I don't find it cruel. I find it deserving. After all the horrific things Angelus did, why does he deserve to find love and happiness? The soul is a punishment, not something Angelus ever wanted. Or was planning to get back if snapping Jennys neck was anything to go by. I think this should've really been hammered home, but...🤷‍♀️ the show wanted it glossed over. At least for Angel.

+Zach Kabia Spike CAN beat Angel in a fight, season 5 proved it. Of course, Angel is stronger than Spike, but their skills and abilities are close enough that under certain circumstances, Spike can get the upper hand and win.

+Zach Kabia Yes he can, he literally already did beat him in a fight! Even if it's just once, and you're forgetting that Spike has grown quite a bit as a fighter since their old rivalry, especially given that Spike has been much more active as a fighter in his life time than Angel. While Angel spent 100 years brooding over his crimes, Spike was still being a vampire, killing people, other demons and even went out of his way to hunt down slayers. Not to mention that Spike and Angelus had completely different MOs since Angelus was more into torturing helpless beings and only fought when he had to, while Spike lived for the fight. Angel didn't start becoming a more active fighter until Buffy came into his life. That''s what I meant by under certain circumstances, Angel lacked motivation, which was what cost him the fight. But being under motivated isn't the same as acting as if Angel was a paraplegic. Physically speaking, he was still in top form during that fight and was fully capable of fighting back, but he still lost and clearly did put effort into that fight, he just didn't have his full concentration. I'm not even a huge Spike fan, I think he's an overrated character, but it's silly to claim that Spike couldn't EVER beat Angel in a fight, especially when the show proves otherwise. Angel is the more powerful vampire, but if the circumstances happen to be tipped towards Spike's favor, then he CAN win.

Spike won that fight in season 5 because he wanted it more than Angel, or rather, because Angel didn't care about the Shanshu prophecy anymore. At the end of the episode Angel said this to Gunn "He beat me Charles, he wanted it *more* than I did." A few episodes later Spike attacked Cordelia and Angel picked him up and body slammed him like it was nothing and again made the point "Hurt Cordy again and it'll be our last rematch" or something like that - in other words if he has something to actually fight for then he would beat Spike.
