What I love about this show is that Willow going dark was kinda hinted I'd say even in season 1. I remember when she accidently freed Moloch by scanning the book he was trapped in. He discarded other humans, but was "in love with her" and wanted her by his side. I wonder if he sensed in her that power and her potential to go dark. There was also the alternate vampire version of her. She successfully used dark magic to bring Buffy back. D'Hoffryn tried to recruit her and that was the biggest red flag for me, it was right as she became addicted to magic. It's really sad that we could see her clearly going down that road since season 3. It shows that addiction is all about the addict themselves, the gang couldn't stop it, meeting Tara didn't stop it either.

Your reactions are so consistent with how we felt and reacted when this aired. The death of Tara was devastating to us but after 118 episodes we were somehow not completely wrecked. The years of trauma had hardened us slightly ( some of my group never forgave Angel for Jenny). To see and watch Dark Willow was jolting for us and shook us. However in time ( and rewatches with my friends) we have decided this has been going on since Willow “ felt something go through her “ when she was practicing the dark vengeance curse at the end of Becoming Part 2. But we all believe the Willow we knew and loved ceased and changed that night. The brilliant storytelling has gone on since then and Willow was on this path.There are many clues but just recall that D’Alfeicht wanted Willow to be a vengeance demon working for him in Forever Blue in Season 4. He recognized the darkness and evil vengeance within, Willow wasn’t fully ready. Lastly about Becoming Parts 1&2. Part 1 details the past of the change points for Angel, Darla, Drusilla, and Buffy. Some say there are not the backstories on Part 2. There are. They are not in the past but are in the present day moments that change snd define lives. ( Whistlers narration is key.) We have the Becoming stories of the moments that change Willow and Spike. They were not in the past but happening in front of us. Spike became wrapped in The Slayer when he teamed with her. ( Hello cutie ) We know this from Drusilla in 1998 South America and the way both Angel and Dracula were obsessed with Buffy. Willow allowed the evil that was the Gypsy dark magic and power of serving vengeance to become part of her. Willow has been on this Dark Willow path since she threw her head back, changed her body language, and spoke confidently in Romanian. It may be one of the greatest character arcs and changes in entertainment taking place on front of millions and no one putting the pieces of the puzzle together. The only thing that has been holding Willow from the embrace of darkness was the light of Tara. Without the light and goodness that was Tara, the weaknesses of Willow will take over and…. Watch out world…. Dark Willow is here.

It's perhaps not the most popular opinion in the fandom but Season 6 is my favourite season, and this episode is one of the reasons why. What Willow does is a shock, but in hindsight it's also completely in character for her the way she's been going over the last couple of years. Fun fact: apparently the original plan for 'Tough Love' in Season 5 was that Glory would actually kill Tara, thus triggering Willow's dark-magic-rage attack on her. But Joss decided he wanted to keep Amber Benson on the show for another year, so Glory only hurt her instead of killing her, and Willow's scary black-eyed look in 5:19 became foreshadowing for, well, this.

After Seeing Red there is only one way the last three can go in the Season. It had been intimated all through this Season that even though Willow had sought help and was trying to curb her addiction, anything could set it off. Well her witnessing Tara's death is the catalyst for ultimate revenge and mayhem. It's now very much in the realm of Liam Neeson in Sam Raimi's brilliant film Darkman where relentless devastating revenge is sought on all who wronged him. Willow is now all powerful, and we feel will be unstoppable. Great scene in the bar when Warren tells them all he killed the slayer, and they tell him she is still alive. Little does he know it's not Buffy he has to fear. Once Rack has informed Warren that he can sense the power of the new Dark Force in the witch we know Warren will be doomed. Willow is now without any feeling or empathy, even when she draws the bullet from Buffy there is no emotion or feeling. Warren thinks he can fool Willow with Robot Warren, but when Buffy and Xander plea with Willow she says' I'm not coming back', she will get her retribution. A brilliant scene with Dawn too when she says to Buffy 'I'd do it myself if I could' as young girl and human, she has has that emotion and hatred towards Warren, a natural reaction many would feel. Xander makes a good point here in that you don't have to be a Vampire or Demon to be pure evil, saying Warren is as bad as any human 'sent to Dustville'. We see Spike seeking a similar way to Angel in 'The Trial' episode from the Angel Show, where is he seeking something by completing ultimate dangerous tests, but the restoration of what? The final scene of Willow placing the bullet into Warren and sealing his lips is amazing. Still we feel hatred towards him as he is still showing no remorse, a truly detestable character worse than any Demon. As Buffy, Xander and Anya witness the skinning alive of Warren they are horrified. Willow says to them 'one down' there really are 'Two To Go'. A brilliant S6 episode.

I like how the writers carefully distinguish between fantasy deaths and real life deaths. When characters we care about die, like Joyce, it is always by ordinary everyday causes, like cancer. Here it is another very common humdrum tragedy in America, a shooting. The writers spent the season establishing that the Trio were ineffectual dorks, comic relief. They were never more than an irritation to Buffy. But the most nerdy adolescent, with a gun, in a moment of passion can become a mass murderer, changing lives forever.
@noahrobin194122 күн бұрын
I don’t claim the writers had this in mind from the beginning, but I really like the slow leveling of Willow’s command of magic over the years. She’s gone from using long incantations to cast spells to simply manifesting her will on the world (pun very much intended). At the end of Season 5, she simply says “separate” to split people up when they were hiding from Glory. In S6, she had to request Osiris return Buffy’s soul through a complex ritual. A bit later, she’s in the middle of a complex incantation with Tara and then just opens her eyes and says “Solid”, much to Tara’s surprise. And in this, she’s /commands/ Osiris to appear. The slowest of slow burns over several seasons, done in a way which I think feels completely organic; good stuff.

This season was all about the Scooby gang confronting real life, making a living, fixing plumbing leaks, etc. Last episode showed the ultimate in real life problems in America, a common everyday shooting. This episode continues the metaphor of the fallout of a shooting. One of the most common results of a gun crime is uninvolved bystanders being shot. Another is friends of the victim getting revenge on the perpetrator, thus becoming criminals themselves, destroying their own lives. All due to a moment of pissy anger by an ineffectual dorky adolescent - who had a gun.

I think the media landscape has changed since this came out, because it seems so weird to resist killing Warren now, but I vaguely remember shows at the time having rules around "the action/death is contained to the fantasy element of the show, no killing in real-world scenarios" was a more common rule back then, even in shows aimed at older audiences.

Hah, you're surprisingly upbeat given the subject matter :). The show's a bit inconsistent here what with how many knights Buffy seemingly straight-up merced back in S5 but it's still true - Warren deserves to be punished but good people don't just murder people, even _very_ bad ones (I choose to assume the many fans that seemingly _are_ totally fine with it would view things differently if it weren't "just" a TV show though recent events in the news have actually made me wonder). (and I think the summoned being says "natural order" rather than "natural causes" i.e. it's just normal human events, not magical, not some grand fight for all of existence etc.)

This is the best heel turn of any fantasy series I know of. It's especially interesting to compare it to a certain other fantasy TV series featuring a blonde heroine who everyone loved, who turned into a villain at the end, but in a much more abrupt way. Both were a long time coming, for sure. But the "Buffy" writers did a better job of signaling Willow's turn than the writers of the other series did -- even though the clues were all there in that series too. I don't know of anyone who was angry at Willow going down this path. While it seems like everyone was angry at the evil turn in the other series.

Hello, Jules. 💜 A, somewhat, tough one again today. Except Warren ask for it, and he got even a bit more than he bargained for. Of course, since this is a Whedon World, we couldn’t let Dawn get away. Leaving her alone, to find Tara, was a tragic blow, which fit the tale, but wasn’t actually necessary to the story itself. But she gets to hang out with Clem, so she has the best available deal here after all. Jeff Kober - Rack. Perfect character - he is confidant, and seems even more dangerous, owing to the fact he lets Warren know he doesn’t care. Always good to see him. I don’t think Willow “operating” on Buffy, would do any harm, it seems a power, but not necessarily dark power. She just repaired her, which, to me demonstrated that Willow, is focused, on a mission, but not really out of control. It is almost as if, this is the real Willow. Maybe not the sort of thing she imagined for herself, years ago, but where her life and times have taken her, and this is how she handles the reality of her existence. Warren - well, he knew the world he wanted to live in, but hubris led him to imagine he was a much better, bigger, player than he really was. With his attitude, especially toward the other girl, and her memory, he deserved all that - quick, simple, and very much to the point. 🤯 But it would appear Willow has two others she wants to catch up with, and that could be a bit problematic, 🫣 for everyone, except Dawn - who has Clem, and snacks! 🤪 I am very interested to see haw this all plays out, and how your predictions fare.. I like your thoughts on Anya’s future, but I am not sure the writers would want to let her go, especially since they are on a roll with character's becoming their not so better selves again. 🫢 Have a great day, Jules. 💜🤗💜I know it is fire time over there as well, and am glad it seems to be confined to non-populated areas, from what I here, but I do worry about the wildlife. Enjoy your take-away night. It’s scrape together Friday for me - rice, green beans, onions, mayo, and tuna for me here. Take car Be Well. 😊

Ooooh Yayah! I've been waiting for this episode. We are really in the thick of it now and you've been introduced to the real Big Bad of Season 6 - Dark Willow. 😎 I don't condone her actions, but it's a spectacle watching her carry them out. Even if that flaying scene is the most gruesome and shocking scenes in the entire show. I love how they lull you into a false sense of security with the Trio, making you think this season has a pretty lame Big Bad(s). But you think it's alright because the season focuses on much stronger and darker character arcs for the Scoobs, so you don't mind a lighthearted enemy. Then they step the Trio up and make you realise that they are dangerous, especially Warren. Then finally we get the reveal that they were never the true Big Bads, they were just a precursor; a catalyst. Because throughout the season we were witnessing Willow's villain origin story and we didn't even know it. It's some masterful storytelling. I'm looking forward to seeing what you think as the rest of it plays out.

Willow summoned Osiris without the urn which is wild.. and according to the script, she killed Osiris (or the demon that spoke for Osiris) also I spoke of this once, willow saying "bored now" is proof that vampires are the same as the person they were when alive, only difference is their lack of morality (their soul), but it's still the same person. Angel is an outlier compared to every other vampire we meet. I wanted him to get what he deserved, but I don't think anyone deserves that. I figured she'd just put the bullet slowly through him, you know? And then he'd be dead in the same way he killed Tara, an eye for an eye. I had hoped the dark magic books would have had a way to bring Tara back and that was why Willow went for them. I never saw this as an outcome. Dark Willow is a place we were always headed from the day she brought Buffy back, though. Maybe even from the day she let the dark magic in to reensoul Angel at the end of season 2. You can't play with the kind of power without it starting to play with you.

Tara's death reminds me of Jenny Calendars. Shocking, sudden, and natural; and thus final. Notice that both also happened right as the couple who were on a break are getting back together.

I’ve always thought that Willow could have used Anya and killed two birds with one stone: made a wish to kill Warren before he even fired a shot, which would get revenge on him and bring Tara back. That should have occurred to Willow. But maybe it’s that she didn’t know Anya was a vengeance demon again. But Anya could have done it. In “The Wish” she created an entire different timeline. So she had the power to do that.

I actually like it. It definitely would have made a good story.

I was thinking the same thing. There are plenty of options for a form of vengeance that averted Tara's death. Wish that in the previous episode's fight, Buffy had hit Warren that bit too hard and broken his neck. Wish that his jetpack had exploded and torn him apart five seconds after he took off. Wish that Warren's gun had been poorly maintained and blown up in his hand, and that the bullet which hit Tara instead went through his face...

All the things Warren did to try and get away from Dark Willow were mechanical. They were tools. Which is emblematic of him as a person who makes things.

Idk if you noticed Buffy protected Xander when Warren shotted. Really strong ending even if Tara is a horrible loss 😢 Warren is one of the most crual villains

That moment went by SO quickly, it was hard to catch everything! And yes, Warren is just awful 😭

I hate Warren so much. This ending was cathardic. I like how "Sofie Reacts" reacted when Willow shushes Warren at the end. And I can't not think of her quote anymore, when I watch that scene nowadays 😅. It's like: Willow: "Shhh...." Sofie: "Okay, okay, she's SCARING me!..." 😅🤭

The audience watching this episode when it first aired reacted to Warren's demise with that same instance of shock, followed by a huge applause. Warren certainly earned his fate.

Osiris is not a demon. Osiris is the god of death and the underworld in Egyptean mythology. He is the equivalent to Hades in the greek pantheon, Hel in the Norse pantheon or Pluto in the Roman pantheon (all of these gods are depicted completely wrong by Holywood all the time. They are always depicted as evil and the antagonists to the main gods in Holywood movies, however that is not at all their role in the actual mythology.

As Osiris (the ancient Egyptian god of the dead, with jurisdiction over all dead souls) specifically said, it was "a human death by human means". In other words, whether or not you consider it natural causes, there was nothing supernatural about it. Nothing outside of mundane human experience. Thus, not subject to reversal by magic.

In contrast to most of the comments here, I actually don't disapprove of Willow killing Warren as a way of avenging Tara's death. I am a firm believer in the death penalty for murderers, and Warren is certainly a murderer. It's arguably not quite murder one (premeditated), because he didn't kill the person he was trying to, but did kill someone else instead, though that was due to carelessness. (Legally, felony murder is often treated like first-degree, but I'm not sure I'm on board.) That said, Willow is still wrong. Because she didn't kill Warren (I won't call it murder) because he killed Tara and tried to kill Buffy. She killed Warren because he "took Tara away from me" -- because she, Willow, had lost a friend. Tara's only value was in being Willow's (girl)friend, and now Willow lost that. It's a selfish vengeance, not a justified one. And the proof that she was not motivated by respect for Tara is that _she left Tara's body alone_ for Dawn to find. In my culture, the respect we show the deceased is to not leave the body alone for even a moment between the death and the burial. (I've kept vigil in a morgue myself on two occasions, waiting for hours until nightfall, for the undertaker.) Willow leaving Tara to save Buffy is excusable, but leaving Tara to go after Warren? Dawn had the right idea, not wanting to leave Tara's body alone. And the right idea about Warren needing to pay. But Willow? It was all about her, not Tara. That's what she said to Buffy and Xander. That's how she spoke to Warren. That's how she mistreated Tara back in the beginning of the season. And that's why -- well, you know what happens. Anyway, thanks for sharing, Juliette. Tissues? Tears? Virtual hug?

I agree that Willow becoming a murderer was bad, but it's hard to think of how they could have stopped her, or a better way to deal with Warren. The police couldn't have handled him. He was as evil as any vampire or demon, but it would have spiritually damaged any of the Scoobies to kill him. Maybe if they had called the Initiative, they could have arrested him and locked him up along with Ethan Rayne. Or if someone else who wanted vengeance (like Dawn) had made a wish, then Anya could have transformed him into something harmless and pathetic, like a fish they could just toss in the ocean.

They spent a lot of effort making warren hate-able so the killing was more palatable.

All Willow did was elevate the bullet. She didn’t really heal her using black magic
@julesreacts22 күн бұрын
Oooh yes, that's true!
@jeanlafayette715221 күн бұрын
Slayer healing doesn't generally work quite as rapidly as was shown with the closing up of Buffy's wound, so I think there was magic beyond the elevation of the bullet taking place there.

I don't think Buffy was healed by dark magic. It was regular magic by someone who happened to be dark.
