Just to highlight how good Angel is at being sadistic: Giles starts out telling Buffy that Angel is trying to provoke her, that she doesn't "have the luxury of being a slave to your passions. I did want to mention that the chase with Jenny always gets overlooked. It really shows the brilliance of Angelus' psychological torture. How he hides it in the small details. When he grabs Jenny and purposely throws her to the door hence giving her an exit. When she's running and he purposely walks. It gets a lot of flak when he runs into the cart but it was deliberate. He does have vampire reflexes and it shows him next scene already upstairs. He gives tiny amounts of hope to escape, erases the hopes, gives some more and the cycle repeats until he finally finishes

Re: Angelus and his soul. This is who Angelus was. This is the monstrous, joyfully cruel, manipulative, sadist he used to be, revelling in every moment of pain and misery he inflicted. He was this for over a century: one of the vilest and most despicable Vampires to ever walk the Earth. Add a soul to that, and you get Angel: a man consumed by his guilt over all the suffering he's inflicted. That's a lot of guilt, because that's *a lot* of suffering. That's why he was cursed - so that he would suffer for all he had inflicted. And Buffy was the only person that helped him forget that guilt.
@jasonfelts5193
@jasonfelts5193 4 жыл бұрын
It always bothered me that fans fans say Angel lost his soul because he had sex with Buffy. Rewatch the episode. The sex happens and is over long enough for the two of them to fall asleep. That's when he loses his soul. That moment of bliss,, dreaming peacefully in the arms of someone that loves him. That was when he didn't feel horrible for the first time in a century

Note how Angel lurked around until he saw the effect of the bad news - that's what he really got his kicks from, not merely knowing he had caused horrible pain upon others, but actually seeing people breaking down. Just going back to his lair to pat himself on the back was not enough.

It's a truly amazing ensemble cast, but Anthony Stewart Head is a cut above the rest. They're all great, but some are better at comedy (eg Nicholas Brendon), some are better than drama (eg SMG), some are better at evil (eg David Boreanaz). But ASH plays every beat to perfection.

Maybe even more heartbreaking than Giles finding Jenny’s body, is when Buffy drags Giles out of the burning building, he yells at her that it’s none of her business, she decks him, then hugs him in tears saying, “I can’t do this without you!” Their relationship has been building so gradually but steadily, and it’s beautiful. I also love the work being done with the weird little “family” of Spike, Dru, and Angel. The dynamics there are fascinating, especially since all three are nominally villains. There are several episodes in this series that can be thought of as turning points, where the quality takes a big jump, or pivotal things happen. I think this is one of them. It may be the episode where “s*it gets real” for the first time. Even “Prophecy Girl” had less weight, because the big thing that happens is resolved very quickly. This episode really sets up that this is not just an amusing teen fantasy show. It’s that too, but it’s also an epic character story.
@ProuvaireJean
@ProuvaireJean 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, that Buffy/Giles moment is one of the most significant markers in their progression from teacher/student to watcher/slayer to friends. In that moment - maybe for the first time - she sees him not just as mentor, but as a fellow human being. Similarly, Giles is stripped of his ability to project himself as an authority figure. He is broken, completely emotionally vulnerable, and surrenders to that vulnerability with her. "Passions", as well as amping up the stakes in the way you describe, is a pivotal episode in Buffy's relationship with both the parental figures in her life - her mom and Giles. It's soooo good.
@juzujuzu4555
@juzujuzu4555 4 жыл бұрын
@@ProuvaireJean Passions is amazing episode. But there's also lots of little things that are not nearly as perfect as the episode Innocence which is just amazing. Though certain aspects of Innocence are more dated, like the rocket launcher thing and the judge. One of the best thing about Passions is the music and sounds, and Angel's speech over. These aspects are used to perfection. But from the point of how many story pieces are moving perfectly and perfectly in sync in Innocence, how that episode changes everything, and how big part of what happens afterwards are actually earned with that episode, I have to say Innocence is the best episode thus far and belong on the perfect TV episodes list for sure. Assuming that we think the episodes from the perspective of 1998, I would challenge anyone to make Innocence any better. The use of rocket launcher was important, as it showed that anything in this show is possible. And Angelus born from the sex between Angel (242yr old vampire) and 16/17yr old Buffy changed the show completely, now it suddenly had another layers that were amazing even from the perspective of adults, but at the same time those things made it even better for the teens as well. Passions is the episode that collects the build up, and it uses music and speech over and the talent of the actors/actresses to maximize the effect. In itself the script isn't nearly as good as Innocence. But that's because Innocence's script is just pure gold.
@ProuvaireJean
@ProuvaireJean 4 жыл бұрын
@@juzujuzu4555 You won't hear me say a bad word about "Innocence" (and "Surprise"), which lit the fuse on the rocket that propelled the entire series upwards. But "Passion" is the first episode that took the proverbial sledgehammer to our face. I think its the more emotionally impactful episode. By the way, it's "Passion", singular. Passions is the one where Timmy gets trapped down the well or something. 😉
@juzujuzu4555
@juzujuzu4555 4 жыл бұрын
@@ProuvaireJean Yes, Passion was the sledgehammer episode, but most of it was earned by the Innocence. We just didn't take the threat seriously enough and this episode is where we really get to see that we should have. It's hard to rate Buffy episodes, as Passion is clearly the most emotionally impactful episode thus far. But if we look at the scripts and think this whole arc as a whole and look how the pieces were moved, I think innocence is the best episode thus far. But again, the use of music and score in Passion and Angel's speech over, and the "poetry" of what he says, that's just amazing. It's impact on emotional level is clearly higher than anything before it.

But I just realized how many reaction videos I've watched, featuring the death of loved characters. Several reactions to this episode for example, and of course, Game of Thrones. Do we actually enjoy watching these fans cry? As Cordelia says: "Great, now I'm going to be stuck with serious thoughts all day!"

I'd been looking forward to this reaction in the same way that people who've read the books were looking forward to the Red Wedding. One of the things that makes this episode a standout is that the consequences of Angelus's actions are not always entirely negative: the "talk" between Buffy and Joyce is one of the best moments of their relationship in the entire series. You need to mix in some genuine love in the episode, and not just as a way to set you up to be knocked down. Willow's mini-arc is another touch: at first she's looking forward to teaching Jenny's class. Then she's disappointed when she's denied the chance. Finally she gets her wish, but at a terrible price. Also, Alyson Hannigan is THE best cryer (crier?) in the business. Her breakdowns always feel 100% authentic and it's absolutely guaranteed that when she cries, I cry. The thing about "Passions" is that Joss Whedon is credited as neither writer nor director, so it blindsides you. But while it contains shocking surprises, it's not a episode that depends on surprise for its impact; it still gets you even when you know what's coming. Inspired by this channel, I rewatched "Passion" for the first time in years. And it took me literally an hour to get myself back in order.

I've been both waiting for and dreading your reaction to this episode, especially given your love for Giles and Jenny. Man, it's heartbreaking. This is my favorite episode of the series thus far and one of my top 10 episodes of the whole show. One thing that this episode did was to show the characters and audience how much of a sadist Angelus really is since we've really only heard about things that he had done in the past. Up until this point, the most we've seen him do is pretty much generic vampire stuff, whereas Angelus was renowned and feared by other vampires for his viciousness. He considered the total destruction of a human being to be an artform. He is truly terrifying.

This episode was done the way that it was, to show that Angel is gone and the monster that murdered Jenny Calendar, that's Angelus. Also, how not just evil Angelus, how much pleasure he takes in causing misery to others, to him creating Pain is like his Art.

The term "floppy disk" made more sense when they were visibly floppy. 8" and 5.25" floppies were actually floppy. Those little 3.5" floppies had a rigid case so the name makes less obvious sense (the disk inside is still floppy). The end of floppy disks has also mostly destroyed the word disk. Disk was short for diskette (a small disc). Compact discs had just arrived with their more traditional spelling, and now people don't even remember that the floppy version was spelt with a 'k'. edit: Yes, I'm old.

My first computer was a Commodore 64 with the 1541 disk drive... 5.25" with a whopping 170,000 byte (170 KB) capacity. Now, right this second, I'm looking at a USB thumb drive with 256,000,000,000 byte (256 GB) capacity that cost less than 3 of the 10 count boxes of floppies I used to buy and it's so small I'm worried I'll loose it in the clutter that is my desk. ( www.amazon.com/SanDisk-256GB-Ultra-Flash-Drive/dp/B07857Y17V/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=sandisk+256gb+ultra+flash+drive&qid=1597991598&sr=8-2 ) I do not miss floppy disks.

This is the first reaction of yours I've seen and I already love you so much oml The amount of times you screamed Giles, and wanting Giles and Jenny to be happy- fucking same. From this point on, the show just gets so much better and better and I'm super stoked to see you get to the rest of Buffy :) -also sad fun fact about this ep, there's a song that plays during the grave site scene called "Remembering Jenny" and if you listen, there are male vocals in the background of that song and it's Anthony Head's voice - the guy who plays Giles - and that added detail just makes me want to SOB. I just found this out a couple weeks ago 😭

The Twilight parallels always bugged me (it's one of the maaaaany reasons I could never get into that series). It definitely feels like Stephanie was a sort of fan of Buffy and Angel who completely missed the entire point of their relationship. Namely, that it is canon abusive, and was framed as such from the beginning. Cause, like, if you remember, stalking Buffy in the Bronze was something he's been doing from season 1. That shot of him here is almost an exact recreation of shots from the beginning of Buffy and his relationship, but then it was interpreted as mysterious and romantic.

This episode...this is the episode I think is the turning point for all Buffy reaction channels. I've been watching you Alley since back in season 1 when I was looking for new videos to watch during quarantine. However, if I find a Buffy reaction channel that's already deep in, I skip to this episode to see how they react to it and gauge whether its worth it to binge their whole series watch-through. You would have had me hooked, can't wait to watch the rest of the series with you.

The reason people love this show so much is because it pulls no punches, because it’s not a show about vampires, it’s a show about the human experience with vampires thrown in as symbols of those experiences. This show has a few moments where the image has just... burned in my mind. Jenny's death is one of those moments. I can still remember the chills I got when watching that for the first time and I'm pretty sure this episode in general is what made this my favorite show instantly. The season itself is already brilliant but this episode is what finally hooked me for good. While Spike is my favorite character overall, Angelus is by far my favorite villain because of how personal and sadistic he is.

In my mind, that is another quintessential trait of Joss Whedon's. He writes death in a way that feels real. Even in a fantasy series like Buffy, when someone dies, he writes it in a way that you FEEL, with all the pain, consequence, and finality of real death.
