Giles' old mate, Ethan Rayne, is a delightful shit-slinger, and the late Robin Sachs does a good job in the role.

No spoilers of course, but you are very, very good at anticipating some of these plotlines. I'm actually amazed because Joss Whedon is a master of subverting expectation. Kudos.

It still bugs. With an automatic rifle the bullets could easily go through the wall of a house and into a person. There are very good reasons that discharging firearms within city limits is illegal. Especially high powered ones. A magnum handgun loaded with magnum bullets can go through a person, two walls, & still have enough power to lodge itself in someone. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜

You practically wrote this episode. I hope it was still as enjoyable to you as it was to me even though you saw every twist coming. This is where Buffy levels up to being a step beyond where it was. As for bad episodes, you don't skip them, but I just wouldn't rewatch the first three seasons as much as I would 4-7.

I was curious about which came first, so I looked it up, and that _Simpsons_ episode aired 8 years after this one! The only other somewhat similar tv plot that I can think of would be the _Twilight Zone_ episode about the masks, but I'm sure there are more that I am unaware of!

Technically, paper was used to clean up after using the bathroom since the 2nd century BCE in China, but the first written message of it was from the mid 5th century CE. It didn't become a thing in The West until 1857.

Halloween was a good fun entertaining episode, but also containing some great reveals. Firstly anyone who thought Giles was this prim and proper bookworm Englishman better think again, yes he is of course this, but we are introduced to the interminable Ethan Rayne, and we first get to see Giles called 'Ripper'. Willow also has to come out of her sheepish ways and take control, we see her first outfit, and then revert to the ghost costume. Oz is gradually being introduced through his attraction to Willow. Buffy hams it up as the 'lady' from the past and it is great when she breaks free of the spell 'guess what Honey I'm home'. All in all you can see the episodes getting better and better as the Series progresses.

Not a spoiler because it's never ever made explicit, but the writer of most Ethan episodes has confirmed that she intended him not just as an old mate of Giles, but an ex. So watch out for that vibe, you're not imagining it! I would pay £££ to see a Buffy prequel spinoff called Ripper about young Giles and his exploits ☠️☠️☠️👀

You're right that no real person is ever as one-dimensional as 18-th century Buffy comes across, but, then, she's meant to be a costume. Now, I wouldn't mention this if you hadn't left the reference in, but... assuming you haven't already seen one or both of them, I enthusiastically suggest that at some point you react to Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and its first spin-off, Xena: Warrior Princess. 👀

Yes, I always took it to be more of what Buffy's perception of what life was like for women at that time, as opposed to the show saying this is actually what women were like.

@@JabberwockyReacts Agreed. I do love the show but I also cringed at certain points of the show that most people wouldn't ever pick up on. Every time Dean said, "Gone off the reservation..." I had to remind myself that most white people have no idea how incredibly racist that saying is.

Great episode, obviously. But on the "feminist tangent" (here I go :P, I'm used to apologising for it too ^^) Themes like "traditional women's rolls are dumb, and the women who choose them are dumb" are EXACTLY why I became hyper critical OF feminism. Contempt for femininity and women's roles was MUCH more common from feminists in the 90s, but it's still quite common today. So, go right ahead! Complain away. It deserves criticism for the misogyny it REALLY is. I WOULD suggest it is... forgivable? if we assume that the person's assumptions somehow influence the persona of the costume. That this isn't ACTUALLY a noblewoman from that time, but instead Buffy's perspective of what women from then were like. And considering the VERY common attitudes of the time (again: contempt for traditionally feminine roles) I can see why she would think that. Fact is, these attitudes still influence thinking. (just ask yourself how often "progressive" people criticise women for dressing sexy. Or the EVER present criticism of sexy women in media as "male gaze"... as if women lack agency, women don't like to be sexy AND male sexuality is somehow an inherently bad thing) People (especially feminists) seem convinced that women did nothing until the 70s. They were chattel, abused by men ("the patriarchy") with no agency. Just ignore all of the women who did stuff before then :P It's galling bc women ABSOLUTELY were restricted and attitudes towards them WERE condescending at best. So the women that DID accomplish great things are EVEN MORE badass! But humans were still humans. They still loved each other, protected and supported each other. They still wanted what was best. It's simply that technology and culture were wildly different. (example: Women lacked property rights, in MOST instances, BUT the flip side was that men were criminally liable for their care. And it ignores that MOST people didn't own property at all & lived far more egalitarian lives. Your typically farming family was unlikely to include a "stay at home mom" considering the WHOLE family was needed to work the land. People's view of history is WILDLY distorted by what the aristocracy was doing) I could rant for days on this stuff, bc I find discourse remains rather... myopic. But suffice it to say that as much progress as we've made (and we have!) we still have more to do.
@jonsigwanz7993 Жыл бұрын
Buffy is very much a feminist story and while there are parts of the show that still feel on point and progressive even today, there are also a lot of things that feel seriously dated such as the ideas about traditional femininity. I'm not saying that anyone person has to embrace traditional femininity but if that's what's right for you go for it.
@brianmiller3529 Жыл бұрын
I definitely agree with most of your comment here! But I'm a little confused about how it's stuck in traditional femininity? This entire episode for Buffy is her thinking that's what she wants and then going, "no f*** that". There are other characters that stick to it... But like you said, that's their choice! And obviously I guess it's a little inconsistent. Reptile Boy plays in bad gender stereotypes.
