Bug Out Bag Checklist (for real people)

My wife and I recently updated our bug out bags. As part of this, we rotated out some food, clothes that don't fit anymore, and more. While we were doing this, I thought I would share a quick look at what I include, what I don't, and how I think about it.

If i may suggest something for your more urban BOB, get your self a dry bag for the clothes. A dry bag will add minimal weight, protect your clothes from water and other physical hazards like mud, smoke, and some punctures through your bob. Also, a dry bag has other advantages like using it as a water carrier/bucket, It can be used for foraging in both urban and wilderness areas alike, and you can use it as a pillow, by filling it with leaves, or even clothes.

This is the first bug out bag video that I have seen that isn't based on some post-apocalyptic walking dead fantasy that is focused on selling tactical knives and multi-tools through affiliate links. If SHTF I am sure everyone would trade their elaborate bug out purchases for a good pair of running shoes, a warm jacket, and 3 days of solid food! Love that you don't have 100 feet of paracord and a million knives... in an urban setting a bit of string is not going to be difficult commodity to come by and if you realistically are one of the few who could be bugging out to the bush you should have a tent and sleeping bag. Great job!!!

The "real BOB" is the one that gets you safely to your new location. Bugging out is not a camping trip, it is not a live in the woods forever, the purpose of a bug out is to move from an area of danger to an area not in danger, until the danger has passed. Town flooding? Hop in your car before everyone else and drive to a town above the flood, bug out success.

Exactly, I was involved in USAR for a number of years, my “bug out bag” is based around having to evacuate for a period of time to a shelter or similar, my home civil defence kit is assessable and to provide the essentials for 72 hours, not the zombie apocalypse.

Yes it's raining hard then the levee breaks or some of the reason that it starts flooding the areas you already knew that because it just started raining it didn't say it was a tarantial rain you already knew because you are the one that knows everything

Your 80% ahead of most and thats great, but bugging out is also not only going across town or even a couple hours away sometimes. If its bad enough that you have to leave home you have to think about things that can happen that might keep you from ever coming back also. I know not every emergency can't be covered in a bug out bag and some differently over do it . But what you have is the absolutely bare minimum . Get some cordage , bigger first aid, and think about what if you cant get to where your going with the car or it doesn't make it all the way. What if you get to where your going and there's nothing there ? Just some thoughts, not trying to be negative.

I would certainly add at least two heavy-duty trash bags to each of the backpacks and at least one Sawyer Water Filter so you can filter a lot of water at once until everybody's canteens are filled

Great kit but i would recommend putting copies of personal documents and family photos on all backpacks with names and birth dates written on the back of the photos

This is all great advice, and I thank you. I'm currently in a situation where my mom lives with me, age 87. As well as my 70-year-old husband, who has a variety of health problems, including diabetes and a pacemaker. I'm no spring chicken either. We need to prepare a go bag for us, but I don't hear anything about what older people need if they have to leave quickly or are stranded away from home. An accident with a train just happened two days ago, just a couple of blocks away. I heard the train hit the car. Immediately there was a fireball, and the car and the front of the train were engulfed. It was an Amtrack train, but I shudder to think of what would have happened to us and our neighbors had the train been carrying nasty chemicals. I feel so bad for that person, but he tried to beat the train. Folks, please don't do this.

I worry about the older people or people with health issues in my family. I'd stay away from the wheeled carry-on luggage because they aren't that sturdy. I saw on the news a lot of Ukrainian women crossing the Polish border pulling wheeled luggage behind them. That must've been rough. One of my luggage wheels came off when I was returning home from Mexico. I ended up partially dragging my bag through the airport. Quite embarrassing. We got an elderly family member to upgrade to a deer cart because it has a stronger frame, sturdy tires, can carry over 300 lbs & it can more or less handle coarse terrain. She was willing & able to pull it but we would pitch in every now & then to help. With a little modification we were also able to transform it into a mobile litter. That could come in handy.

cordage is a no brainer. fishing,hanging,sewing,tying,drying,carrying fire wood and misc,traping etc. i probably forget many more!

Yes I have to bug out I live in Colorado it'll take me at least maybe 7 8 hours maybe more to get to where I'm going it's 4:00 at night it's going to be dark way before I get there I'm going to have to spend the night somewhere

Very nice and simple bag!! its great that you actually don't just copy and paste and stay true to what your are confident using. If you don't mind i'd would suggest adding a Grayl for water purification as it kills virus and its very easy also fast to use and a small PET bottle because your cheap bottle can't be accidently dropped especially in cold weather. Lifestraw is small and good to keep in your first aid kit(but for cooking you would need to spit out the water). For food, personaly i keep instant noodles stock packets, its awesome for electrolytes! Electrolytes packets works too but you can't really use them for cooking. I think i saw an emergency blanket in your kit but you definately want 1 or more! I used those for insulating our sleeping area in a badly insulated cabin in -40degrees C! I used 4 of them and repacked them after use. For the gloves i would recomend a pair that can withstand heat, leather is usually pretty good at it. The knife is pretty nice despite its short blade since you have no axe but the main thing i would recomend is adding a safety so it does not fall off the sheat accidently if its on your belt. A multitool is packed with value! a sewing kit and a small amount of paracord 550 might save your untested pack(i bought a pack for 60$ went out with it once and ALL zipper broke. With a large needle you can use the inner part of paracord and use it as a solid fix. For me i never go out without my hatchet, but its the MOST dangerous tool especially small axes, because its very easy to lose the fear of the tool. If you add an axe make sure you watch a couple videos on axe safety! The most important would be emergency blankets and electrolytes. With no fire and no electricity, hypothermia can happens in 4 minutes. chicken/beef/vegetable stock brew + emergency shelter has tremendous life saving value. don't go for low salt because salt = electrolytes. water without electrolytes will not hydrate you by itself. if you have any questions feel free to reply to this comment and i'll do my best to explain more in dept my suggestions. This is more of an urban bag than anything else. It is good, I can think of cases when you have to evacuate an area due to hurricanes, tornadoes, flash floods, etc. You are limited to what you can take per person to a place of shelters like a community center, gym, or motel. This is similar to something I already have. The big difference though is that I brake mine up into modules of utility bags, pouches, and zip lock bags.

Interested if you would be willing to test this kit out, spend a night at a campsite for instance? It's something most preppers would never do, preferring the fantasy of how their BOB would work over the reality Could make a very interesting video! One suggestion (this is just me), if you carry a knife then have some way to treat an accidental knife wound to the hand or leg. Gauss for packing a wound is very cheap, and a good sized wound dressing could save a lot of blood loss

Great kit!!! If I had your kit I would add a microfiber towel, underclothes, bathing suit/swim trunks, USB batteries, solar power bank/charger w/all the charging cords attached, a flashlight, an external hard drive, a multitool, a rain suit/poncho, safety goggles, a magnifying glass/fresnel lense (firestarting and to look at wounds better, and tweezers.You gotta prepare for your environment & the circumstances you are likely to face. I live near 2 small town, but have wilderness around me so I prepare for both urban and wilderness. I added a pocket saw, hatchet to my kit, a bandana, a shemagh, a tick removal too, snake bite kit, a small compact magnifying lighted mirror, a rechargeable glow stick to my kit, as well as regular glow sticks, rechargeable/non rechargeable body/hand warmers, and some things like waterproof cards, a portable mini movie projector, and some portable travel games. Each member has a different travel game for variety.

Your lifestraw is shit .it won't remove chemicals .. I do like your minimalist approach, and it will work if you combine it with an extensive edc kit and a good skill set . I fully understand the lack of 550 paracord ,but...a roll of no.36 bankline NEEDS TO Be INCLUDED ..... NUMEROUS USES .. seriously. You're obviously not stupid PUT THE BANKLINE IN .. Great realistic video!!! I always wondered about those Rangers running around with dirty underwear and no wipes to clean up! You really should add some 550cord. You can hang wet clothes, make a tourniquet, fix your backpack strap, you get the idea! Zip ties won’t fix a muffler, but you got ear plugs so you don’t have to lol! No kidding my buddies exhaust broke on his quad and we both searched our bags,….no ear plugs! Both of us ended up with headaches!!!!

This is a great video. You're certainly right about clothing being missed from most videos about bug out bags, etc. I would, (and do), prioritise a good first aid kit, even over clothes. That being said mine do contain a full set of clothes. Again great video! Thanks for sharing.

First, thanks. Very nice presentation. Second, you have to do you! There is no standard for what you must have in your go-bag. Whatever works for your situation and needs. Yes, you are right.....your bag is what a typical "Non-combatant" civilian would carry out on a one or two day family camping trip. But what you have put together would absolutely not suit my needs. My packs are configured for a the needs of a combatant. Urban, and wilderness fighting situations. They are also designed for an indefinite period of survival. You never know if and when things will return to "Normal."

Rule of bug out bags pack for your environment and weather . Also have as much gear as you can or skills are lighter but you can always drop stuff to if its to heavy when you have to walk. Best example is a silcock key for city water spigots.

I've just been going through stuff yesterday. I have like a 10 year old crank light/radio/charger.covered with dust in my car. Cleaned it up. And works fantastic. Stuff doesn't have to be new. It just needs to work. I'm checking cargo straps for function & quick access. Thinking about putting up my cargo carrier. Just to see parts & pieces still solid. And my bike carrier.

Granted, you probably don't need 100 ft of paracord. But break a shoelace and you'll wish you hade something other than zip ties. Perhaps 25 FT of #36 bank line. Takes up a lot less room than paracord and can help in a pinch!

All items should be kitted into categories and those kits can be contained within ziploc bags to lessen the impacts of high humidity and also allow your bag to sink slower if it goes in the water.

Great video. Every other big out vid seems to have someone going through their bag like it's the first time they have actually seen the items! Also they place the 200 fire starting items in the same pouch...so they can easily lose the lot and freeze to death.

Nicely done. I would recommend adding a coffee pot or cooking pot to boil larger quantities of water at one time, also some extra containers for storing fresh water. Having at least 4 liters of water you could grab and go would get you a head start while you try to find water suitable for consumption (filtered and purified). Having a game or two to play with your kids will help pass time and give them a sense of calm.

If you think that emergency bivy won't snag or rip, your going to have a crappy time when you bug out. The life straw is one of the worst water filters out there. Look for a sawyer mini or a Hydro blu Versa flow.

Not a bad kit. Just a couple of points to consider. Maybe replace the jeans as denim when wet takes ages to dry so your stuffer more. Boots would be better than sneakers but needs must and they are much better than sandals. The poncho you have is useless. Next time it rains try it out! There are much better on the market and for a few bucks more you have a reusable waterproof item. I'd consider a few feet of paracord for the cost and weight you won't regret it. Yes you could use zip ties as laces but they have to be cut each time you want to undo the sneakers. You will surprised how often you use it when you have it.

I have a poncho from an army surplus store, it's a bit heavy - but in a pinch can be used as an emergency shelter. On me it comes down almost to my ankles as i'm quite short

I think that the "2gosystems trifecta" is a much better bag than the sol. Would make tarp totally unnecessary. I own and have used both the trifecta and the sol. In fact, two trifectas can be zipped together to essentially make a four-person thermal sleeping bag. The shared body heat alone would probably keep a family of four warm down to 20 degrees. Made of the same material as the sol, but much better quality.

Over all not a bad start. I like the standardization. I'm a Eagle Scout. Dump the cotton jeans (cotton will kill you, wool is best) You have no communications (get some Baofeng UV-5R radios the are about 22 buck each at Amazon) You have no maps/compass and a really cheap pair of binos (Walmart 10 bucks) (how do you know where you are at and where you are going.) Add 2x wool socks. If you are in a city, add a silcock key, a small pry bar and Linemans pliers to get through chain link fences. Add at least 2 LT of water. 2 things you might consider (cheap swimmer goggles and a M95 mask.) to protect your eye and lungs. And speaking of protection If you don't own a firearm get Bear spray and a small kids baseball bat. Hope this helped.

I don't have a bugout bag. I have a bugout suit case. Why am I going to carry when I can roll? 99.9% of all bugout scenarios include roads. If you want a bag so bad, put the bag in the suitcase. How much can you put in a backpack? How much can you put in a suitcase? These seem like simple things to me. One is tacticool the other tactismart

I was thinking about getting a large rolling duffel bag. Lighter than a suitcase and as you said, I could put a small to medium size backpack inside or possibly two. One for my husband and one for myself. In most cases, we wouldn't be bugging out into the wilderness but to a motel or shelter and would have our vehicle. The backpacks would be a last resort if we truly did have to go on foot on rougher terrain where the wheeled bag wouldn't work well.

In an emergency situation you really want to wake up if something happens. You need to be aware of your surroundings. Ear plugs are not a great idea.

I'd include a boom boom stick and accompanying boom boom holders and boom boom makers if you catch my drift. And a blindingly bright flashlight. Mace. A tazer. You're more likely to need those in many circumstances than fire making and shelter unfortunately. Hopefully that's part of your EDC (every day carry). A good rain poncho and pair of binoculars or monocular could also be very helpful. A whistle too. Water protection / a dry bag for your electronics. Bank line. Scissors (an extra sturdy pair). Quick clot product. Sunglasses. Something you can put under your tires (and a suitable bag) to give you traction if you got stuck in the mud (obviously for being stored in your car, not your bag). I personally carry a lot more health / medical items, like herbal eye drops and sinus inflammation / congestion sprays. Electrolyte powders / salt. Pen and paper / notebook. Nails. A portable fan. A compass and map of the area. Etc.

Some of the people in the comments obviously didn't listen to the video. For most people, they will be bugging out to a family member's house, a motel, etc. Not staying out in the woods. This is a pre - packed over night bag to get where you are going quickly.

have 35+ years in the outdoors hiking camping etc . i carry 1-3 meals i dont have to cook like packets of tuna or chicken . hygiene/first aid i've added tweezer Q tips foot powder . vaseline multi use chap lips burns fire starter etc . get some cordage 3-5 tent stakes for shelter folding saw extra water bottle compass topo maps . i carry small fishing kit snares other way to get small game in case its more than 72 hrs have other plans in case you cant make it to someones house or if you got to walk

A work colleague of mine used super glue to seal a circular saw cut once, he ended up with blood issues, had to have hospital treatment/course of tablets. The surgeon said that the super glue that they use is specifically for human tissue, it's medical grade and not the same as what's available to us. Be very careful, you could do more harm than good.

I would imagine if you didn't clean a wound out properly and then sealed it up that could develop into an unwelcome situation as well. Kind of like when they closed up wounds during the Civil War or post-surgery.

Shocking... unless you're bugging out in Candyland. Lots of comfort, very little survival. I do get it, you're packing to overnight at a relative's or hotel, but the little gear you have is heavy, not very useful without the gear you left out. A tarp, but no cordage? A plastic water bottle? No trauma gear at all... bandaids are nice, but no tourniquet, packing gauze, wound dressings? The adults at least should have more heavy use gear. Better blade, multitool, trauma kit, yes a flashlight, better stainless steel, single wall bottle, cordage, etc... One very important thing that wasn't mentioned, firearm.

There is like a .1% chance of you needing any of that. 99.9% of actual bugging out will be from flooding, storms, fire, tornados, hurricanes, etc. Doomsday has never occurred in all of recorded history.

I admire the video a lot. There are way too many fantasy bugout bags. The most probable scenarios are tornado, flooding, fire, civil unrest, etc. The one thing I would say that is important is rope. Statistically, deaths in the wilderness or during natural disasters usually occur from drowning and falling. Imagine having to climb one house to the next because the ground is flooded. A thick rope would really help especially if you are with others.

How are you going to use your tarp if you don't have cordage? Do you have enough Duck Tape and zip ties? One pack of paracord would not weigh much or take up much room.

Great video! However, is this a bug out bag or a get home bag? You mention you’re going to put this bag inside your car. A bug out bag is a bag your bugging out with more essentials items and your leaving your home for any reason. A get home back is the similar essentials but essentials that can survive so you can go home such items you mention in this video.

5:45 ...You can get more for your buck, if you bought a big roll of paper towel, and cut them in three's ...and carried a bar of soap with water....you got your own DIY Wet Bum tickets. ($1.20 usd )One roll of paper towel , cut in three parts = 83 sheets x 3 = 249 bum tickets. In a SHTF no one is gonna care about ecofriendly products (papertowel) ...when the people survived the wild fires, and were set up in tent cities, within parking lots....the place was littered to the max with all kinds of garbage and stuff. The outhouses were overloaded with shit and piss...and people were pooping in the bushes of businesses. I'd loose the Liquid body wash , and trade it in for a soap/shampoo bar . It will last longer. 6:22 ...better be very careful...to take the proper dosage to your sickness and body size... *Fatal Diarrhea* cases in children are well documented with misdosing anitbiotics. Diarrhea causes a prepper to lose even more fluids, salts (sodium), minerals , that are essential to keep the body hydrated. Dehydration is a serious condition in SHTF, especially for children and elderly people. 8:46 ...its a heavy knife...but very functional.. I like a knife that is easy to maintain an edge, strike a ferro rod The Mora Knife is only 15$ cad 9:42 ... That Fire kit is good....its got the basics.. The Stormproof matches are great. Cotton pads are the same as easy start tabs. Mini Bic Lighters are great. can never go wrong with a Ferro rod...can spark that off a kitchen knife, piece of glass, or any kind of stone. 10:57 ... Cordage is a must for out of townie preppers, bush preppers ....I like Mason line, or bankline...but like you said...for an urban BOB , it isn't really necessary... Paracord is great for its 7 inner cord strength....and for tying up bundles...like your wool blanket , and a canadian jam knot.. 12:24 ...outstanding family BOBs you got set up...🤩👍🌟🌟🌟🌟

Second viewing. I disagree on the knife. If there is a knife you love to use, then you know everything that it can do as well as what you can do with it. THAT is the knife to carry. That is the knife you buy a brand new one and put that in your BOB. If you own several knives, then you can certainly afford to have a double of your fav knife in your bag. I also keep a consumable box at home, it has extra of not only food items, but also things like salt tabs, toothpaste etc. You actually take the BOB on an over nighter and try some things without having to keep everything mint and unused. Keep the good stuff, toss out the chaff.

IMHO, I'll bet you haven't actually tried a realistic trial run with this gear. You didn't mention any EDC gear so I assume that other than wallet and keys that you're not carrying. You have a little stove but what are you going to use with it! If you going to use wood, then you should add at least a folding saw. You don't have enough water-carrying capacity, I only saw a small metal cup (I'm guessing 12 ounces, which if your water filter breaks or gets lost (shit happens) then you'll need to boil most water sources and you would have to boil that cup full of water 8 times just to get your minimum of three quarts daily! And that's not considering water for your children. Plus, that water filter while good doesn't allow you to take the water source with you! Your food seems okay, the only thing I would definitely add is a salt and pepper shaker, FD meals are bland at best. I don't think that you mentioned how long you expected to survive on this kit! If you're assuming that you'll be driving to safety, then what if you have a breakdown, or traffic logjams. I would suggest that you keep a dedicated vehicle bag so if you're not at home and your bag is you won't have to first go get it! The vehicle can carry a lot more supplies than you'll hopefully need (especially water), but isn't it better to have and not need than need and not have? Those cheap ponchos are crap, get the real deal. This seems to me to be a lot of 'comfort items like toothbrush, etc., your tooth won't rot out in three days and you can use your finger and a little water to clean your teeth (for a short time), and paper towels are much more versatile. Invest in a good knife or better two, one for the backpack and one for the waist belt, you don't want to be without a knife! I don't see any food resupply items like for hunting and fishing. If the bug out reason is minor you'll probably be alright, but if the SHTF, then I hope you're not going to depend on the kindness of strangers or worse the government! That lighter in the net bag will most likely be run out of fuel just from being moved around, a little tape around it will keep it usable. I would suggest that you add a regular flashlight as a backup and some candles, the best IMHO is the ones that come in their own tin so they don't make a mess; tape them shut! Lastly, what about self-defense, maybe you can't carry a firearm but maybe you can carry bear spray, a loud whistle, or at least a sturdy walking stick/staff for both you and your lady and very important get some real training on how to use them!
