I know this is a older video, but the most impressive part was at the very end when she got the Roe Deer to respond to her call, it shows she is the real deal. Most non-hunters would not know that trick and you can even use a blade of grass the same way. I think somewhere it was mentioned her father is a hunter and Dax was her father's hunting dog. I am guessing Lilly knows a lot more than she lets on.

I've used tarps in these types of shelters before. For the maximum use of your tarp place the edge on the bottom of the shelter where you want it. This lower edge just off the ground keeps water and mold from collecting. Then take the tarp up and over your support slats. With a rope tied tight between the two support trees and just under the slats bring the tarp under the rope then back over the slats. This gives you double thickness and an eaves for rain. To protect the tarp from the rough ends of the slats you can cover them with sock or the cut off ends on water bottles.

Yup. I noticed that as well. When water runs down, it will collect and gather up in that excess tarp, no matter how well you cover that side. It has no way going out of the tarp at the bottom.
@01Eldar7 жыл бұрын
I was wondering about that. Thx
@brenthadley16957 жыл бұрын
Also at the top... should have had the tarp over the top log and secured underneath on the inside of the log (top support log)
@beyondvger36823 жыл бұрын
The water will drain away from her floor the way she has the tarp folded. If you folded it under, the water would run down the side of the tarp and go right in. And I think she didn't hang it over the front because that would keep smoke in from the fire inside the bug out shelter.

I have a feeling she is hiding something from us. I think someone did vandalize it. Her explanation about her cousin felling tree doesn't make sense. there is no evidence of a cut tree, not even a tree stump. The damage itself doesn't look like a tree fell on it. I think it was vandalized and I think she is hiding the identity of the perpetrator for personal reasons.

I'de be very interested to see some form of water collection integrated into the shelter from the tarp portion of the shelter. Thanks for all your helpful videos.

Survival Lilly, you kick ass!!! A couple of suggestions. The short logs you sit on. Maybe split them for a flatter surface to lie on. And then you would need less short logs too! The tarp should be set up for rain catchment. And put that dog to work! He can drag logs or catch rabbits! :) Love your videos!!!

Hi Lilly. Glad to see you turn a negative (the shelter being damaged) into a positive. I think this rebuild is better than the one before.
@educatingjohnson3729 жыл бұрын
If I may make a suggestion. From a construction point of view, I would reset your tarp so the excess is at the top of your lean-to. As you have it, water will collect at the base in the rolled up portions of the tarp, creating an ideal environment for mold and bugs to flourish. With the excess portion of your tarp at the top, you can pull it down over the front when not at camp, and furl it up like a sail when in use. Also it would make an additional wind break for rough, windy winters.

That looks even more sturdy now, great job. Thanks for sharing.

hey Lily, must say, you sure have lots of strength, courage and persevearance! I think there are many men who could not come up with what you do. I respect that. If you role the trap on the bottom, then at least role itthe other way around so no water can get trapped in it. Maybe role it around a pole with the pol on the inside of the shelter. If I may ask, what purpose do these walls have, the way you set them up? Is it soem sort of protection or just to create a homey-space? Keep it up!

Survival Lilly Lilly, I've tried to build a camp, something similar to yours, but I've been warned to stop because I was damaging a protected tree. Do you know what trees are protected and how to identify them? Much appreciated, A long-term subscriber.

#TreeLivesMatter ........LOL
@leesmith78838 жыл бұрын
check with your local woodland or forestry authority, they will let you know what is and is not protected, however i have found the best practice is to build a free standing camp, if you build a free standing camp rather than using a living tree to support your structure then nobody can complain about such things. once you have masters the kind of construction you see in these videos, i would start thinking about different kinds of structures, what Lilly has built is ok for what it is, but you need to think about all round protection from the elements if the camp you are building is going to be long term. a lean too is ok for a day or two in winter or through out summer, but if you are going to be dealing with a bad winter then you need to think about apex roofs or better still a yurt design, something that is going to give you an all around protection from the elements. i know you will already know what i have posted here, but there are those that would not think of that and so i posted it for them to think on.

@Tijnas6178 жыл бұрын
That cross-beam is leaning on two small branches pounded into the ground. Wouldn't it make sense if the lean-to actually leaned on the trees instead of just being tied to it? Wouldn't that make it stronger?
@ghanaboyz8 жыл бұрын
Probably, but what she did worked out regardless.
@Tijnas6178 жыл бұрын
ghanaboyz Well, I'm saying the exact opposite haha. I'm saying it didn't work because a falling tree completely destroyed the lean to. But if the supporting beam in the thumbnail, was on the other side of the tree trunks, the structure would have only broken if that tree had literally snapped in two.
@ghanaboyz8 жыл бұрын
I see your point, but it is still some speculation and a number of IFs in my opinion. Speculation not without foundation, but still speculation. Do we know how heavy that fallen tree was and if another shelter construction actually would have mattered due to the force and weight? Sorry, I can not tell. What shelter is bullet proof so to speak? There can always be a bigger tree falling on you. Me, I haven't build a better shelter than she has. I have no idea how she reasoned while building all of it, but each to his/hers own. It is very easy to find - or believe you find.- faults when watching others. Perhaps she did what she did for some reason, who knows? Sometimes there is a difference on theory and practice. Perhaps she felt she simply could not hold up that supporting rather heavy beam on the other side? If she felt that, it was perhaps very natural to put it on the other side instead?
@Tijnas6178 жыл бұрын
ghanaboyz I get your point. She's made a shelter and I haven't made a better shelter. But I'm not trying to be mean or overly critical here. Viewers are still capable of making constructive criticism of a design in theory. Even if the tree in this instance was too big for my proposed design, it doesn't take away from the fact that the cross beam in a lean-to is supposed to be on the same side of the tree as the roof. That's because the roof is supposed to "lean" on the tree. Her design defeats the purpose of using the trees strength to lean on. Just a bit. It's a fine shelter for everything except for a tree falling on it lol. These are two example pictures: Diagram: imgur.com/a/cttah Photograph: imgur.com/a/PDBHT Both of these are physically capable of withstanding more force applied from above. I'm not saying her terrible is bad at all, don't get me wrong. I'm just making a suggestion for an improvement :) Hope you're well

My only comment about your re-build (I know this is an old video...) It might be better to fold the tarp into the shelter (as a partial floor), rather than bunching it up on the outside. It could trap water and breed mosquitos. Plus, a little bit of plastic to put some gear on is handy.

Chris Dorris You can do the same thing with a large blade of grass. (3-4 inches long by about half an inch wide - sorry, if you use metric I don't know the conversion sizes) If you put your thumbs together side by side you should see a small hole between the 1st and 2nd knuckles, pinch the blade between your thumbs making sure to keep the blade as rigid and straight as possible, then blow into the hole. May take a few tries to get it to work right.
