Prior to high school, starting at 1st grade kids are typically 6 turning 7 at some point during the school year, up through 8th grade where kids are 13 turning 14. High school is grades 9-12, so high school freshmen are typically 14-15, sophomores 15-16, juniors 16-17, and seniors 17-18. At this point, not having had her birthday yet, Buffy is 16.

Ian (a KZbinr of Passion of the Nerd fame), calls certain episodes "candy episodes". They may not be the best, BUT they are enjoyable. You'll find several people in the comments who are familiar with his videos. Ian is still in the process of his Buffy Guide, Angel Guide, & Firefly Guide. I don't recommend watching any of them until you've finished the series though. Too many spoilers. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜

The age difference between Tom and Buffy isn't the problem. That's around five years. The big deal is he is legally of consent and Buffy is legally not. Angel (without vampire age taken into account) is in the same boat as Tom as Buffy's mom acknowledges in the episode _Angel._ She, Buffy's mom, who doesn't know about vampires and therefore doesn't even know the vampire aspect of it all recognized Angel as too old for her underage daughter.

a lot of states have "romeo and juliet" laws, but california relies solely on prosecutorial discretion to keep the older half of dual-seventeen couples out of prison during the time between their birthdays.
@Buffy8Fan Жыл бұрын
@@sirmoonslosthismind SPOILERS THROUGH SEASON THREE Not going to jail doesn't exclude it's overall statutory aspects. That's why I have issue with Angel even as a vampire who no one is going to arrest considering who is charge of the police in Sunnydale (Richard Wilkins III). Angel commits wrong-doing with Buffy one way or the other, and whether punished or not. Same goes for Tom on whether he's punished or not. And in California age of consent is eighteen. Seventeen is still underage in that state.
@sirmoonslosthismind Жыл бұрын
@@Buffy8Fan i'm not sure how you can continue making that argument. you're essentially saying that the majority of california children are criminals.

@@Buffy8Fan It’s also against the law to have sex with a dead person. If Angel goes to jail for breaking the law, then Buffy is right next to him. You can’t apply human laws to the supernatural world which has an entirely different set of circumstances.

I agree with your thoughts on predictability; IMO, when done well, a plot line should be entirely predictable, bordering on obvious…in retrospect. It should click into perfect place precisely when it has to but not before. I’m not a writer, but I have to imagine that’s a tricky beast to wangle. A note on this one: it feels as thought it may have been at least partially inspired by the Skull and Bones secret society in the US (it has a Wikipedia article, if you’re interested). I’ve no earthly idea how well known it is outside the States, so figured I’d mention it. Cheers.

There are only a few “bad” episodes and you’ve already got past a few of them - teachers pet, I robot you Jane, and some assembly required are among the lowest-ranked of the whole show. Personally, I love the “bad” episodes at this point in my fandom, bc I know the show so well that I can just revel in the cheesiness, enjoy the great character moments, and ignore the irritating parts. I think they’re a little more painful for reactors on a first-time viewing 😂 My personal favorite “bad” episode marks off at least 3 of your bingo chart options! Lol

"Monster of the week" - yes. "Filler" - maybe. But I always liked this episode. We git so many good Cordelia scenes/lines. If you don't have the best storyline for an episode just give Cordelia more screen time and it will still be an episode above average.

Freshman=9th grade=14-15 typically Sophomore=10th grade=15-16 typically Junior=11th grade= 16-17 typically Senior= 12th grade= 17-18 typically. College is different, but it essentially follows the same pattern. So, Buffy is 16, and the guy is likely 21 or 22.

Maybe things are different than they used to be, or maybe its different cultures. When I was in high school, in Canada, in the early 90s, it was rare to find a girl that was 16, or over, that was dating a guy still in high school. The norm was a 2-3 year difference. Up to 5 years, wasn't commented on, if the girl was over 16, but more than that and people would talk.

There is no genre more predictable than romance. Boy meets girl (or whatever, these day). They go through difficulties, usually involving misunderstandings as well as external challenges. And they end upbtogether in the end in a "happily ever after". If you don't have those, you don't have a romance. And no genre sells as well either. Most "best seller" lists explicitly exclude romance because otherwise they'd list nothing else. Predictability is not a downcheck provided the ride is appealing enough.

Machida (that's the serpentine demon's name) is reminiscent of a similar monster from a contemporary show that WAS derived from mythology. That may have been a coincidence, but I have my suspicions. ... You're entirely on the money when you defend shiws being either "predictable" or "monster of the week." Especially since the only way to keep a show from being truly "predictable" at all is to have the characters never do anything either logical or fun to watch.

A filler monster of the week on an episode to be honest. Cordelia kinda steals the show here, but the metaphor being when young and innocent be wary of older more experienced people. Giles recognises he has to ease Buffy into her role instead of pushing her. Much better episodes to come.
