I recently discovered a gem of the 80's, the movie "Night Of The Comet" [1984]. It seems to have influenced Joss Whedon and inspired BTVS. The 2 main protagonists even have a dog named Buffy ! How about doing a reaction to that film ?

9:52 YES! Thank you! Finally someone recognizing and appreciating Michelle acting. She got so much hate for her "whiny teenager performance" but in my opinion she has a lot of scenes where she really shines and shows a lot of acting potential. Not to forget, she was only 14/15 years old at that time.
@meggo3292 жыл бұрын
That and they wrote her character to be much younger and then went with Michelle and older actress. So she sounds 11 because they wrote her dialogue that young. I always liked dawn.

Growing up I always hated her "whiny teenage" stuff but now that I'm well into adulthood, she nails it man. And behaves about as I'd expect a 14 year old to in this situation, she made me a lot angrier when I watched at that age range perhaps too much of a mirror lol

Some brilliant dramatic scenes in this episode. The scene where Dawn cuts herself was so hard to watch, that coupled with the fact that she is realising that her life has been a lie, and she doesn't know her true belonging. Spike has always spoke the truth to Buffy, and is always the most perceptive all them all. Some light relief when he says to Buffy 'not only is she a blob of energy but also a 14 year old hormone bomb' The Ben/Glory reveal incredible at the time. Such a powerful scene at the end when Buffy joins hands with Dawn saying it was 'Summers Blood'
@Kayjee172 жыл бұрын
You're right, Spike is able to see things clearly, without the ties of friendship or respect, and so he tells Buffy and the Scoobies the plain facts without trying to spare anyone's feelings. And I know that the ship of Spuffy is controversial with parts of the Buffy fandom, but I love it. Spike showed with Drusilla that he's capable of worshipping the object of his affection, and I think Buffy deserves that level of feeling after how her previous relationships ended. It's too bad Buffy doesn't consciously realize how Spike feels, but she is starting to see Spike has value.
@sheltondaal64252 жыл бұрын
Ehhh Spike worships the object of his affection, but he also thinks that he owns them and is entitled to their love, bodies, etc. I think Buffy deserves someone who can take no for an answer.
@phueal2 жыл бұрын
Worshiping the object of your affection is still objectification. It may not be as nasty as the more obvious objectification of women as sex objects that you see in other places, but in both cases the woman is objectified: her feelings and desires, indeed her whole personality, are ignored, and she is reduced to simply an object in relation to you. Whether he’s worshiping her or sexualising her, in either case he’s not in a genuine relationship with the whole of her.
@TigerNightmare2 жыл бұрын
@@phueal Infatuation doesn't necessarily mean artificiality. While Spike does see any romantic/sexual relationship as a co-ownership and co-dependency, the net result of his feelings is that he'll dedicate himself to her safety and happiness. He'll endure any amount of suffering and even death if it means she or someone she cares about is safe. And let's be honest, there's way too many people who view marriage, or even just commitment, as ownership. Spike doesn't have a soul, at least he has an excuse.
@Kayjee172 жыл бұрын
@@phueal Spike is a vampire without a soul. There is no way he and Buffy could have a healthy relationship because a vampire without a soul isn't capable of experiencing real love. However, I'm of the opinion that if Buffy would let Spike treat her well, which he's proven he wants to do, he would be good for a rebound guy who would help Buffy see she's still desirable and worth loving - something that Riley, Parker, and even Angel a little bit, have made her doubt.
@sheltondaal64252 жыл бұрын
@@Kayjee17 I'm not going to go into full S6 spoilers, but do you honestly think Spike would be satisfied as the rebound guy? He'd always want more of her and all of her. Let's say Buffy ignored her own needs and as you put it "let Spike treat her well" (already a very messed up notion but whatever) and then a year later wanted to break up or pursue another relationship. The Spike that you're romanticizing would 100% go back to stalking and harassing her. Why should she ever entertain a relationship with such volatility. I'd suggest you read this article linked. Buffy shouldn't need a guy (and especially one who has an issue with stalking and boundaries) to help understand that she's worth loving. screenrant.com/buffy-vampire-slayer-season-5-episode-15-romantic-tropes-bad/

I have a bit of a theory about Spike and Joyce and Dawn's interactions - I see most of his relationship with then attributed to trying to impress Buffy (which could for sure be a part of it) or as proof of his "love" (I think it is at this stage a selfish or obssesional desire for Buffy, not mature love). But I also suspect that Spike's deepest driving desire at his time of siring is acceptance (assuming the lore that the deepest id desires are unhindered and pursued when a person becomes a vampire) and Joyce and Dawn are 2 people that just casually accept him as he is and so he doesn't automatically put on his defences with them. This is also an incredibly relatable aspect of his character (who amoung us doesn't want acceptance) and I think part of what draws people into the arc as a whole.
@transmatized2 жыл бұрын
spike is one of the only people, if not THE only person, buffy communicates with in a completely honest way. the biggest issue in her relationship with riley was her lack of communication and at times unwillingness to be vulnerable but when it comes to spike, she doesn’t have that problem. he was the one she turned to when she got the news that her mom was sick and he’s the one there trying to comfort her as she deals with dawn running away. the honesty and communication they have is one of my favorite things about their relationship so I’m glad you pointed that out.
@l.s.d.58632 жыл бұрын
The thing about Buffy and Spike, is that he's a safe zone for, what some would argue, are unhealthy reasons. Buffy is a high-tension person who's constantly checking for what others expect of her. The same was true even before she was the Slayer, which is why it's both said and implied that she was a lot like Cordelia once, only back-then-Buffy (and Cordelia) had a different metric of the expectations on them. It shows even more strongly in season six, which I won't give specific examples for so as not to spoiler it for Sofie and others, but if you've watched the whole show, I think you know what I mean. Spike is safe to be her true self in front of, because she sees his expectations as irrelevant. His opinion of her doesn't count in her mind, not like other people's. Essentially, she can be honest with him only because he's..... ¨beneath her¨. : P Now on the other hand, it's still healthy for her that she has any outlet at all in which she can let down her guard in that way. I'm sure that's why his company is so attractive to her in spite of herself. When she's alone with Spike, she's... well... alone. The only person watching her is herself. That must be a huge relief, even if she doesn't recognize it consciously. And him being an emotionally and socially perceptive person on top of it, means that spending time with him gives her more room than she's ever had to really explore herself. But at the end of the day, she's using him. Extracting worth from someone she sees as worthless. And that's.... messy. For both of them.

The show did drop us a hint about Ben and Glory in Family. Ben goes into a locker room and starts undressing, the camera pans away to a demon slowly stalking through the room, then Glory grabs the demon and says she needs a favour. Ben and Glory are never in the same shot, and you'd think Ben would have reacted in some way to this exchange happening a couple of meters away, even with the later knowledge that he knows about Glory and the supernatural...

On the other hand, I kind of began to go easy on him when I realized that a lot of his broodiness is a result of his curse. I get what you're saying about Spuffy shipping. For me it isn't all about a romantic relationship. I find every scene with Buffy and Spike, especially when they get a lot of dialogue, excellent. Their interactions are just so interesting. Yeah, definitely not healthy by romance or friendship standards go, but they have a great chemistry and are just so damn interesting! I feel like more and more as things go on that Spike, consciously or not, is taking more cues from Buffy. As you said, if she comes in fists flying, he's antagonistic. If she's emotional and vulnerable, he's sympathetic and caring. With the lack of soul for him, I feel like she has become his moral compass.... And wait, what was that you said about Ben and Glory?

I love some of the intricacies of all the characters we get in this season. Giles, Xander and Anya, Willow, Spike, Tara. Even Joyce. Spike's relationship with Summers women is such a fun part of that, and of course with Buffy herself. I don't buy that it's so bad. You said they communicate well, and that is true. For a fictional script full of fantastical creatures, it's hard to get every relationship and accurately, so I think some things are out of character, or awkwardly written sometimes, but over all it's a good ship. Fight me.

While I disagree with Dawn cutting herself, I agree that she had a right to be angry. Spike was right in what he said to Buffy while she was trying to act superior to him during their argument. Dawn should have known before the Scoobies. Willow's look of hurt upon realizing she doesn't know always annoyed me. Especially when the group prove Buffy from _Family_ right in acting weird around Dawn. I am glad Buffy realizes her mistake and acknowledges it to those she wronged aka Spike and Dawn. So many fans use to do the "Shut up Dawn" phrase, but I am on her side in everything but cutting herself and running away, even if understanding why she did those things. The great thing about the _Dawn being in danger_ moments is that it shows just how much Buffy actually cares about her even when knowing the truth. "He is not my boyfriend." Buffy protested that line too quickly for it to have never been a thought in her head.
