a salary from the Watcher's council, then the slayer should as well. Or, since the slayer generally isn't burdened with family or friends (by tradition), then it's clearly up to the watcher to provide the means to keep her undistracted from the mission. It really just feels like they're dumping on the recently-dead Bufster. That whole burning down the house thing doesn't seem too outlandish. (Plus: fire...pretty.)
@stanklepoot6 жыл бұрын
I think Giles is just more concerned that Buffy not try to hide from her normal life. A typical Watcher on cares about the slaying. Giles cares about Buffy, and wants her life to be about more than the slaying.
@rexracer32216 жыл бұрын
Joyce probably was also getting child support payments from her ex-husband (and most likely had a settlement from her divorce). Dawn is still underage and her "father" should still be making support payments. This is a major plot hole.
@terpcj6 жыл бұрын
Given what an upstanding father it was implied he evolved into, it's entirely possible that no, he wasn't making any support efforts.
@stanklepoot6 жыл бұрын
Actually, Buffy's dad in general is the big plot hole of the show. In the beginning it seems like he's being described as a bit busy, but loving and eager to make as much time as he can for Buffy considering the new living arrangements. At some point, however, Joss decided to pretty much ditch Buffy's dad, and he became the very definition of absentee parent.
@stanklepoot6 жыл бұрын
True, but we know that Buffy certainly isn't the only slayer to make it to adulthood. In the flashback to Spike's second slayer kill, that slayer certainly looks to be a fully grown woman. She appears to be older than Buffy, in fact. I'd be willing to bet that, in the expanded period of time we're talking about, there have been enough others that it's come up before. Having said that, Buffy is an even rarer case in that she managed to keep up a life a real life with friends and family. Again, though, rare but not the only one I'd bet. Plus, as you pointed out, the Watcher's council has operatives, researches, administrators, and various other support staff who are all drawing salaries. Additionally, the times we see them and any facilities they don't seem to be operating on a shoestring budget. So, yeah, the council should really do everything possible to make sure that all of a slayer's other needs are taken care of so that she can focus on the slaying.

Yeah... the bit where Buffy can't find a way to get payed for Slaying always kind of bugged me. I mean last season she got Giles his Watcher pay restored along with backpay, he didn't give any of that to her? Negotiate the possibility with them of getting her own wage now that they're meant to be on more equal footing? Plenty of people around Sunnydale (heck, her entire graduating year at the absolute minimum) have some idea of what she does day by day, they couldn't set up some kind of communal fund for her?

One thing that always bugged me about Slayers and the Council - why is the Slayer not financially compensated? They expect the Slayer to devote her entire life to fighting evil, shunning family, friends, etc. - shouldn't they also provide a stipend to cover living costs so that a Slayer does not have to take time away from Slaying to support herself? Giles and the Council draw a salary - it doesn't make sense that the Chosen One is expected to make for herself in addition to saving the world constantly.

that willow vs giles scene is one of my all time favorites in all of buffydom. I love how giles says amateur and how willow tells him she's powerful. but you're right wtf willow and tara been living in that house for free all these months and eating using joyce's insurance money which is actually dawn's. like they been mooching off of dawn, a high school student that's like 1 year old. i mean good on them for watching dawn, but still kind of messed up they brought Buffy back just to be like "take care of us." and I don't like how spike is always there when buffy is going through something he's like a little predator idk i know spuffy is huge in the fandom but i'll just never like it. also wish tucker had been available he was so great as aladdin's singing voice. ugh his voice
@stanklepoot6 жыл бұрын
I'm not saying they couldn't or shouldn't contribute financially, but your comment is really the worst possible interpretation of what happened. Another way to look at it is that Willow and Tara are still in college, but they left the dorm and moved in with Dawn so that she could stay in Sunnydale. Having said that, that really only makes sense if Willow was already thinking about how she might bring Buffy back. Without that idea already in the back of her mind (at the very least), they should have just let her dad (well, technically only Buffy's dad, but he doesn't know that) take her.
@timolee6 жыл бұрын
yeah they are in college and most college student have jobs. it's their third year and they don't even have internships. willow and tara are really lucky that they don't have to work multiple jobs to pay their tuition. they used water, electricity, gas, etc. and paid for it all with joyce's insurance that was meant for Buffy and Dawn. just because my interpretation doesn't paint them in a whole positive light doesn't mean that those events didn't happen. it's also really even worse if willow knew all along that she was going to bring Buffy back from the start and that's why they kept dawn because she didn't care about the financial situation she was going to bring Buffy back to. she didn't think about Buffy just herself if that's the case. also really doubt Buffy bot paid for herself. all of those parts must have been expensive and fixing her must have been too.
@stanklepoot6 жыл бұрын
Most full time college students who have jobs have part-time jobs for spending money and incidental expenses. Then again, Willow and Tara are also taking care of Dawn and still trying to carry on with the whole protecting Sunnydale thing. So, not a whole lot of time for an internship, really. I'm not saying they couldn't be doing more (or anything really) to help out with expenses. I always got the impression that Willow's parents had a bit of money. Not rich, but comfortable. Perhaps Willow could have got some help from them, especially seeing as she didn't need them to pay for a dorm room or meal plan at that point. As for painting them wholly in a positive light, I certainly wouldn't do that. I actually agree with Giles. Willow is acting recklessly and dealing with forces older and darker than she could possibly understand at this point. Tara is a sweetie, but at this point I think she's a bit too deferential to Willow. It's not to anywhere near the same extent, but it's like she's partially falling back into a relationship like the one she had with her family. The difference here is that she'll actually speak up before she goes along with what Willow decides, and it doesn't seem to impact how she interacts with the rest of the group.
@timolee6 жыл бұрын
i agree with a lot that you said. but i doubt willow and tara wouldn't be able to split duties of taking care of dawn while one works to earn income. they were quick to call spike to babysit her it seems like quite often so i doubt dawn was this huge deal they needed to constantly watch. she's a high school student. seems like they were just not using their time properly. they were patrolling which could eat up time but it's still not an excuse to use up dawn's money that her mom left her for themselves. sorry i just won't think it right that they did that.
@joeypotter60514 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with everything you've said. Willow and Tara suck (Willow especially for her total lack of remorse for bringing Buffy back when it's clear that Buffy is miserable). And I hate Spuffy too. Piss off, Spike. Stop hanging around outside her house leaving your cigarette butts all over the lawn.

Of course it makes sense that Willow and Tara should be contributing to household support, and it makes sense that The Watchers council should be providing some sort of stipend or support for the Slayer who is kinda working for them or at least for their purpose. This season is mostly about Buffy growing up and being like a single mom struggling right now. So those very good points are ignored for the sake of the story metaphor.
@antonbrakhage4905 жыл бұрын
Willow and Tara are busy with college, and between that, Slayer stuff, and taking care of Dawn, probably don't have time to get jobs. They contribute in other ways than money. The Council absolutely should pay the Slayer, but its well-established in the show that the Council are a) assholes, and b) cheap.

Giles just told Willow off and Willow threatened him. DANG. 4. And am I seeing things right? Did Buffy and Spike literally just bond and have a nice little chat there? 5.
